Veteran 274 | Subject: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread Well I just registered for this race. I really was not planning on doing this race, buy my cousin registered for this race to be his first Triathlon ever. So instead of just watching him race I registered also. I just hope to I can execute the run much better then last year!!! Anyone else excited to hit these big hills again? |

Master 1887 Loveland, Ohio | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread Oh, my gosh. Didn't we just end this thread from '09 a few weeks ago? This race was weird for me. I brought things to wear in case it was cold and in case it wasn't. It was both. The swim was good, the hills on the bike were a nightmare and the run was perfect. The campus was absolutely beautiful. I picked this one last year because, having come off my first season, I couldn't wait to do another tri. Now that I've got some more races under my belt and know some more courses, I'm less excited about this one. Though, who knows? I may sign up at the last minute. I actually don't have anything on my schedule until Deer Creek and by the time March and April roll around, I may be itching to race. Afterall, that hill on the bike course wasn't REALLY that bad. |

It's really not. you can get most of the way up the hill with momentum from the down hill before it. Truly you can! |

Delaware, OH | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread No....that hill *was* really that bad! When you are driving the course and then all you see out of your car's windshield is SKY...you know you will be in for some pain. I'll be there with bells on! |

Veteran 303 Columbus, Ohio | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread I'm in. Just signed up last week. Can't wait to see if I think the hills were as bad as I thought they were last year. I remember seeing A LOT of people walking up one of the hills. Pride (stupidity) wouldn't let me dismount and follow suit. I couldn't help but laugh as some of the people I passed while they were walking up the hill passed me as I got to the top and could barely pedal due to blowing my legs out to get to the top. It was kind of funny. |

Extreme Veteran 442 Ohio | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread So I am a newbie, like a super newbie - I have never done a triathlon before (I just did my first biathlon [swim/run] and really enjoyed it) and I have been toying with the idea of doing the Miami Tri as my first Tri but the talk of all of these gnarly hills on the bike portion are kind of intimidating. It's nice to know Keith-OG that this is your cousin's first Tri so I wouldn't be the only one there that has never done a Tri before and it is nice to see that there are other people from BT that seem to be more seasoned that will be there as well. I still haven't signed up yet - I need to find a bike - I am keeping my eye on Craig's List but don't really have any idea what I am looking for so any suggestions would be welcomed. In any event, I am pretty comfortable with the swim and run already so I just need to work on the biking piece and apparently that will include some hill work based on what you all are saying. |

Delaware, OH | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread Oh gosh! I didn't mean to scare you off! Miami was my first outdoor tri. For what it's worth the swim is fun (but slightly clogged if you are a good swimmer and stuck behind sir-doing-breaststroke-in-the-first-200yds) the transition is RIGHT THERE by the pool, the bike is well....walking up those hills is ok. I think I walked up 2 of them. The run is nice and flat and the finish line...well there is nothing sweeter than the sight of your first finish line. You'll never forget it. As I remember my race report is pretty amusing. |

Master 2014 Ohio | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread Geesh, you people. Scaring off the newbie's like that! For Shame! (diamond, the red font with italics indicats sarcasm here on BT.) I told you all the hills weren't that bad. By all means do Miami as your first. It was my first tri a few years back. Alot of students do the race, so there will be many first timers there. Also, don't go out an buy a fancy new bike. Get something used off craigs list or borrow one. A mountian bike is just fine. If you're unsure, go and read some race reports from years past. look under k's post or mine and click the box where it says "races." I'll take you to a screen where you can see all the race reports one user has written. Pick the Miami Tri from the list and you're on your way. I look forward to seeing you there! |

Extreme Veteran 442 Ohio | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread Alright, alright you all have convinced me. I am really looking forward to it - now I just have to find a bike. I have a question for you all - I read somewhere something about aging up for USAT - so here's the question that I have, do they go by your real age in a given month or do they count you as the age you will turn that year? In other words, the race is in April but my birthday is not until September so will they count me as the age I am in April or as the age I will turn in September. Also, I am thinkng about registering for a USAT membership since each of the the Splash N Dashes I am doing (3 total) will require me to buy a one day membership and I am assuming that the Miami Tri will also require this so it would be worth it to just buy the year membership since I will end up shelling out at least $40 in one day membership fees right? Smiles, DJ PS. Thanks for the tips on the race reports they were helpful and K your race report was pretty amusing |

Master 2014 Ohio | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread The age you be December 31st of the current year is your USAT age. I am 32. My b-day is in June when I will turn 33. But this race is in April. As far as USAT is concerned I am 33 for the April race. Also, if you are planning 4 races then go ahead and get your USAT membership. At $40 it pays for itself in 4 races. How knows, you may want to add a fifth race in later this year. Then you'll be ahead of the game! You also get a magazine with the membership. |

Extreme Veteran 442 Ohio | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread Thanks for the explanation David. The only problem with USAT doing it this way means that this is my last year in the minor leagues before aging up to the major leagues (all you folks in the 30-34 age group are animals). At least I can get one year in the 25-29 age group before joining the ranks of the 30-34 group |

At least I can get one year in the 25-29 age group before joining the ranks of the 30-34 group not getting a membership may not change the age group you are placed in. One of my friends (real age 39) did a race last year as a non member and dang it if the race organization went with calendar age rather than real age thus putting me second in AG behind him. if your gonna do 3 or more races get a membership besides the 10 per race fee it also provides a magazine and annual rankings. Expert 769 Alpharetta (until we find a home) | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread Well my race season has begun as I have plunked down the credit card and registered for this race and the Deer Creek OLY. I like how they arent using active anymore but they ask for an estimate of how long it will take me to finish both for this race and the Deer Creek. I know they used 400 M swim times as the basis for the starting positions but the total time estimate is something new. |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: Miami University Student Foundation Triathlon : Official Thread you dont need the total overall (you can leave blank i think) It was installed for seeding for the TTT so they could get starting orders down a bit more, but i think you can use it for all their races now. |
