I've always been intrigued by adventure racing, but mountain biking was always a bit of a deal breaker for me. I love trail running and enjoy kayaking, though. Maybe someday...

Good luck with the race, Sarah...sounds like fun!

Y'all are starting to use "inspires" in logs more...good to see that! I'll try to do my part...let's see if everyone can't get in at least one workout that just really asks for a hearty "atta boy" (or "girl"...) between now and the end of the week. I'll be on the lookout...

My schedule this week is M-F planting, spraying, and disking. Not much time to use for training. Maybe I'll squeeze a workout in this week. Probably this weekend since it is supposed to rain.

John - awesome job on the race! 400m is a heck of a long way to run barefoot out of a pool in the cold.

Sarah - I'll bet adventure racing is awesome! Do they supply you with a boat at the race or do you have to bring your own? Because who owns a boat...

Matt - Seriously, I am so excited for you for getting commissioned. Being a Platoon Leader is the GREATEST time ever! I got 15 months as a PL (I'm Intel, by the way) and it has really been the most rewarding thing I've done in my life... next to the whole becoming a mom thing. Some advice though - DO COUNSELING! Everybody blows it off, but if you have a dirtbag you want to get rid of you can't do it without paperwork. Or if you have a really great guy you want to reward it's good to have that in writing too. And Soldiers love to know they are doing a good job and you appreciate them.

So I've been trying to get back in gear this week after two weeks of sitting on my butt. My plan is (although I guess it's not really a plan since it's already Thursday...):

Monday: strength training and easy 3 mi run (complete)
Tuesday: Army Physical Fitness Test (2 min push ups, 2 min sit-ups, 2 mi run) and 800m swim (complete)
Wednesday: rest....to reward myself for beating the pants off my boss on the APFT
Thursday: 1 hr interval workout on the bike trainer (complete) and swimming drills
Friday: strength training and 5 mi run
Saturday: road bike....of yet undetermined length
Sunday: mountain bike ride (in-laws will be in town so I'll get to drag the hubby along - SO fun...)

Also, don't know if any of you get BICYCLING magazine, but the May issue has some stuff about tris in it. Mostly geared towards bikers who want to become triathletes, but it brings up a good point that in an Oly race biking is 50% so if you are a strong biker and mediocre at everything else you will be pretty successful. They also have an article on bikes and gear and such...although their idea of "affordable" and mine is a little different.

Lastly, does anybody have any good swimming drills? I'll generally do a 400 freestyle warm-up, then a 400 just legs with the kickboard, a 400 just arms with the floatie thing that goes between your legs, and then a 400 freestyle cool-down. I think my biggest problem is kicking and using my arms at the same time. But a guy at the pool told me 80% of your power in swimming comes from your arms so the primary purpose of your legs should be just to keep you floating and in a rythm. And this guy was a pretty awesome swimmer so maybe he was right....

Anyway, good luck to everybody this week!

Hi guys-
Great job Courtney on the APFT. As for swimming drills, I have found that the one arm catch up drill is great for gliding and kicking...but also for body positioning. Do you have fins? I think this is one you really need fins for. I have the Zoomers Z2 I think they are and it has made a huge difference in my body position but also in giving a stronger quieter kick. I think they were about $22/pair and well worth it. I do other drills like kicking on side for body positioning because I have a tendency for my legs to sink, but doing the drills has helped alot. I'm sure the rest of the gang and Todd will have more suggestions.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know how to change the size of a picture so I can upload a new avatar? It keeps saying the file is too big. I am computer challenged that's for sure, so the simpler the better

Have a nice day all!

Courtney- I cant wait to leave for BOLC II  and then OBC.  I am still stuck on my branch though.  I cant decide if i want Armor, Field Artillery, or Engineer.  I 13b which is enlisted FA right now and i enjoy it, but a lot of things change once you get that bar.  Plus i didnt know if i wanted to get Armor and hopefully get into a Stryker Brigade.  But Combat Engineer i heard it awesome and i could use the engineering if i ever decided to get out.  I am all confused lol.  Counseling thats all my LTC ever talks about.  But everything you say is true.  I am just going to have to remember to stay on top of it and also make sure my NCOs do to.

Kim- Here is a website that you can go to, to Download Infranview.  It is a cool free application that lets you edit pictures easily.  You can also play with some cool effects too if you want.  If comes with a couple of pre-set sizes that you can use to easily resize your image.

Good, strong finish to the week! (Congrats on the APFT "triumph"...)

Hmm. I'd say that's a trap, actually. The bike does consume the most calories of the three segments at all distances, so that segment rewards training disproportionately (esp. compared to the swim)...but...

In my experience, where most triathletes underprepare dramatically is for the run. (Even on the pro level, you see "bike specialists" at the IM distance trying unsuccessfully to hold off better runners after building a big lead coming off the bike.) A lot of triathletes struggle with the run and enjoy the bike...and they succumb to the tendency to overdo the bike and try to just survive the run.

Why do I say this? Because for a very large percentage of triathletes (at least age groupers), the "run" isn't really a "run"--it's a "run/walk". This isn't true of the bike...other than some athletes on some steep hills, the bike segment is a "ride" for everyone.

