Woo-hoo! A visit from Rockin' Bob Stocks, one of the best swimmers ever. He's known to chase the pros during races . We are honored by your stopping by!

I got in a 35-minute run today. Slowly building from scratch and somewhat over my 23-minute run.

Hello from Tennessee everyone!  I hope everyone had a great Christmas. This is the first time I've had internet access since Christmas eve.

I'm currently sitting in Vanderbilt Medical Center.  My boyfriend's mother was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia back in September, and after spending a couple of days in the midst of people, she's visiting the hospital for a visit due to a low white blood cell count.  Hopefully it will just be a short stay.  My trip here hasn't included much on the training side of things, but sometimes that's how life goes.  One thing about training is that sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.

Peggy, sorry to hear about your boyfriend's mom, hope her counts come back up quickly.

As for me I finally got back on my bike/trainer tonight. Nice run, Yanti! (and to anyone else on page 5 or before--sorry, I'll have to catch up later....)

Now I'm off to a friend's house for a yummy desert and to let the kiddos (and adults) play. Merry Christmas everyone!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to stop in and say hello. You guys have some great mentors in Beth and Yanti! Good luck with your season and I hope to see some of you at a race or two somewhere in the country!

There is some great swim advice going on here. Swimming has been the hot topic on our forum as well, feel free to stop on over! The only thing I would like to add to your thread to this point is how important it is to stay relaxed in the water. It's a common problem when I teach adults, they try to take in waaaay to much and apply it all at once and tense up in the water. When doing drills, try 1 or 2 drills for just a few minutes after your warm-up then continue with your workout. I like to think of "relaxed power" when I swim. Relaxed during the recovery and powerful during the pull.

I hope this helps and doesn't cause confusion.

Hi Bob!

that is great input, you are so right about being relaxed, I think it's important no matter what disciple

thanks for stopping by

Peggy -

I'm sorry to hear about your boyfriend's mom. She's at a wonderful treatment center though! Vanderbilt is definitely one of the best hospitals in that region. My dad went through his cancer treatment there (non-hodgkins lymphoma about 20 years ago), and my sister's MS specialist is also at Vanderbilt. I actually have a couple of friends who work at the medical center, but neither of them are in oncology.

Hang in there!

Hey Manatees!

I wanted to share - today, was a personal milestone, I delivered 8 miles and a little change in under 2 hrs, actually under 1:45

this is a major milestone on two counts - the first one being distance, the second one being pace - not my fastest pace, but faster than my 7 mile pace from last week (oh, and it was a hilly, windy run )

who knows, I may just finish this 1/2 mary in under 3 hrs!

That half-mary will be here before I know it!  I'm feeling really confident though

the approach of slow and steady has been a great recipe

I predict a time of around 2:40-2:50.  Given the time left until the race for training and a dose of race day adrenalin I believe this is very possible.  OMG...that menas you have arrived as a runner...Does that means there is hope for me as a swimmer???  I hope so, because I have committed to becoming one thanks to your and Yanti's bitchin' screaming and threatening kind and loving encouragement.

Super congrats on the GREAT run.

Hello fellow manatees....I'm finally feeling better after a rough couple of days with a sinus infection.  I totally crashed on Friday and spent most of the day in bed....but I needed the rest.

I got back out there today for a short bike ride.  It was tough but it felt good to be moving again.

 Nice run Beth!

I think Steve is right on about the finishing time.

And speaking of Steve--of course there's so much hope for you and the other SWIMMERS--if you swim, you are a swimmer!

Remember how long it took to develop as a runner or get a really good base as a cyclist? The same is true of swimming, but I actually think the learning curve is shorter--once you really relax and develop the good technique, it's amazing how much better your swimming gets.

Peggy, so sorry to hear about the BF's family member.  I hope all is turning for the better.

Great stuff Yanti, Beth, and Amy.

Steve....there's always hope...

The fitness center I have been going to since my arrival here has been closed for the holidays.  The temp has been too cold here (for me) to be able to venture outside for a workout without heavy duty attire.  Lame.  I know.  But, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it....     I will be back at tomorrow.
