I might be driving down from Wilmington NC. I am still looking for a place to stay. They have room in Disney Rockand Roll Hotel for $82 but I can`t see myself having a whole room to myself with two king beds. So still wondering if I should stay inside or outside disney

I am doing the Disney 70.3.  I live 20 mintues and the bike course runs near my house.  If you have any questions about the course or hotels I can either answer or get someone who lives here as well to answer any of your questions.  Looking foward to the event!

I live here and could coordinate something.  I actually will be up in Raleigh on the 15th of May watching my daughter graduate from NC state.  I could possibly set something up on Wednesday night or Thursday night depending on my travel.  There are some nice places that actually have rooms they could put the BT athletes in if we are interested.  I have hosted several business type dinners at a couple of these.

Let me know:
What is the best day to host?

Reply and let me know if you want to come

I can throw out some suggestions on where and price range

I will then have them reserve a spot for us.

I'm pretty new here on BT but I wanted to jump in and introduce myself since I'll (hopefully) be seeing a lot of you at Disney in May.  Last year was my first full season and I decided to do one of everything and I've decided that I like 70.3's the most by far.  I raced the 70.3 Rhode Island (waaaay too hilly for a clydesdale like me) and finished in 5:29 on a few months of basic, triathlon two-a-day training.  With a better aerobic base and much more specific training year I'm hoping to go sub 5 and *maybe* get lucky at roll down. Fingers crossed there.

I'll be flying in and taking the free bus from the airport to Disney. I would LOVE to stay at Fort Wilderness because it's so close to the race site, but WOW it's expensive.  The cabins do sleep 6 people though, so if anyone wants to share a cabin and cut down on the cost, I would love you forever.  Well, that's not true, but if you pass on that Clearwater spot so I can have it...then we're talking.

Anybody?

I'm planning on arriving Friday and leaving Monday. For those three nights, the cost for 1 cabin is $1131 (regardless of the number of people in it), including tax. Here's what it would cost per night/total for each person.

If there are:

2 people - $188.50/night, or $565.50 total
3 people - $125.67/night, or $377 total
4 people - $94.25/night, or $282.75 total
5 people - $75.40/night, or $226.20 total
6 people - $62.83/night, or $188.50 total.

I don't know if 5 or 6 people is really feasible though just because these cabins don't look super spacious and triathletes tend to bring/have a lot of stuff. Check it out for yourself:

http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/hotels/?sortBy=nG:hasResortCategoryFacet&fv_78119=on

But I'm open to anything right now and if there are at least 3 other people who want to do this I'm ready to pay and book a room today.

BamaDC - I'm racing M18-24.

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread -Bike Transport
This will be my first 1/2 IM. I'm wondering how other out-of-towners typically ship/transport your bikes? I'm leaning towards the tritransport and just biting the bullet on the cost in exchange for the ease. Does anyone have experience with using this company? I don't want to deal with the airlines and getting a bike box.

Any thought/tips are appreciated!

I plan to go down  thursday and stay to monday.  I already reserved at the hotel nearest transition.

I have always brought my bike with me.  I know lots of people who have used tribiketransport and were happy  - I just don't want to be without my bike that long - and it only takes me about 15 minutes to build or break down my bike.

plus ironman usually has a coupon to get the bike fee waived - though I have not tried that yet my other destination races were not branded.

As to BT gathering either friday or saturday - since we have to rack the day before an early dinner saturday might not be a bad plan but friday night could be fun too...

Hey all,
Sorry I haven't gone through the whole thread to see if any one has asked, but when does the race usually fill up? I won't know if I can get the time off until March, will there still be openings?

Howdy,  2 of us from AZ planning on coming out for the race. It will be our first half IM, and we're looking forward to it.  Probably staying at a hotel nearby the downtown disney area- Hilton Garen Inn or the Park Soleil...  but still researching options, so if anyone has suggestions we'd love to hear them.  We're probably just going to fly the bikes on Southwest- they're relatively reasonable on the cost and the less time apart, the better!

