Redknight - 2008-05-09 1:26 PM It must tbe nice to have someone to train with. I have done all my training on my own. I need to find some groups around the area to train with. I now that when I was practicing and teaching karate it was so much easier when there was a group where you could support each other. Determintation will take me where I want to go which is eventually an Ironman. I do enjoy the friendships which seem to be developing here.

That's why you have us! *group hug*

I had a good run today. 55 minutes 5.62 miles. That was actually a little quicker than anything previous. The only issue now is that my calves are sore and tired still. (almost 4 hours later) Do you have any suggestions to combat this? I'm one of the newbs and this is my longest run to date. I thnk next week my schedule bumps me up another 10 miutes or so.

Just drink plenty of water, ice might help on the calves, and eat a banana for the potassium.

Beyond that, welcome to the realm of the "long run"

Best of luck although I suspect it won't be needed. With all the training this should be a breeze for you. Have lots of fun

swbkrun - 2008-05-08 2:11 PM  Do not mess around. I tried to play the tough guy, and I went from 75% better, now six weeks later I am back @ 40% and FORBIDDEN to workout by doctors, and all the workouts in the past 6 weeks have been bad!! Don't rush it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So no North Face race this weekend?  Bummer.  People were checking in when I was at REI today.

Oh I am idiot... The race was AWESOME and so frickin' hard. Just check my log for a brief description!!! Great weather!

Got a little run in today.  I've been struggling with various aches and pains when running, but I think the new shoes are treating me right.  I ran without pain this morning and have been pain free all day (first time since 3/28).  Hopefully this means I can resume a more balanced training regime.

I'm heading out tomorrow for a little vacation and won't be checking in much.  I'm going to try to keep my logs current, but that's about it.  Sort of a compromise w/ the wife - training doesn't have to take a vacation, but BT time does.  Seems fair to me.

Have a great week training -- Peace

How do I add everyone as freinds so they can view my training and see where I can improve? Also how much weight training (if any) do you do?
Lauren: How did it go yesterday? My first tri is in about 3 weeks and I am interested in your perceprtion of your first one.

Here is something from my karate training I thought you might appreciate

I will keep my thoughts positive because my thoughts become my words.
I will keep my words positive because my words become my actions.
I will keep my actions positive because my actions become my values.
I will keep my values positive because my values become my destiny.

Let's stay postive and go out there and have fun.

My first tri was a blast! I think I may be hooked.

There were a few unexpected moments...like because of my nerves I had a hard time catching my breath during the swim, and there were a few more hills on the bike than expected...but I did it! And under my estimated time, too.

Its so fun, and everyone is so helpful. Anything I was worried about because I was a newbie, was no problem because of how helpful everyone is. Also, I realized that I didn't NEED any fancy gear (special bike, clothes, etc.), but maybe along the line it will be easier with that stuff. But really, there's nothing that should stop you from just doing a tri and seeing what its all about!

Thank you all so much for your motivation and support along the way. So, now the question is, what's the next tri I'm going to put on my schedule?! Oh yeah, and I'm going to have to practice some open water swims. That's the next frontier for me to conquer.

I am suppose to go swimming today and I really don't want to!! I'M TIRED!! Tell me again why I signed up for an olympic? Sorry, I am having a low motiviation point and need some pep-talk. My life is not real spiffy right now and tri training usually helps clear my head, providing I can get out there. Tell me again why this is fun? All I want to do is curl up on the couch and eat a gallon of ice cream, maybe with a Slim Jim or two.

No, no, no, no! You are a rock, a lean mean fighting machine!
I just came from a 2hr swimming session. You go out there and make us proud. If you don't you will let our whole group down, not to mention our fearless leader Steve. You want a pep teak, there you have it.

On a more serious note, step back, take a deep breath and don't do anything hastily. Heve the ice cream, talk with a couple of friends and come back refreshed

Best wishes

Rah rah rah. rick em.. rack em.. reck em... ruck em... jump into the pool and go get em.

Ok so I never was a cheerleader. We didnt have male cheerleaders back when they were inventing dirt and I was in school. At least that's what my kids tell me.

Hope that put a smile on your face and your heading for the pool now. Trust me if I can aim for an olympic this year at 56 you can certainly do it. Think of how good you are going to feel once you have completed teh Olympic.

I find training on those days where you feel "off" makes me stronger. When I was just working out to work out, i.e. not for any specific reasons, I would take off those days I just didn't feel too great.

Now that I am training for a purpose, unless sick I still go and 9 out of 10 times I have a great training session, especially with swimming, something about being in the water just wakes you up and gets you going.

And you are doing an olympic because you CAN... Just think of how many people CAN'T do them... I would bet that the CAN't's (hehe not sure how to write that) out weigh the CAN's...

you can do it Tracy! I was feeling the same way this morning and did not get out to the pool. I am determined, however, to get out there this afternoon.

Go get eh Tracy, I garantee you'll feel way better when you are done. I fall in to that funk more that I would like and have some of the same personal life issues, but you know what. Life happens! and I always feel better after a good run, bike or swim. I also think about the journey I have had since deciding to do an Olympic as well and where I was (over weight and lazy ) and where I am now. Huge difference and I wouldn't want to change it for the world.

Sometimes you can control life but you can control you. Get out there!!!!

OK another quick post with a couple comments and a question.

First comments, was at the pool Saturday morning to do a 1 hour and 5 minute swim totalling 3250m. I thought I wouldn't have been able to do it but low and be hold finished it in 1 hour ten minutes. I was so proud of myself. I was also talking to a guy who was swimming in the same lane and he is training for Ironman Canada and I said I would like to get there someday and he said that my swimming was strong enough to do it. I was passing him every once and while so that pumped me up as well.

Second comment/questions. I had a 2 hour bike sessions planned on Saturday night but instead of road riding I went mountain biking with a friend. We rode pretty hard and did a lot of hills and such but I feel like I cheated. Maybe just me, what do you think? I was glad I went though because I thought I might not be fit enough to keep up with my friend who is actually my personal trainer and 9 years younger. I just remembered previous years of mountain biing and always being pooped and always out of breath, but again a pleasant surprise that I hammered it out and was kicking butt and not even that tired. I guess all this training is paying off.

Any way a lot of horn tooting but I just wanted to share that I am loving my new self and am so glad I have decided to do this triathlon. Bring it on......

toot away Perry you have every right to. That's a lot of swimming at once.
remember that at Calgary's altitude the water is thinner and therefore you can go faster and further. No wait that's the air is thinner. Oh well

anyway. sounds like you are doing awesome. Are you going to be ready for HIM soon?