For the Oly 10K: It isn't at all uncommon to see people running 6:15/mile or better and others run/walking at 11:00/mile. The latter is only 57% of the pace of the former. On the bike, if the top end athletes are averaging 24 mph on a flat course, 57% would be all the way down at 13.75 mph. For a flat 24.8 mi course, most people are going to do at least that well, probably better. In my recent international distance race--on a very flat bike course--I finished very near the bottom of my age group and was averaging well over 19 mph.

(Edit to add: Specifically, in my AG, the fastest run took only 56.8% of the time for the slowest--a difference of just about 30 min--whereas the fastest bike segment took 75.3% of the slowest for a 20 min. difference...so the spread on the run is much greater than the bike...poor cyclists lose much less ground than poor runners--or run/walkers--in triathlon.)

So the advantage in tris really goes to those who can run all, or at least most of, the run segment. Just my two cents...

And this guy was a pretty awesome swimmer so maybe he was right....

There's a tendency in tris to deemphasize kicking, not just because it doesn't contribute a lot to your speed, but also to conserve the muscles for the bike and run. (Tri wetsuits are specifically designed to minimize the benefits of kicking.) So doing laps with a pull buoy (that betw. the legs thing) are beneficial. I don't have a lot of drills to offer...don't do a lot myself other than occasional intervals. During my HS swim team days, we didn't do a lot of drills, mostly laps, with some periodic kickboard and pull buoy work.

Happy Friday, everyone!

So...how'd the week go? As planned? All to heck?

How do you feel about that?

What are you proud of that you did this week? (Doesn't have to be tri-related, by the way.)

And what's up for the weekend?

Doesn't appear anyone's racing this weekend...am I missing anyone? (My wife, Liz, is doing a 5K charity walk that we hadn't planned on...the head of her department at Disney Home Entertainment invited her to take part in a "team", so she couldn't really say "no." So I'm solo tomorrow...swimming, then first ride on the new bike.)

Well the week was stressful.  I just now finished my final paper for the semester.  And there was one grade i planned on being better, but other than that life is great.

I wish i would have got more swim and bike workouts done this week, i was just so busy i did not have the time, and if maybe i had a little time i was exhausted.

I got my bike yesterday and i am pretty excited.  The only thing is i have no clue how to put it together so the bike shop is going to charge be $50 to put it together.  Kinda stinks but its all i can do.  Some pics will be coming up soon, its pretty sweet.

Yeah, I'm always reluctant to spend money to have someone else work on my bike, but in this case, it should be money well spent...you'll be all set to ride. Looking forward to the pictures!

Happy friday to all!

I think I did everything I wanted to do, skipped spin class yesterday, but did some good hills running outdoors instead of treadmill, so that was good.
I am in open water denial right now, so I need to get myself to a lake this weekend. I just cannot bring myself back to Aquatic Park, it is 57 degrees in there and I cannot breathe in that temp water. On the other hand, I am feeling rather good about my swimming endurance, so it is more mental than anything else. Was thinking of just winging it for the race, but all of the advice points to at least getting in a lake with the wetsuit on and making sure it at least fits!

Wish me luck!
Have a great weekend everyone!

Absolutely!!! As the completely-valid truism goes: "Nothing new on race day." So that includes not just swimming in the wetsuit, but getting out for an open water swim in something at least resembling the temps you'll swim in during the race. No winging it! (Really.)

FINALLY got my butt in gear today after a week of not doing anything. It's harder then I thought to keep up with training while on the other side of the country. Walked two miles to a local pool today and can really tell I've been out for a week, (not good...). I'm averaging a blazing 1:50/100yd in the pool. Good? Bad? I really have no idea. I just started swimming laps in March.

My first tri is on June 1st, (400 yd swim, 10 mi bike, 3 mi run), and while I know that I can complete all of these distances without too much difficulty, doing them in a row has me slightly concerned.

I'm not getting home until May 17th, with less than 2 weeks until that tri. I'm definatly going through with it, but I wish I felt more prepared.

Live and learn I guess!

True dat. When we were in Maine over the holidays to visit my wife's family, I did all I could to keep working out, but it mostly came down to treadmill or elliptical in my brother-in-law's basement...no bike or swim for over a week...and I put on almost seven lbs!!!

So, good on ya for making the effort!

Walked two miles to a local pool today and can really tell I've been out for a week, (not good...). I'm averaging a blazing 1:50/100yd in the pool. Good? Bad? I really have no idea. I just started swimming laps in March.

Anything under 2 minutes per 100 yds is generally seen as above average for beginners...you're doing very well.

My first tri is on June 1st, (400 yd swim, 10 mi bike, 3 mi run), and while I know that I can complete all of these distances without too much difficulty, doing them in a row has me slightly concerned.

Dirty little secret? Nobody's ever really prepared for the first one and nerves are a natural part of the experience. For my first tri, I actually got to do two full "dress rehearsals" on the course with my wife's corporate tri team and I still was thrown off stride come race day. Why? The swim! Until you've done a tri swim start with all the adrenaline flowing and bodies jostling, you haven't gotten the full experience.

