Love this thread...

Never know how much I love you... Never know how much I care... When you put your arms around me... I get a fever that's so hard to bear, you give me fever.. When you kiss me... fever if you live and learn... fever... til you sizzle... what a lovely way to burn

Tri-Pirate - 2005-08-12 10:27 AM It's late in the evening She's wondering what clothes to wear She puts on her make up And brushes her long blonde hair And then she asks me Do I look alright And I say yes, you look wonderful tonight We go to a party And everyone turns to see This beautiful lady That's walking around with me And then she asks me Do you feel alright And I say yes, I feel wonderful tonight I feel wonderful Because I see the love light in your eyes And the wonder of it all Is that you just don't realize How much I love you Eric Clapton, Wonderful Tonight

That is one of my favorite songs. Am I the only one who recently learned this was about him being pissed off at some chick for taking too long to get ready to go out??!

Hilarious.

Incubus, while not my fave band, has some interesting thought proviking lyrics.:

Will I ever get to where I'm going?
Will I ever follow through with what I had planned
I guess it's possible that I have been a bit distracted
And the directions for me are a lot less in demand

Will I ever get to where I'm going?
If I do, will I know when I am there? If the wind blew me in the right direction
Would I even care?
I would

If I hadn't made me
I would've been made somehow
If I hadn't assembled myself
I'dve fallen apart by now
If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow

If you let them fuck you
There will be no foreplay
But rest assured
They'll screw you complete
Til' your ass is blue and grey

You should make amends with you
If only for better health
But if you really want to live
Why not try and Make Yourself?

I like the one in Stellar where he compares being inside his SO to being in outer space... weird, yet touching.

I've always loved the imagery of this one:
"Can not find the candle of thought to light your name."

And not leave out Rush:

The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will.
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill.

They say there are strangers who threaten us,
Our immigrants and infidels.
They say there is strangeness to danger us
In our theatres and bookstore shelves,
That those who know what’s best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves.

Quick to judge,
Quick to anger,
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand.

By the way, "You Don't Call Me Darling" was NOT written by David Allen Coe. In fact, he mentions that right before he sings that last verse. It was written by Steve Goodman.

Max, I have to own up to not actually ever hearing anything by Bruce Cockburn except as covered by other people. He's next on my list to purchase now, sounds like my kind of music.

Here's one that I've always liked:
Don’t you know we got smart bombs, it’s a good thing that our bombs are clever.
Don’t you know that the smart bombs are so clever, they only kill bad people.

Don’t you know though our kids are dumb, we got smart bombs, what a joyous thing.
Here we go so let’s drink a toast, to those clever bombs, and the men who built them.

(chorus)
There they go now, there go all my friends
There they go now, marching off to war again
With their bright flags waving in the wind
There they go now, marching off to war again
Smiling proudly, with their heads in the clouds.

Don’t you know this is better than any video friend. it’s an action movie.
Here we go watch the bad guys get their butts kicked. really makes me feel
Good. here we go watching cnn, the adrenaline rushes through my veins.
Don’t you know it’s a feel good show, electronic bliss. it’s a video, video...

(chorus)

Aren’t you glad we got smart bombs, it’s a damn good thing our bombs are clever
It’s a shame that our kids are dumb, but our bombs are smart, what a lucky thing now
Don’t you know it’s a feel good show and it’s suitable for the whole darn family
Come on out everybody shout, give a big salute to our ingenuity
Don’t you know this is better than, any video friend, it’s an action movie...
Here we go, watch the bad guys get their butts kicked, and it makes me feel good.
Don’t you know it’s nintendo, really gets the blood flowing thru my veins now
Don’t you know it’s a feel-good show, electronic bliss, it’s a video, video

(War Again / Boingo )

And here's something from Tom Waits that may offend some of you...but it's Tom Waits! He's the best!!
When the weather gets rough
And it's whiskey in the shade
It's best to wrap your savior
Up in cellophane
He flows like the big muddy
But that's ok
Pour him over ice cream
For a nice parfait

Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me

(Choclate Jesus / Tom Waits / Mule Variations)

And of course the one that's been stuck in my head since Friday night, some of the best music ever written:
It's astounding, time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll
But listen closely, not for very much longer
I've got to keep control

I remember doing the TIme Warp
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me and the void would be calling
Let's do the time warp again...
Let's do the time warp again!

Didn't say written said original...He was the first to sing it....Half of the songs posted weren't written by the artists just performed by them.

