i would try a swim coach.. for the main reason... you can't see yourself swim.. so while looking at dvd's you can still teach yourself bad habits.

I have another swim-related question. What sort of watch do you use for your swim workouts.? I am in the market for a watch to use while swimming and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

K

I have a timex ironman watch.. i think i got on clearance from walmart.. If looking for a watch.. just get one that has a lap memory and does splits... I'm sure this watch will be the one you'll wear in a race.. So you have to have the controls at your finger tips.. splits/start and stop/reset..

go to your local running store and try on a few.. so watches look good but are hard to use.. play with a couple...

Thanks, Mo. The watch I am currently using is a very old Timex Ironman watch (8-lap memory only, yikes!) I was definitely thinking of upgrading to a newer Timex Ironman. I was just curious if there was anyone in the group using anything else, just to see the pros and cons of other watches. Thank you, as always!

I just use my daily watch and track the total time - I just use the big digital clock at my club for laps/splits. It would be nice to use my Garmin, but......it's not waterproof!

I agree with Momo. After many years of doing nothing but recreational swimming I obtained a Total Immersion DVD. It was.....ok, then I signed up for a swim clinic with TI trained coach who helped the entire class understand our flaws and teach us proper technique. Now the DVD helps because I understand what they are trying to teach. I didn't know what I was missing/doing wrong until I completed the class. I would really recommend trying to find a coach or swim class/clinic where you can get some specific instruction. Master's classes can be helpful, but a little intimidating. Something about swimming 3-4,000m during the workout at lightning speed is...not my cup of tea(yet). You can also ask members of your local tri club for a good recommendation on a swim coach.

GumbleX, do you use a Garmin 405? I got myself one when I started running again and I absolutely love it BUT I would never take mine into the water either!

Good Morning Everyone!

Regarding Mo`s January Challenge, I have put together an Excel spreadsheet to help myself countdown how many swim, bike and run distances I have to complete per week to reach the goals set for us. The spreadsheet is highly customizable, as to the weekly distances and all that you have to do is modify the ‘Weekly Goal’ cells, per discipline and make sure that you put in your daily totals. The spreadsheet automatically carries over any outstanding distances to the next week.

If anyone would be interested in using the spreadsheet or even if you just want to take a look at it, I am more than happy to e-mail it to you. If you would send me a PM with your e-mail address, I will send it on.

All the Garmin watches are really solid products. I used my dad`s Forerunner 301 before I bought my 405.

Mo, do you use the foot pod with your Garmin? I have been eyeing it on the Garmin website for ages. Since, the weather has forced me inside more often these days, the foot pod seems even more appealing. If ou do use it, is it worth the $$$?

The FR305 doesn't use the foot pod. I haven't heard much about it.. in some way i'd think it would be more accurate with distance and speed.. because everything is based on your stride. it may be worth.. With the FR 305 the is a correction of distance.. what it says isn't always correct on distance.. i run the same routes most times.. 1 of the 5 times out i'll get a different distance.. i think the foot pod would help eliminate that.

I have the Garmin Forerunner 50 which doesn't calculate elevations/mapping (I use Google pedometer), but has the automatic downloads. It is terrific, but you're right - not waterproof.

I'm thinking about a masters class....so as a "newbie" I should be intimidated? Will I be blown away?

As a new person anywhere there is always intimidation. Don't get caught in the being new.. Talk to the organizer of the swim.. He will show you the ropes.. As for swimmers, yes there will be faster swimmers.. but don't worry.. they were new before too!!! get in the pool and do what you can.. if have to take breaks take them.. you are not there to kill yourself trying to keep up with others..

I use a Garmin 305 and fell in love with it after using Polar for several years. I do use the footpod, primarily because I travel for work about 50% of the time and need to use treadmills pretty frequently. The footpod is good, but it will remind you how inaccurate your stride can be and how variable the readings on treadmills can be for distance. You will have to calibrate the footpod on a track or somewhere with a fixed distance. You are good-to-go afterwards. I also use the cadence meter and mount for my bike. I figure they will make us wait for a few years before perfecting things with a waterproof version!

How do you like the foot pod? I keep thinking about getting one, but I'm intimidated about the idea of calibrating it (and right now, I don't have the money), but I'd be interested in your impressions.

It's not necessary unless you do a fair amount of running on a treadmill or you want to track your running cadence when outside. The GPS unit does everything else for you when outside. Since I do a lot of my running inside (especially during the winter) I would not be able to track my stats (except HR) very well. Look for a good deal on ebay when/if you are ready to buy.

I have the FR 50 which uses the foot pod. It is "pre-calibrated" pretty accurately right out of the box, (w/in a few 1/100s), so I wouldn't be too concerned if it will be a while before you can re-calibrate exactly to your stride. There are plenty of reviews, similar experiences noted if you Google the FR 50 reviews.

I agree regarding the e-bay suggestion. That's where I got mine and it's been great.

Good luck!

Calibration is easy as long as you don't act like a typical male and try to do it without reading the instructions!

It was very simple if I had just followed the instructions the first time!

Things are going well. Pretty sure I will be able to hit our challenge numbers, although I may have to adjust some more aggressive targets I set prior to our challenge. Trying to get strength time in addition to swim, bike and run is challenging for me with work and family but....so is life! Having fun, staying healthy and loosing weight are all going well.

When it comes to the run training you do - how much do you vary your workouts. e.g. tempo runs, hills, etc. Or do you just run for different lengths of time. I have to say that in the past I have had more variety to my swim and bike workouts compared to running.

Is everyone else doing well? We have about half the group active and I can't tell if the other half could use any help, motivation or whatever. :-)

The challenge so far has been really great! I don't think that I will have any issue completing the goals.

I feel a little silly for asking, but what exactly would be some good small goals to consider when doing a challenge like this? I have increased the distances somewhat and I have been trying to improve on the number of days that I swim but I would be interested to hear if anyone else is doing something different?

I do like the idea of getting more variety in my swim-bike-run workouts. Any advice on how to do that would be appreciated.

Kristin
