Thanks for the heads up on the bib numbers!  Looks like this race is about full... over 2400 people.  I am bib number 1291.

Checked the weather forcasts and it looks like low 80's with very little wind.  That would be nice if it is accurate.  Flying in from Pittsburgh on the 15th to soak it all in.  Staying at Hyatt Place in N. Austin near the University.

Excited about the race as this is my first HIM!

I'm #2275 and will be in the same wave as you. I'll be in an Xterra Vendetta if it's legal (maybe even if it's not!) and a red and white Kiwami one piece if it's not. Yell hi if you remember!
My main goal is to not be last out of the water and next goal is to beat my Timberman time of 5:28 from my first HIM in 2009.
I'm flying down from Nova Scotia Canada for this one so I'm pretty excited to do the race and see the city.

Yes, right now the weather forecast looks pretty good, but wait until about 5 days out before you can really start counting on what they have listed. The forecast for that weekend should stabilize by then and they should have a somewhat viable forecast at that point.

Swam in the lake again yesterday. Didn't measure the temp, but it was definitely cool enough for a wetsuit. It was during the day, so the top of the water was warmer, but when I dropped my feet straight down, the water was a bit chilly.

Its unlikely that we'll have enough hot days and nights in the next week to warm it up, but stranger things have happened in Texas.

Oh, and I'm bib #931. Holy cow, there are almost 400 guys in my age group (M35-39). Even in 2 waves, that's still 200 guys per wave. It'll be nice and crowded. I'll be the guy in my wave zig-zagging back and forth, since I seem to have alignment issues in the water!

Wow, Greg.. I am in your age group as well and had no idea there were that many.  It should definitely be interesting.  I am BIB 1274 by the way.

So, I'm an idiot and I waited wayyyyy to long to book my flight, and now it's just simply out of my budget. And driving IS possible, however, at almost 1100 miles each way, it'd be a helluva drive by myself in one weekend.

I know it's a LONG shot, but, is anyone driving from the mid-west? I live in Indianapolis and would be able to be most places by Thursday evening/night in preparation for the drive. I would be GLAD to pay for part of the costs of the trip. Also, I wouldn't be imposing on you once we get to Austin, as I already have my roommates family that I will be staying with.

Basically, looking to piggy-back my way down there.

If anyone knows anyone or has any info, I'd love you for it .

I am having a P3 built up for me specifically for the race, and I would hate to not be able to use it this year.

Did you check Southwest Airlines? Looks like they've got $265 to $347 each way, and if you go back on Tues, its even cheaper at $129 each way.

Not to get personal, but if you can afford a P3, surely you can afford airfare.

I had looked at them, but I budgeted <400 for travel, and at 265 each way was a little more than I could swing. However, upon rechecking this morning, they've got tickets for 120+taxes (150) each way if I fly in late Friday and leave early Tuesday.

looks like its do-able! :-D

Awesome! Glad you can fly down instead of having to drive. That would be a long road trip.

Good luck at the race!

Taper madness is setting in, so I thought I'd look at some numbers.

2008 was my PR for this course with a 4:55:28 on a slightly short swim.

For the 14 weeks prior to a two week taper here's what I did:

swam 23,000 yards, rode 735.74 miles, ran 202.9 miles

This year during the same time frame:

swam 31,000 yards, rode 1,180 miles, ran 261.92 miles

Other factoids for 2008:

number of 10+ mile runs: 5
number of 13+ mile runs: 2
number of 50+ mile rides: 4
number of 60+ mile rides: 2
Normalized power last 2 60+ mile rides: 188 watts

For 2010:

number of 10+ mile runs: 9
number of 13+ mile runs: 5
number of 50+ mile rides: 9
number of 60+ mile rides: 7
Normalized power on last 2 60+ mile rides: 201 watts

I think I'm ready for another PR.

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to do a relative easy ride of the course tomorrow morning before a day full of ACL.  Anyone interested?

For me, that means probably 18-19 mph.

I'm coming in from Colorado and can only fit one set of wheels in the bike case on the airplane.  The road conditions sound very rough -- chance of breaking Zipp wheels?  Thanks, Cam.

Not quite as detailed as yours but here are my factoids:

2009 (Jan-Oct):
Swim: 72,950 yd (1:56/100m)
Bike: 1400 mi. (18.5 mph)
Run: 365mi. (8:01/mi.)
Longhorn 70.3 time: 5:37:xx

2010 (Jan-Oct):
Swim: 44,400 yd (1:49/100yd)
Bike: 1380 mi. (18.3 mph)
Run: 335 mi. (8:04/mi.)
Longhorn 70.3 time: TBD

Not quite sure what to expect from myself this year based on the numbers but I'm hoping for a slightly better performance than last year (my first 70.3).

* I should be a bit faster in the water based on the above.
* In my head, I'm faster/stronger on the bike this year but that isn't quantified by the numbers above.  I am riding a 2009 Felt B2 tri bike this year rather than my 1992 Trek 7-speed road bike with aerobars I rode last year.
* My biggest goal for this year's race is to not bonk on the run like I did last year.  That will probably mean easing off a bit on the bike and watching my run pace.  Didn't have a GPS watch last year so it took me 3 miles to get my run pacing under control.  Should be able to track it form the start this year.

Gear Bag Question-
They suggest that you check your gear bags in Saturday during check in but I wanted to get the advice of those that have done this race before.  Is that the way to go or do you prefer to check them in the morning of the race?

It hailed last night but air temp right now is 85F.  Welcome to Texas!

No idea what the water temp is like.  Pack your wetsuit to be on the safe side.  It was wetsuit legal last year (barely).

I brought mine Sunday morning last year - no biggie.  May do it Sat night this year since my wave goes off at 8:30 or something.  Ugh...

It will depend on the weather. If its going to rain Sat night (not likely at this time) I would keep my shoes and hat until Sunday morning. Last year I left my T2 gear bag overnight, and it was fine. Its one less thing to think about on race morning. (If you're like me, you don't want to think about anything that day!)

I'm excited too!

I drove the part of the course this evening that's under construction, and its not done yet. However, its only 1 mile, and the road was actually much smoother than before, with no loose gravel or big rocks. (Its on Hog Eye Road, between

I guestimate it will be completed on Monday morning the day after the race.

THANK!  I leave in the morning and will get there early on Friday, unless we decide to drive the 15 hours straight thru; not likely.  I will definately drive the course before the race.
