newbz - 2010-02-10 3:16 PM we now have so much snow that the freeways have just been closed. my guess is there will be no training in my day today

I'll quit complaining about the amount of snow we have here then - Sorry Newbz - that BLOWS! I just called the Y and they are planning on staying open until regular time (yay!) which means I should be able to get a swim and bike in later.

Newbz, where are you located?  I am in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  It has been snowing here hard all afternoon.  Highways are still open though.

I'm slightly worried about my bike.  I really should get my bike out of the basement and on to the trainer. :/

I predict I will be pale, have a crappy bike times and not walk on the run this year

newbz - 2010-02-07 2:51 PM the bike course really has two hills to note, one at about mile 3, one a bit later. the rest are nothing to worry about. the run course is about as flat as you will get. i think the total elevation change from highest to lowest point on it is about 4 feet.

Last year I chickened out and walked the bike up the hills.  After that I discovered the joys of bike shoes and clips, but my memories of those hills are colored by first race terror.  I'm sure they didn't really have snow at the top and we probably weren't riding straight up a cliff...  So, I'm looking for a way to figure out grade so I can find some equivalent hills around here to train on.  My goal is to ride up the hills this year, without falling over sideways when I run out of gears.

Cheryl, send me a PM and let's get together and find some hills. If you're willing to travel about a half an hour east, we've got a few over here that just might be comparable.

It, in fact, does not. Too cold in the morning last year.

I am a new triathlete and this is going to be my first race. Along with having no experience, I have no triathlon gear. I was wondering what you would suggest for this race? (In reference to gear and temperature) I am planning on getting tri shorts in the near future but beyond that I'm not sure about biking jersey's, tri shirts, etc.. I am planning on doing longer distance tri's in the summer so I would like to purchase gear I could use for both. Also, if you have any preferred brands let me know. Thanks.

Dan

Well, I am out. this will be the first time in four years I have not done the MUSF tri. I recently got a job as a fitness instructor at the Y. I'm only teaching one class a week, but my boss likes me and I like the job so the are paying for me to get SPIN certified. Unfortunately, the first day of classes is the same day as this race. The next time they are sending people to this class is September 12. My wife is racing the Rev 3 that day, so that's out.

After withdrawling from this race I have no races on the calander for the year. So, good luck everyone! I'm sorry I won't be there but I'll try again for next year. For you newbies, it's a fun one. For you vets, enjoy the day. For newbz, watch out for thorns on the bike course.

Seriously bumming, now who is going to keep the cooler of our post-race rehydration drinks locked up and safe?!?!?! That's great news about the job at the Y congrats.

Dave will have to take that job. Or Tom. The empty bottles will give him something else not to pee in.

I didn't really mean to get a job at the Y. It happened on accident.

FYI, I wrote HFP this morning telling them I had to pull out of the Miami tri and asked for a transfer. I just got an email back saying that it would be not problem and to let them know what race I wanted to do. As much griping as some of us have done about HFP (myself included) I just wanted everyone to know that in this instance HFP customer service has been great. Thanks HFP!

Look for some good stuff from HFP this year, last year was a big transition as they shifted back to shannon running things, this year it looks as if everything is set and ready to go.

Should be a good time.

so we're only a few weeks out, how are things look?

As of right now swimming is a bit behind last year, other two look good.
I'm going to be training right through miami this year, no taper or rest before habd.

I have two big races for me (little smokies half IM and two weeks later rockman half IM) that i need to do well in, so i am going to let the miami sprint go to the back burner in an effort to squeeze some more training in there.

Starting this week training will ramp up from 10-12 hours a week and build over the next few weeks to just under 20 hours in a 6 week build before a short taper into little smokies.

oh yeah - less than a month to go until I get to unveil my pasty white frame at the grand natatorium in Oxford, Ohio. Has anyone had success in finding tri shorts of colors other than black for less than 100$? Black doesnt complement my white skin as well