Good to see this thread getting active!!!!  I think a Saturday early dinner sounds great.  You know, drop off the bike and then do a little shopping and then hit someplace for dinner.  I do not know the Disney area that well so I think we should assign someone the task of scoping out a place to eat.  I don't know about others but I will have my family with me and I will try and talk them into kicking back at the condo while we meet and eat!!!

I would like to get to meet some people so I will have others to root on.....

Anyone doing IMWI as well?  Just curious if I may get to someone twice

Mountainsun - I sent my bike through TriBikeTransport last year and felt like it was totally worth the money.  One of the big advantages is that they are right at transition so you pick it up right there and when the race is over you can drop it off instead of having to ride it back to the parking lot (which is not a short trip, remember this is Disney). This was a HUGE advantage for me since getting back on that bike after 56 miles was not my idea of a post race celebration.  You have to remove your pedals (or have your bike shop remove them) but the TriBike guys will put them back on for you.  Plus you can send a gear bag for $25 or $30.  Delta charges that much to check luggage.  The disadvantage is that you have to kiss your bike good by more than a week before the race, but I just figured that into my taper and did some short rides on my mountain bike.

As a participant last year, this was the best thing I did for the race.  I second everything she said.  I will do TBT anytime it's available.

P.S - Hey Suzanne and Fred.

I'm racing! Coming down from New York City This is a tune-up race for IM Coeur d'Alene. I'm a little worried about the race but hey, what's a 70.3 without a little anxiety??

Any opinions on accommodations? I think I'm going to book Saturday & Sunday night at the Dolphin using Starwood points. What are people's experiences driving to the race on race morning, transportation, etc. I'll have a car and my mom will be staying with me and wants to watch.

Right now it looks like I'll be flying with my bike since TriBikeTransport will have my bike for too long and I need it to train for CDA....

In 2008,2009 I stayed at the Comfort Suites Maingate West (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g34352-d84699-Reviews-Comfort_Suites_Maingate-Kissimmee_Florida.html)
off 192.
The rooms are big w/high speed internet, big pool to do laps in the morning, Theres a Carrabbas right out the front door, a Winn Dixie Market place in the plaza the hotel is attached to, an Outback, Fridays and a GREAT Shusi place.
Its a 10min drive to the Disney parking lot and is right off the bike route.
Race morning, I left the hotel @ 4:30 and was at my bike in transision at 4:55.
Rooms are around $70-$90 a night and the place is quite, like no one knows about it.
Guppie, Erinmac, my wife and I all met for dinner at Carrabbas the night before the race.
Enjoy,

I'm sick with a respiratory infection and now I'm worried about my training.  Will losing a week of training make a huge impact?  At what point does it become critical and I probably should think about not doing the race because of lack of training?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Cube! That place sounds like a great deal. I ended up booking the Dolphin because I was able to take advantage of some Starwood points and get a pretty good deal. I'm sharing with my mom so making her pay half too! What is the parking lot you're talking about?

As for the last entry about missing a week of training right now, I don't think that should impact your race that is in May. Do you have a strong base already? Ever done a race like this before? You should have plenty of time to recover from a week off at this point in the game. At least that's my opinion. You have a solid 3 months of training left and then another month which will include your taper.

You have to park in the dopey or grumpy parking lots at Disney and take shuttle buses over to Fort Wilderness. Theres NO PARKING @ Ft. Wilderness.
You can either ride your bike over for bike check-in on sat or stick it under a bus (not reccomended). Its about a mile ride over from the lot.
Also you have to ride your bike back to your car after the race on sunday, in the sun and heat..lol
If as ALL possible, do your check-in on Friday!!! Saturday is a nightmare as everyone is trying to p/u packest, put #'s on bike, check-in bikes, deal with family, then try to find a place to eat and get to sleep before 9pm.
I drove over and checked in bike @ 11am sat and was chillin @ the hotel pool (in the shade) by 12:30, laughing about all the crazyness at Ironman check-in.
Carrabbas opens @ 4:30 on Sat, we ate and were back in the room by 7pm.
Also, room have frig, coffe and mircowaves.