Just make sure you have at least one good brick workout in by at least, say, eight days before your tri and you'll have a handle on it. So sometime betw. May 18 and May 25, try to get a 10 mile bike/2-3 mile run brick in...and concentrate on spending as little time betw. the bike and the run as you can. Wear what you'll be wearing for the race for that workout, if at all possible.

Live and learn I guess!

Just be sure to have fun!

Just be sure to take it all in and enjoy your first tri since you can only have "one" first tri. I know i'm still new to this sport and a very competitive person by nature, but i wouldnt get to hung up on having to place well in your AG or "i hope i'm going fast" mentality.  Just nose about, meet some new people, and see how cool the whole triathlon event is   As Todd said, no matter how hard you train, i suspect you always feel as if your not ready.

Keep getting those workouts in whenever you can and have fun with it!

Well, it looks like i may have talked myself into my next race.

Cutting Edge Half Classic in Effingham, ILL on june 29th.

Really nervous about doing a HIM just yet, mainly because of the swim portion, but i've started following a plan thats 8 weeks out and will see how i feel in the swim workouts leading up to the race. Apparently the race didn't sell out last year as you could still get in leading up to race day so I'm going to give myself a month more of training before registering.

Maybe i'm just being a wuss and should just suck it up and do it. Either way thats my tentative plan atm just so ya'll know.

Erm...I wouldn't say you're being a wuss at all...even considering stepping up to a half iron on this sort of lead time takes some cojones, to put it mildly.

Looking at last year's results, it is a pretty small race and looks like it wasn't close to a sellout, so you probably do have the luxury of waiting to register, if you want to go that way.

I'm sure the swim will go okay for you...it isn't a big race, so there can only be so many people thrashing around in the water with you. As long as the training plan makes sense to you and feels achievable, there's no reason not to go for it. Make sure that you are building to at least a couple long rides over 45 miles and at least one 10 mile or longer run with time to taper.

Good luck!

Hey...while I'm thinking of it...and in case I'm not online later: Everyone have a safe and pleasant Mother's Day weekend. I've got the whole birthday thing overriding the whole Mother's Day thing, personally, but I hope everyone who does have anything planned with the various moms in their lives has a very nice time!

Good morning (barely here), everyone, and happy Monday! Weather's grim here in LA, but I'm grateful that "grim" weather here doesn't usually involve destructive storms and the like. I wasn't prepared for the drizzle that greeted me when I got off the subway with my bike downtown. Yuck.

This was an "improvised" morning for me: Stupidly, I forgot that my drivers license was due to expire on my birthday yesterday until Friday night when it was too late to do anything about it over the weekend (no Saturday ofc hours for the DMV this weekend). So I got about 3 miles extra on my commute ride this morning: Extra stretch to the DMV, then longer ride from there to the subway. So I guess that's something.

What's up this week, guys? At least a couple races on tap next weekend, I know...

For me (since I've got one of those races)--

Today -- Bike commute w/ that extra jog to the DMV - 9 mi & 6 mi
Tues -- Easy taper run, 5 mi.
Wed -- TBD (at least 12 mi of bike commute, might do one full ride rather than subway, which makes the total 26 mi)
Thurs -- Easy run, 4 mi.
Fri -- Bike commute - 12 mi
Sat -- Drive to SF, pick up race packet downtown, hopefully 20 min swim in hotel pool
Sun -- Bay to Breakers 12K in SF

I'm told this is Bike to Work Week -- I'm doing it already...anyone else doing any bike commuting this week?

Hey everyone - I've been checking everyone's logs and everyone is doing great.

My adventure race went well. We ended up finishing in a little over 12 hrs. From 6 am until about 1pm the weather cooperated, but in the afternoon the skies opened up and it rained pretty much all afternoon. The kayaking section was last and I was really worried when we were getting into the boats already soaking wet that I was gonna freeze but the paddling ended up being one of my favorite sections of the race. I really like doing races when the weather is bad, it shows you that your body and mind can pretty much handle anything. Typically it never ends up being as cold/hot/wet/miserable as you are expecting it to be!!
I saw a bald eagle on the kayak and saw a bald eagle's nest on the bike section. My AR teammates and I are all doing individual stuff this summer but we'll be getting back together again in the fall for a 24 hr race.

Anyways, on to triathlons. My foot has been bothering me so I will be focusing on biking and swimming this week. I am getting the foot looked at tonight, we'll figure out what's up.

Today: swim, done!
Tuesday: swim
Wednesday: bike
Thursday: swim am, bike pm
Friday: bike or rest
Saturday: swim, long road bike
Sunday: mountain bike if the weather is good (the area mountain bike trail systems are very strict in terms of not letting people ride when the trails are wet)

Cheers - Sarah

I had my best swim today!! My stroke count averages 20, but I was hitting 18-19 !! And my 100yd average is 1:50, but in my 10th 100yd I hit 1:43. Progress!!! I was excited so I had to share!

Glad to see everybody's doing well, have a great week!
