hagakure - 2009-01-08 1:15 PM Really short run today with my wife who is trying to lose a bit of weight and gain fitness before our next holiday. It is really hard to run slow. I struggled and felt really heavy legged when I finished. Felt more like I had run 10 miles than 2. I am not fast by any means but felt really awful at the end. This afternoon did an hour on the trainer. Weather here is very cold, wet and foggy. I wish I could get out to ride. Its soul destroying riding indoors!

Dang straight, i hate the trainer already, but it is a necessary evil, that and the Dreadmill!!

Nah, you just need some good metal on the stereo to occupy the mind while grinding away.

So i got my head out of my and got my new training plan posted finally.. thanks to Jim and Akustix for the appropriate kick in the pants today.. :D

its a HIM training plan with my goal for the HIM in mid July.. the first few weeks are the same training schedule to allow me time to iron out logistics and get my body used to training again..

I'm also planning on adding some weigh training in but haven't included it in the plan because I wasn't sure how to integrate it just yet and wanted to get the feel of the rest of the program..

and wth.. we were on page 2!!

In one of the beginner swim programs they have a "sculling" drill. I can't really picture this. I've decide to switch my swim program to the one with more drills. I was feeling bad in the water this morning. That two weeks out of the pool messed me up.

Post the description.

But, this is what I do when it's called for.  (got to love Youtube!!!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxPgQ3LElMg

You do this drill to lean how to find 'clean' water during your pull.  When you pull, you don't pull straight back, but kind of 'wave' your hand a little to find water that's not disturbed yet.

This one is longer (the other is straight to the point), but it relates to tri a little better.  I like this one a lot.

Great video's on the swim, after i met with Bob this past weekend, he told me i was not finishing my stroke (amongst other things) but that sculling drill is one of the ones he showed me. Those videos are awesome and i know the next time i get in the pool, it will have a purpose other than just droning lap after lap at a 2:00/100 pace. I will be focusing on more drills and less swimming to make my stroke more efficient and hopefully i can gain 10-15 sec per hundred and still be fresh out of the water!!

I can't emphasize drills enough...  Swimming is SO technique oriented.  I SHOULD be doing more of them.  In fact, some plans I have, have you doing a several hundred yards of drill to warm up before every swim.

Some HUGE break through drills for me are the closed fist drill (to learn how to catch with the entire arm and not just the hand) and using a pull bouy once in a while to help get a feeling with body rotation.

At one time, I was up to 2.5 hour training rides.  To be honest, the only way I could do them is in front of the TV.  I also HAD to take some short breaks or it would have been impossible.  Every 45 minutes or so, I would get off the bike, towel off, refill the water bottle, etc.  Maybe about 3-5 minutes of rest to break it up.  So basically 2-3 breaks for the 2.5 hours.  I can do 90 min pretty comfortably, but not much more than that.

If I'm at the gym, I also have headphones and a magazine.  I destroy the magazine with all my sweat, but who cares...

Well Friday night was different this week. Instead of stooping on the way home to pick up a six pack. I stopped at the swim shop where I usually shop for my daughter and picked up a pair of blue Zoomer fins. The owner asked if they were for my daughter. I told them nope, me. That I was going to be doing a triathlon in July.
Next stop was the grocery store. Picked up some Tazo green tea and sugar free jello. Rode the trainer while watching Spinervals (Aerobic Base Builder). Did my 100 push ups in 6 week work out, some crunches and used some resistance bands for curls and shoulder exercises. I feel really, good about the night.
I'm going to switch my swimming program to this one:

I can do 1.5 hrs but thats about my limit. I watch movies on my ipod which does get me through. I actually prefer using the spin bike at the gym as there is more going on and I don't get bored as easily.

I felt really rough yesterday but went to the gym last night and had a spin then a swim. My swimming felt really weird this past week after being out of the pool for a couple of weeks but I did some paddle work and pull drills last night and flet okay at the end. Finished the evening with a few beers

Short beach run this morning which was hard but fun.

How many of you guys do masters swim classes?

I started middle of last year. I have improved my speeds a bit since then but the main difference is how smooth and efficient my stroke is becoming. I guess real speed will follow if I can get my butt into the pool more.

I've never taken a swim class lately, though I did swimcompetitively for a couple years when I was younger.  I just work on being smooth, and then try being smooth while going faster.

Training has ramped up nicely so far this year.  Cycling/trainer interval sessions are feeling pretty good.  I'll bump them up to 45:00 or 1:00:00 starting Monday.

Goofing off today, tennis doubles match tomorrow.  Autocross season isn't too far off either.  WOOT!

Just been out for a ride. It's really windy and cold today so speed was woeful. I'm just pleased to ride outside.

Went for a swim and a LSSD (long super slow distance) run this morning.  I've encountered quite a bit of resistance as the streets and sidewalks were covered with snow and ice making it tough to run at a pace faster than the one I usually run at on dry or wet pavement.  I usually run on side streets and those were not plowed when I went out.  I have nonetheless managed to keep in Z2 during the 10' run intervals.  I'll take the yaktrax out for a run the next time around.

Food for thought.

I had my RPE ranges a little wrong (based on the BT interpretation).  I was going a little hard.  I found out because my swim workout called for RPE 8.  Based on my old scale, that's a Zone 5 effort (all out sprint).  That sounded a little odd to me, so I looked at what BT uses for a conversion.  See attached:

RPE Zone HR ZoneDescription
0 Z1Complete Rest
1 Z1Very easy; light walking
2 Z1Very easy; light walking
3 Z1Very easy; walking
4 Z1Still easy, maybe starting to sweat
5 Z2Starting to work just a little and you can feel your HR rise
6 Z2 UpperWorking but sustainable, able to talk in full sentences
7 Z3Strong effort; breathing labored, but can still maintain pace for some minutes without slowing.
8 Z4Olympic Distance Race Pace for MOP to FOP
9 Z510k effort – very hard
10 Z5+Z5+ = 5k effort and Z5++ = cannot hold effort for more than a minute or two. (almost maximal effort)

That means that some of my recent runs and bikes were at RPE 6-8, instead of 3-5 per plan.  That's ok.  Just went a little harder than I was supposed to.  No harm done.

Thanks for that chart.  The one thing I want to start doing this year is monitor my HR.  Then I'll know what they mean when they say "20 min. Z2 run" etc.

Despite what may seem like a lack of training so far, I am getting my heart rate up for 45 mins or so almost daily.  Sometimes, twice daily.
