Got in a good 750 yard swim today.  Starting an Intermediate olympic 18 week plan on Monday for race in Sept.  Should I experience any issues with the half dozen or so sprint races I will be doing up until the Olympic race?  I've altered the plan a little to allow for some rest time prior to and immediately after each sprint race.

Adam, I think you'll be perfect.  I LOVE racing vs. simply training.  Your Oly in Sept. will be smokin'.  Good Luck.

I would use the sprints as just part of your traing and not really do anything different - maybe a lighter workout before/after - but no drastic taper.

Hey - I'm having a big sale this weekend if anyone is interested....www.steadystatesports.com....20% off everything, coupon code - MAYDAY. I won't mention it again as I don't want this to be a "mentor" group that gets pinged with sales offers.

I'm heading up to Lake Placid this weekend for 2 loops of the bike course + run. Can't wait!!!!!!!

Hey Adam - where are you located?  I'm thinking of doing an oly in September too.  I'm hoping I can find one towards the beginning of Sept.  I have my first 1/2 marathon on 9/20 (Philly distance run).

I was going to recommend to you the Finger Lakes Triathlon but I just looked it up and it is the same day as your half.

Got my swim in today but couldn't get my planned bike at lunch.  We are having to do a lot of prep stuff at work in case this swine flu thing gets worse.  Pretty crazy what a big deal this has become in such a short time.

I feel so bad I haven't posted all week. Life has been hectic.

Matt - congrats on breaking on the new shoes

Margot - congrats on the race

As for my story of the week - I actually made 3 morning workouts this week (4 if you count sunday). That is a first for me. I think the most I ever did before was 2. Normally I only do morning workouts to get 2 workouts in for that day. However due to my schedule I got no night time workouts in. Atleast I pushed myself to get morning workouts in.

Today I woke up and I felt completely exhausted. Not my body but my mind. I feel like crashing on my bed but I am stuck at work. And I am supposed to stay an hour or two later today at work. It'll be a long day. On the upside I have done so many hours in the past 2 weeks that I'll be on overtime pay.

Tomorrow I have my second outdoor group ride with my triathlon club. Although I am looking forward to it, it is going to be chilly for cycling ( single digits in Celsius). But who am I kidding, as long as there is a practise and I don't have anything else to do I'll be there.

I had a good weekend. Not ready for it to end.

Yesterday I went on a bike ride with my triathlon group. Although I felt like I got jibt since I didn't start at the first pickup stop - I started at the 2nd as it was closer to my house. I only did 26km while people who started from the beginning did 55km. when my ride was over with I was still wanting to ride. Next time I am going to bike to the starting area if I can. It would have taken me 40-45 minutes to bike to this start area.

since yesterday I felt like I didn't workout enough I went on another bike ride today with 2 friends. we had a bit of an adventure even before we started our ride. One friend forgot her helmet so we had to wait for her to drive home and come back with it. Not a problem. While we are waiting for her my friends bike falls over we start hearing a hissing sound. She now has a flat tire. the spare tire she has with her is for her other bike. Luckily I have the same tire as her so I gave her my spare. Now we have to change the tire which neither of us is good at. We manged to get the tire off change it but couldn't get the tire back on. I then spot a friend of mine from St john ambulance who is out for a ride. I called him over and he fixed the remainder of the tire for us. He rode with us through most of our route but I now owe him a coffee. We finally started our ride around 11:15 only an hour behind schedule.

After the ride I went for a 5km run. I was going to go longer but I was already expected to be done my workout by the time I started my run and I didn't want to forgo it. My legs felt ok during the run but not fresh. Atleast they weren't lead.

Tomorrow I was going to take it a little easy however a friend wants to do an outdoor run. since the weather after Wednesday is questionable I am going for the run. I want to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible.

how was everyone else's weekend?

No, not really.  Not a bad weekend, just not a good one.  I worked my part time job all day on Saturday and had two communion parties afterwards.  One sucked, one was okay.  Today was a total wash out.  I was planning a 2 - 3 hour bike ride, but it was cold and raining - I don't mind riding in the rain, but not when it's cold - and I could only stand 1:10 on my trainer.  Good news is that I did some intervals of high gear/high resistance, so I do feel like I got a good workout in, even if it was inside.