Now yours reminds me of another one:

she moved so easily all i could think of was sunlight
i said, 'aren't you the woman who was recently granted a Fulbright?'
she said, 'don't i know you from the cinematographer's party?'
and i said, 'who am i, to blow against the wind?'

Yeah. I'm kinda fond of his stuff too.

"good morning, said the sun to the buildings
you look like youve been up all night, waiting for my answers
there's no more room in heaven, so when you tumble down
your bricks will lay foudations, for structures, roads, and towns"

Good Morning by lullaby for the working man

"i am walking
out in the rain
and i am listening to the low moan
of the dial tone again
and i am getting
nowhere with you
and i can't let it go
and i can't get through...
the old woman behind the pink curtains
and the closed door
on the first floor
she's listening through the air shaft
to see how long our swan song can last
and both hands
now use both hands
oh, no don't close your eyes
i am writing
graffiti on your body
i am drawing the story of
how hard we tried
i am watching your chest rise and fall
like the tides of my life,
and the rest of it all
and your bones have been my bedframe
and your flesh has been my pillow
i am waiting for sleep
to offer up the deed
with both hands
in each other's shadows we grew less and less tall
and eventually our theories couldn't explain it all
and i'm recording our history now on the bedroom wall
and when we leave the landlord will come
and paint over it all
and i am walking
out in the rain
and i am listening to the low moan of the dial tone again
and i am getting nowhere with you
and i can't let it go
and i can't get through
so now use both hands
please use both hands
oh, no don't close your eyes
i am writing graffiti on your body
i am drawing the story of how hard we tried
hard we tried
how hard we tried"

Pushit I will choke until I swallow... Choke this infant here before me. What is this but my reflection? Who am I to judge and strike you down? But you're pushing and shoving me. You still love me and you pushit on me. Rest your trigger on my finger, bang my head upon the fault line. Take care not to make me enter. 'cause if I do we both may disappear. But you're pushing me, shoving me. Pushit on me. Slipping back into the gap again. I'm alive when you're touching me, alive when you're shoving me down. But i'd trade it all for just a little bit of piece of mind. Put me somewhere I don't wanna be. Seeing someplace I don't wanna see. Never wanna see that place again. Saw that gap again today as you were begging me to stay. Managed to push myself away, and you, as well. If, when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay, you minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way. There's no love in fear. Staring down the hole again. Hands upon my back again. Survival is my only friend. Terrified of what may come. Just remember I will always love you, even as I tear your f*ing throat away. But it will end no other way.

I think rap songs have some very funny lines -

"no chrome on the wheels, I'm a grown up for real" - jay-z

"what good is all the fame, if you ain't f**ing the models" - nelly

"if this is communication, I disconnect" - The Cardigans (not rap, but a good line in a good song)

If you don't know about Liz Phair, she writes a lot about relationships gone bad. Oh...and also about sex. She writes a lot about sex.:

So Johnny, my love, we got us a witness
Now all we gotta do is get a preacher
He can probably skip the "until death" part
'Cause Johnny, my love, you're already dead -- "Dance of the Seven Veils" from Exile in Guyville

You walk in clouds of glitter and the sun reflects your eyes
And everytime the wind blows, I can smell you in the sky
Your kisses are as wicked as an F-16
And you f*&k like a volcano, and you're everything to me -- "Supernova" from Whipsmart

I met him at a party and he told me how to drive him home
He said he liked to do it backwards
I said, "That's just fine with me,
That way we can f*%k and watch TV." --"Chopsticks" from Whipsmart

I was talking, not two days ago
To a certain bartender I'm lucky to know
And I asked Henry, my bartending friend
If I should bother dating unfamous men

And Henry said,
"You're lucky to even know me,
You're lucky to be alive.
You're lucky to be drinking here for free,
'cause I'm a sucker for your lucky, pretty eyes." --"Polyester Bride" from Whitechocolatespaceegg

Come sail your ships around me

And burn your bridges down

We make a little history, baby

Everytime you come around.

Come loose your dogs upon me

And let your hair hang down

You are a little mystery to me

Everytime you come around.

- Nick Cave

Or, if you're in the mood for a Nick Cave murder ballad...

