Invigilator - good for you, on both accounts. It must have been maddening to think that your first event was so far out. Best of luck with whichever event you choose - 3 weeks?? I think we'll be racing the same weekend, June 1 for me for the Milton Sprint, which I believe Caius is also doing. I get nervous everytime I think about it. Need to open water swim before race day, so I don't have any sudden surprises about swimming in a wetsuit.

Congrats on the PR in running, I'm going to toot my own horn as well as I ran just under 14K today. My GPS went on the fritz (right after I downloaded an update) so I ran just based on HR. Kept it nice and steady and felt really good - but after a 60K ride yesterday I almost felt like throwing in the towel in the first couple of km because the legs just didn't want to cooperate. But they relaxed into the run and I really enjoyed it. Personal plan is to try and run one longer distance every week - the only problem being that it will usually coincide with the longer ride, so the legs may not appreciate it - just don't know how to get around that.

Hope everyone else had a productive weekend, and I think we should be owed at least one race report.

Squishy

Squishy,  Those distances are great.  I look forward to getting that far before too long.

I hear you about the wetsuit.  May 31 is early to be out in the water, but I am going out a week earlier to get used to the suit.  I'll probably do a swim/bike brick that day.  I have a bike run brick scheduled for Friday.  Brick training is new to me.  I am looking at a 13.5k bike, followed by a 2.8k run.  I am going to let that brick determine which race I do on May 31st.

Race report done!  I ran 56:08 (or 56:07 per my Garmin!) and was very pleased with how I did, based on how much I have trained for running.  If I want to run any faster, I have to find the time to run longer than 10K.  I did see my pace go to 4:55 min/km at one point.  More training might mean I could keep it up.

My time was still a PR for me for I'd say the last 10 years.  I had a better result before kids but I'll take this one!  Having kids is worth it!

Congrats to Invigilator and Tracy for their PR's and Suishy sounds like you had a great weekend too!!

I did a brick workout this weekend too, distances were not too far but it was good. I am getting used to the transition between the bike and the run. I even got in a little swimming afterwards. I got a new bike for Mother's day, its a Raleigh Sport road bike (someday I will get a tri bike , when I get rich lol). I am very excited about it, its going to be much faster than my cruiser bike I have been training on. Only trouble is it was raining all day with a lot of wind so I couldn't go out for a ride : (

Have a great start to your week everyone !

I love my Garmin 305 especially the way it picks up satellites so quickly, and even when it's cloudy!  I have a 201 and it was really slow to pick up the satellites from downtown Calgary.    I also love how it works on this site, either by uploading your route or using the Import from Garmin right in the training log.

It also has a multisport feature which can take you through the bike and run portions of a triathlon.  Now, if only it could be worn during and record your swim.  That's probably next year's model!

Careful if you ever do an update from the Garmin site - I did this weekend, and at the same time it erased the GPS software. I reinstalled yesterday and everything is fine again.

As for swimming, I actually plan on using my 305 for all 3 legs of my first traithlon. A number of people have posted about sticking it in a ziplock baggie and then sticking it under your swim cap. As soon as I get a chance to open water swim then this is what I plan to do, and we'll see how well it works.

I love the multisport function and have used it for a couple of bricks. Surprisingly the new 405 doesn't have that function, which seems odd.

Gloria - Congrats on the new bike! I think its a rule though, that it has to rain every time you plan on riding a new bike outside. Thats what seems to be happening to me.

I tried for another run this morning on the trail I found yesterday. I had a bit too many minor aches and pains left over from yesterday though, so I thought it better to just take a rest day today.

At some point, I'll post a pic of my bike for this year.  It is a 1980's, British made Raleigh 10 speed.  It is in excelletn condition, but the frame is way too big (the seat post is almost all the way down).

Strange workout today.  I have been off of swimming for about 2 weeks.  At that point, I was in the second last week of the 0 to 1650 program.  Today I go in to do a set that works out to 930m.  I completed it before, but it was hard.  Today, I just kept going.  By the time I stopped, I had done 1.5k.

Gotta love taking time off and coming back stronger than when you left!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Invigilator, I'm impressed. I know that time away from the pool for me is like the kiss of death - it takes me forever to get back up to speed. I missed my swim yesterday morning, and I know by now that I shouldn't do that cause of how I'll swim the next time out.

