I'm gonna race March 24 in Rigby (Idaho) anyone our there have any great tips on the swim in frigid waters?
A local bike shop is gonna rent out wet suits and has never done so -they don't know how to size them, they saw a sucker and invited me to try out a few and report back.
Hence, I got talked into the race. Does bodyglide help? How do you catch your breath when your diving into spring snow-melt?
First, you want the wetsuit to feel slightly too-tight on land. It should take a while for you to put it on. If it goes on easy, it's too big. It takes me several minutes to get mine on - plastic bags over the feet to slide my feet through, then slowly working it up my legs, snug in the crotch, then pulling it up from the waist. Clip your fingernails if you don't want a hole in the suit.
I need body glide around all the openings: neck, armpits (I have a sleeveless ), and ankles (just for ease of removal ). DeSoto two-piece wetsuits would be a good bet, much easier to get the right size and better fit when you remove torso-length from the equation, especially since you guys will be flying in the dark.
How frigid is frigid? You'll definitely want a full-suit, and maybe booties and a cap. I know some people pour warm water down their suit to "soften the blow" before getting in the water, some pee in it. |
