Just an FYI.  I rode the half and full loops today and was surprised to find that on the full loop, Thompson Road had recently had a new layer of chip seal put down.  It looked real fresh so I'm guessing the last day or two since I saw them on another road nearby.  Thompson road is not rideable at this point and I have to imagine it at least a few weeks before the loose rock will be out of the way to be even close to safe to ride.  It's not a real well traveled road so it will take time.

Oooh, thanks. You might want to send a note to the race director - [email protected]
He would want to know.

Sent an email to Todd Gollnick yesterday and he responded to it today and was unaware of it and was going to be looking into the matter.

Are they associated with the Cleveland Tri Club that is doing the training day?  I didn't send anything to the club.

Biked the whole IM course today.  Thompson road is still a mess with loose stone, and now there are a couple other roads that have been chip sealed.  About 1/2 mile of Frailey road and about a mile of Main road.  So thank you Erie county for making this even more challenging.

I saw them chip sealing Joppa on Tuesday and was wondering if they were going to hit Frailey next.  Did you actually ride on the affected roads today?

I'm kinda of shocked that in the setting up the race that something wasn't done between the Rev3 and the local counties and road work as I'm sure they had to get some approvals before this thing was allowed to happen.  At least  there seem to be plenty of roads in the area they can do reroutes on if needed.

No wonder Ohio has such nice riding roads they actually take care of them before they look like they've been carpet bombed, I think that's the determining factor in Michigan.

The only road I didn't ride was Thompson.  To be honest, the first 10 miles and the last times miles are ridiculous.  Going through Huron is rough, and even the Chausse out to Cedar Point is kinda bumpy.  But atleast that isn't chip sealed.

The roads they chip sealed were rough, but they weren't that bad.  Now it's just a crash waiting to happen.

Chip seal just means I have to modify my time expectations way down. Nothing like a good chipped seal road to take me down several mphs. For me, it's worse than wind. Dammit.

The edges of the Chausee are bit rough, but nothing to worry about.  Huron High School, Jim Campbell drive is being taken care of, or that is what I was told.  i am riding 1 loop on Wedenday, if any one wants to join in.  Probly start around 3 or so from Sawmill.  I have not seen Thompson or Frailey, I need to see them to believe it.  They were not in bad shape.

Just got a message from Rev3, they are aware and working on it.  There is more chip seal to come.  Yikes!

ahohl - 2010-08-02 2:25 PM I'm headed up for the training day in August!

Rev3 just sent out a discount code, in case you have some friends whose arms you are trying to twist....

Care to share. Still procrastinating and deciding if I want to do the HIM race. Maybe a nice code to offset the Active fees would help

As it stands right now, all of the roads are scheduled to be done by August 29th!  It looks like it is going to mess with some of the training rides, but should make for great riding during the race!  We are looking at some alternate routes should the chip sealing not be done in time.

No offense, even if they chip seal by the 29 of aug, those roads are gonna be very rough come race day. The roads aren't that well travelled by vehicles, so it won't set as nicely as other roads. Sad thing is, those roads weren't that bad to begin with. Make sure you have extra tubes and CO2 race day.

The paving company that is doing it has been very helpful!  We will be running street sweepers through all of the streets to make sure they are top notch come race day!  We are also planning some alternate routes just in case they arent in good shape.  There are some other good options in Erie County, so either way you look at it, the ride will be great!

Does anyone know if mp3's or iPods will be allowed on the run?  The reason I ask is that I just did Steelhead and they didn't allow them at all.  I didn't see any mention in the rules on the run  page or in the FAQ so I'm hoping it'll be ok.

They are against USAT rules, so my guess is they won't be allowed.

I ordered some of the Cerasport drink and tried it for the first time on Saturday's long ride.  It's VERY sweet, has a weird texture, and was hard to get down even early in the ride.  Maybe diluted from the suggested mixture it wouldn't be so bad.  If you haven't tried it, I would say order some and make sure you can stomach it or plan to carry your own bottles for the race.

Cera Sport is too expensive for me so I have been training without it and plan to just carry my nutrition for both the bike and the run. I have never been a big fan of fuel belts but in my last marathon I lived off the course and had some GI issues from whatever drink they were giving us.

I plan to carry my own as well. Normally I just do whatever is on the course but never tried Cera sport and haven't trained w/ it either.

I've never done an IM, so are spectators allowed to jog with competitors at the end like occasionally happens in marathons?

That would be a "no".  This is from their website on the Run Course page:

"This is an individual event. No individual support vehicles or not-contestant escort runners are allowed. Teamwork as a result of outside assistance that provides an advantage over single competitors is not allowed. Ample aid and food stations will be provided. Individual support vehicles or non-contestant escort runners will result in disqualification. A non-contestant escort runner includes contestants who have withdrawn from the race, have been disqualified or have finished the race. Friends, family members, coaches, or supporters of any type may not bike, drive, or run alongside contestant, may not pass food or other items to contestant and should be warned to stay completely clear of all contestants to avoid disqualification. It is incumbent upon each contestant to reject immediately any attempt to assist, follow or escort. "

I really don't mind the CeraSport.
I ordered some a couple months back - the sampler pack - and have taken it on most of my long rides.
It doesn't mix great, but other than that, it's a lot like Accelerade.

I have purposely tried to train with some stuff I really hate - working on the Ironstomach thing, you know?
I wouldn't drink it for fun, but I had no GI problems with it.

The logistics and weight of hauling all my own stuff around seems like something I don't want to get into.

Have fun if you are up there for training day today!
I have to skip this one. I had a bike crash and had to change my plan around.

Hope it's a great day!

Just got back from riding the course.  The Cleveland Tri Club did a great job putting this on and the Rev3 people out there were awesome.  This is going to be a great race.

As for the bike course, its definitely going to be challenging.  That chip seal really slowed me down, especially in the areas of the false flats.  There were a few times where my bike felt so  sluggish that I looked  down to see if I'd lost air pressure.  For the most part, those roads don't seem that heavily traveled so I don't expect the conditions to get much better, but who knows.  One thing I found that helped somewhat was to try to ride in the car tire tracks - maybe 3 more weeks of cars will get those tracks a little smoother too.  Its going to be interesting  trying  to pace myself for this race - I'll need to try to go fairly fast in the smooth areas to compensate for the rough stuff.  The hills didn't seem bad at all - nice gentle rollers and nothing really big, at least compared to what I'm used to around here.  Wind today was minimal and there seemed to be enough crops and trees along the road that it should help keep cross winds down - at least there weren't many huge open fields.

As for the Cerasport, they were out there today giving away samples.  I actually liked it - its not very sweet and  even in the double strength that they were mixing it,  it didn't have an overpowering flavor.

I rode the course last week and yesterday.  The improvement in the chip seal roads is enormous in just one week.  I think that 3 weeks from now, they will be great.

Rev3 did tell us yesterday, the finish line will be inside Cedar Point.  There will be no charge to get in to the park to see the finish line.  After 8, the park is closed and the area where fans can go will expand.  You will need to pay for parking.

The swim is going to be a split swim.  You will swim from Breakers beach out and over then run on the beach and get back in and swim the half swim course.  The swim start will be a mass start for the full with everyone, other than the pros, going off from the beach at 7:00.