Pretty good here.  Got a 25 mile ride in on Saturday.  I borrowed a friends road bike and what a difference that made over my cheap mountain bike!!  Madd for a much easier ride and my legs barley felt tired after the ride even though I average 2 mph faster than my mtn bike rides.  Today ws a 10 mile run.  Great day for it.  Mostly cloudy, warm but not hot.  This weekend had my biggest bike ride this year and longest run ever!

My first official tri is in 4 weeks so I am really getting excited.

George- great job on the new distance!  (Hit the foam roller if your IT band is tight).  Scout---you'll bounce back!  Mel- you continue to amaze...extra workouts even when your body is cashed...wow!

I did my first ride out in the hilly burbs' today.  It was a group ride (4 guys, 2 girls) and it was fun.  I wish I would have spent more time doing intervals versus spinning for "saddle time" on the trainier this year; especially with the hilliest triathlon in the area coming up in 13 days! But it was beautiful out...perfect weather.  I had to install the bracket for my aerobottle yesterday and had a little fun thinking about nutrition/etc again.  Unfortunatly, had some mechanical issues on the bike (small ring just was chucking along and looked like the chain was going to drop)...but the mechanical issues did not outweigh the early season fatigue issues.  Oh well...looking forward to hitting it again next saturday!

Saturday was an easy 9mile run.  I was going to do 10, but I was with a friend....and excited to have company.  We had a good chat and enjoyed the sunshine.

Toying with riding outside Wednesday morning before work for 30 minutes  Wednesday evening the reps from Infinite are coming to the tri club meeting...so I want to be there.  Must get out of bed)

Bouncing back I am!  I just printed a new swim workout from swimplan.com...my longest to date - 3200 yards that I'll be tackling tomorrow morning.  I'm also planning another ride at lunch time tomorrow.  I'll be outside if the temp climbs above 60 - it's supposed to rain all day again tomorrow.  Yuck.

I managed to get a nice ride in on Saturday.  I did a few sprints around the state park before I headed out to the more hillier areas around the lake but I felt strong the entire ride.  I also managed to ride during the 2 hour block of overcast skies we had on an otherwise beautiful sunny day.  I hit the gym for a quick swim before company arrived to make sure I put some pool time in for the week.

I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to get my planned run in on Sunday, especially with the half marathon approaching. The day was simply too hectic.  By the time I had enough free time to run, I was burnt.  I'm extremely concerned about the potential effect of this on my half marathon performance but I'm trying to put it out of my mind for now as I don't see the good in dwelling on it.

Did Total Immersion swim clinic over the weekend.  Ended up being a very small group so I had alot of individual instruction.  Good clinic and I feel like I will be a better/more efficient swimmer as a result.  Really focus on getting balance in the water.  Saw some improvement in before and after videos.  Instructor gave me 3-4 things to really focus on with my stroke so I will do mostly drills over the next 2 weeks to try to improve.  I liked it and seeing video of yourself swimming from both above and underwater is very enlightening (humbling, discouraging...).  Did look better in videos done at the end.  Went from stroke count of 19 for 25meters at the beginning of class to 13/14 at the end of the class.

One of the big things I didnt realize I was doing was my stroke was crossing in front of me rather than more to the front and side.  Think about it more like climbing a ladder with hands on outside of the ladder rather than climbing a rope-that may oversimplify it but it is a visual I can understand.

I still have a long way to go but I could quickly identify a couple of stroke problems with 2 swimmers (not in the class) that were doing laps as I finished the class-not to say I am a better swimmer than either but now I at least know what I should be doing.  Will really focus on 25 drill/25 swim repetitions over the next 2 weeks and then more on swimming as first tri approaches on 5/30.

Itching to get a tri specific bike before my first race. Currently riding a Specialized Allez Sport/105 road bike with clip on aeorbars.  Looked at a 2008 Cervelo P2c ultegra at local shop and I have serious bike lust.