Get down, get down, little Henry Lee
And stay all night with me
You won't find a girl in this damn world
That will compare with me
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

I can't get down and I won't get down
And stay all night with thee
For the girl I have in that merry green land
I love fair better than thee
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

She leaned herself against a fence
Just for a kiss or two
And with a little pen-knife held in her hand
She plugged him through and through
And the wind did roar and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Come take him by his lilly-white hands
Come take him by his feet
And throw him in this deep deep well
Which is more than one hundred feet
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Lie there, lie there, little Henry Lee
Till the flesh drops from your bones
For the girl you have in that merry green land
Can wait forever for you to come home
And the wind did howl and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

there is no better sex song than:
Wild Berry Pie, by David Wilcox (w/ Mary Chapin Carpenter's harmonious moan on the chorus...)

When you pick a sprig of balsam pine,
On your hike along the mountain view,
You can wrap the scent in corduroy,
And bring the mountain home with you.
When you sit beside the ocean's edge
And dream of what might come to be,
Your fingers keep the taste of salt,
From the castles made beside the sea.

I'm lonely at work now,
My hand holds my chin.
And my mischievous fingers remind me,
And cover my grin.
The scent takes me dreaming,
To wildberry pie,
And the wind hits my sails
With the sound of your trembling sigh.

When we work to make a berry pie,
lips can tell where we have been,
Out picking huckleberries wild,
to bring the harvest home again.
And on the way we sang a tune,
what I said is what I meant,
Our love is like a red, red rose--
it leaves a certain subtle scent.

I'm lonely at work now.
My hand holds my chin,
And my mischievous fingers remind me and cover my grin
The scent takes me dreaming,
of wildberry pie,
And the wind hits my sails with the sound of your trembling sigh.
And the wind hits my sails with the sound of your trembling sigh.

then there are love songs...
I Love, I Love
Dar Williams makes me cry every time I hear it....

I heard love can fall so hard, it can bury a kingdom
I heard it makes the spring appear out of season
It's a storm in a shadowbox, a force to be reckoned with,
When it finds you and find you, it will.

And I'd not believed it til I loved, I love
The rivers sing and stars awaken above me
And the wind and the moon in fits of restless conspiring
Turn night to heaven for you.

But I am going to a far, far land
I know it sure as I've a past and a future
With my maps on the table, you see, I have lost many things
So many I won't turn back.

And were I a deadwood ship, my heart a compass
I would leave with inanimate grace, no love could touch me
But I live and I know that I'll burn as I grow
Though it might break my heart to walk away and so

As a moon may adore you and remain, high moon
The wind may crown your head with leaves, and keep blowing
So I'll stop and I'll watch you, for I love, I love
And then be on my way. And then be on my way.

so besides sex and love, my other favorite topic is food:

Eggs are Good
Robbie Fulks

There's a small, round food I have oft enjoyed
With a shell of white and a shape ovoid
It's eggs
Wonderful eggs

Oh the farmer rises every morn at nine
For his hens bear a gift for all mankind
It's eggs
Farm-fresh eggs

There are golden eggs from a golden goose
There are eggs that are green in the books of Seuss
Green eggs
Fairytale eggs

I have eaten spinach, I have eaten kelp
But the warm golfballs that the white hens whelp
Put a spring in my step, bring delight to me
When I eat half a dozen, I'm in eggstacy

Yes, scrambled, deviled, poached, boiled, or fried
Eggs are good, so long as they've died
That's eggs
Recently killed eggs

When your egg is alive, you must send it back
To go live with its mom in the chicken shack
Full of eggs
Living eggs

But the dead embryos that the mom begets
Are tomorrow's quiches and omelettes
That's eggs
Versatile eggs

I have roamed to Ghana, I have Ghana to Rome
Did Juneau that all they eat in Nome
Is eggs
Penguin eggs

And Jamaican girls with their brown-skinned legs
Smoke marijuana and they swear by eggs
Funky eggs
Reefer and eggs

Oh, the egg has something for all humans
Certain folk like the yolk, some like albumen
Even men on the moon use the shell for ships
That they fly through the night during each eggclipse

Yes an egg a day keeps the doctor near
And the bartender, too, as he drops in your beer
An egg
A great big fucking egg

Oh eggs are good, good good good are eggs
Eat them fresh as they fall from a chicken's legs
Eat eggs
Handfuls of eggs

Grade-A, extra-large
Fuel-injected, super-charged
Eggs.

[Chorus:]
Cause I saddle up my horse

I make a lot of noise
Cause the girls
They are so pretty
Riding up and down Broadway
on my old stud Leroy
And the girls say
Save a horse, ride a cowboy.
Everybody says