I'm jealous....

Thanks man.  It was strange, but after the last few weeks, these last 2 training days have renewed my confidence.

I also didn't realize how quick my races are coming up.  I have a 5K race in less than 2 weeks and a tri in less than 3.  YIKES!  It keeps slipping my mind, and then I go through the OMG all over again!

Took a slow run at lunch today for 5K, and just tried to keep the HR down since the legs were still really heavy from the weekend. Felt great in terms of breathing, but the legs felt all wrong for the whoel run.

Hill repeats tomorrow (no rain pleaaase).

Hope everyone is off to a good start for the week.

With my first 5k run on Sunday, my first 1.5K swim and an Aikido seminar on Monday, today was rest day.  I have my running course tomorrow, and I think we have hill work too.  GL

Hi Everyone!

Well the week is starting out good, I finished classes for the semester and I am taking the summer off for the first time in 2 years since I started back. It wasn't raining, windy, or snowing today in fact the sun almost felt warm so I took my new bike out for a ride. Not too far....I have to remember what they said about how to shift it lol ! Its WAY faster than my old bike I am excited to have it! Less then 2 weeks for my first Tri, I am tapering down the workouts but its strange not to be all out pushing myself every night after work.

Hope you all are having a good week so far !

I have a sprint tri on Monday the 26th.  Should be a lot of fun and am looking forward to it!  I think there are about 11 BT'ers signed up for it.

Took a hit in the head last night in a lacrosse game by a stick.  Our 11 year old son's team had a end-of-the-season party.  There are like 30 or more kids on the entire 5th - 8th grade teams (2).  They challenged us dads (and coaches) to a "no contact" match.  3/4 through the game, we were up by one goal, and I remember hearing "pop!" and I was on the ground.  A quick knot formed on my head right at the hairline.  I had to sit out for a few minutes and had some cobwebs, but was able to resume playing.  Hehehhe!!

Just posting to vent - it's raining, again. Supposed to be riding, instead I'll be stuck indoors. With only 2 1/2 weeks to go, I really needed to get the riding in, and the next couple of days are out - aaaaggghhhh.

Thank you for listening.

Hello Everyone!

A little over two weeks until my first tri as well! I feel your anxiety and pain! Well, maybe not Terry's pain. Didn't you know those lacrosse sticks are expensive? What are you doing beating on them with your head anyway?

I'm with squishy, I need a lot more time in the saddle and everytime I try to get outside its raining and cold! Well, it was just breezy today, so I got the bike out before work. Everything was feeling pretty good until I was riding past a house with a loud growling dog as big as a volkswagon in the front yard. I didn't see a leash but thought that maybe they had an invisible fence. No such luck. The dog made his way out into the street and took up hot pursuit with my left leg! I was riding up hill at that point and pedaling for all I was worth. He was just about to take a big chomp out of my left foot when I crested the hill and gained speed. I pulled away as he stood growling at me in the street. Hey, on the bright side, it was the best sprint workout I ever had!

I'm on the road until friday night now, but when I get home I'm going wetsuit shopping!

Have a great week everyone!

Timmeh - way to get away from Cujo!! I haven't run into that situation yet, just barking.

So I decided last night, that I was going to say screw you to the weather gods, and grabbed the bike out even though it was wet. Glad I did, cause when I arrived at the spot to do hill repeats it was basically a drizzle, and stayed that way for the majority of the hour I was out. I got wet, but not cold - I was too busy huffing and puffing up the hill.

Did 5 repeats = 1541 feet of climbing, at a max 15% grade. This is the hill 2 km into my tri in 2 weeks, so I better be ready for it. Tough going up, btu lots of fun going down. I'm going to try to attach what the elevation looks like.

good hill workout Squshy !

Only 8 days left for me till my first tri and counting down fast ! Any first timer advise for me ? I have just been doing some light workouts this week so I don't go crazy, it's hard for me sit still. I guess I am doing ok because I lost another 3 pnds at my weigh in tonight, so not sitting around on my taper too much I figured.

We finally have some sun out ...the weekend is going to be in the 80's ! WOW, real sun with wamth too !

hope it holds out for the next weekend and the race!
