Did a 42 mile bike ride on saturday. First half I was thinking I was way fast. Found on why on the last 20 miles. 15 mph winds into my face the whole way back.

First time ever got hot spots on the balls of my feet. I have spd mtn bike shoes and pedals.

Am thinking of road shoes and pedals for the tri bike when it comes in.

How do the gear shifters work on the end of the aero bars? I assume squeeze down to change down but how do you gear up?

Good job Tiny.

I went from 280 pounds 3 years ago to 180 today. Still want to lose another 10 pounds. No loose skin, but It took me 100 weeks to lose 100 pounds so it was slow. The first weeks would lose 4 pounds a week. After 6 months I would hit a plateau and lose nothing for a couple of months and then start losing a pound a week.

Same way the old down tube shifters worked, basically.

Right hand: Rear derailer. lift up for an easier gear, down for a harder.
Left hand: Front derailer. lift up for a harder gear, down for an easier.

I reached my first short term goal today 299 lbs.

Now I am off to capture my next victory. Bike and rider under 300 lbs, bike weighs 20 lbs. I figured this is more interesting than saying I want to loose 20 more pounds.

Way to go Tiny!

Now all you have to do is learn how to unclip... wink.

At least you had the good sense not to fall on the wife.

I'm gonna race March 24 in Rigby (Idaho) anyone our there have any great tips on the swim in frigid waters?

A local bike shop is gonna rent out wet suits and has never done so -they don't know how to size them, they saw a sucker and invited me to try out a few and report back.

Hence, I got talked into the race. Does bodyglide help? How do you catch your breath when your diving into spring snow-melt?

First, you want the wetsuit to feel slightly too-tight on land. It should take a while for you to put it on. If it goes on easy, it's too big. It takes me several minutes to get mine on - plastic bags over the feet to slide my feet through, then slowly working it up my legs, snug in the crotch, then pulling it up from the waist. Clip your fingernails if you don't want a hole in the suit.

I need body glide around all the openings: neck, armpits (I have a sleeveless), and ankles (just for ease of removal). DeSoto two-piece wetsuits would be a good bet, much easier to get the right size and better fit when you remove torso-length from the equation, especially since you guys will be flying in the dark.

How frigid is frigid? You'll definitely want a full-suit, and maybe booties and a cap. I know some people pour warm water down their suit to "soften the blow" before getting in the water, some pee in it.

Hey you got room for me?

I'm Barbara, I'm 48, I've done one baby sprint tri this past August and I am doing my next one 5/18 - with a REAL open water swim. It's been a year+ long journey already, with learning how to swim, just got a bike this past fall and though I'm not fast I'm working on it.

Two kids one hubby no job at the moment. No particular weight loss issues. Just confidence issues.

And I am supposedly doing a HIM this fall. (GULP)

frigid means the lake is dry right now with snow in the bottom and as soon as the mountain snow runoff gets high enough it will fill that lake - I GOTTA BE NUTS!

Nuther question - I downloaded one of the silver level plans and it says that after certain workouts I can add core 1-2 or 3 - but maybe I'm dense cause I can't find out what those are...can you help?

Oh jeez... I wouldn't swim unless it was greater than 50 F.

edit: ok, that's a lie - I wouldn't swim unless it was at least 65 F

Here's a guide for wetsuit thickness:
http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/sm-wetsuit-style-and-thickness-by...

Notice below 50 and they say start using a DRYsuit.

These guys say you can get away with a 5/3 suit (a very thick suit) down to 40 F:

http://wetsuitgear.com/temp_chart.html

I'll see if I can find what the core 1/2/3 are.

You swim, bike and run, your non tri friends and co workers already think you are nuts... wink.

I am thinking for those temps it should be kayak, bike and run.

Info on getting aero. Based on 40k time trial, which is roughly 25 miles.

I found a Desoto wetsuit on Craigslist. It is supposed to be brand new. But when I asked if it was a Black Pearl or First wave, he replied it was made before that distinction.

I know wetsuits deteriorate with age. How old can an un used wetsuit be and still be useable?

What should I look for besides cracks? And anything I should know about age cracks?

Huh. I had no idea, so I started doing some research. These things don't last quite as long as I thought they did: http://360guide.info/wetsuits/buying-used-wetsuits.html?Itemid=16

Hi Lee:

I've just signed up for my 1st triathlon and am scared to death. Is your mentor group still open? Your life sounds very similar to mine and I could use some real life guidance.

Thanks,

 Danielle

Sure Danielle, welcome!

I understand about the fear: I had a couple of sleepless nights before my first one.

The anticipation is the worst part, once the gun goes off, it's a snap. Put in the training, the race will take care of itself.

Thanks Lee.

Guess that is a pass on the wetsuit.

Welcome Danielle!

Most of us were scared for our first tri. And most of us had a great time during our first race.
