So he's in for the race. Most likely I will be jock straping. I am still on fence since I really want to do IM AZ next year. And the thought of starting back to IM train isn't all that appealing to me- I need a longer break. I'm enjoying marathon training right now and want to work on my running for awhile. Nothing wrong with that -- you have a lot of months till CdA 2011. I'm doing the same thing right now (except the enjoying it part) because running is my weak area. Agreed (about having more months before CDA training starts)!! Training for a fall mary myself (Portland 10/10/10). Oh dear, I've now posted twice in this thread. I'm going to have to enter or shut up and crawl away with my tail between my legs... Hi Kyla! I too am training for Portland with the (possibly crazy) hope to BQ. P.S. CDA is calling your name |

Sweet, welcome to the party. You rocked LP this year and are a testament to consistent training and cashing it in on race day. |

Elite 2998 Fishers, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread What's up crew! Glad to see we've grown! I've been absent as I made my cross country move to BEAUTIFUL San Diego!! I also picked up a new ride-- a 2010 Felt B2R -- it is SWEET. And I can already tell you there are plenty of hills around here for me to practice! No going far to search for them! I know some of y'all had talked about what your HIM would be--I'll be at Oceanside 70.3 due it's, now, close proximity. I cannot think of a better place to train through the winter than here. I'm LOVING IT! |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Got a question for everyone. So I have been searching out 1/2 IM's prior to CDA and I found a flat and fast half on the other side of Michigan but it is June 6. It would be 3 weekends before CDA. I have been looking at different plans and have seen a couple that have racing a HIM 4 weeks out. Thoughts please? |

If IM CDA is your A race then I wouldn't risk an injury, a crash or something else coming in the way of a fully rested and ready to rock person. |

I don't think a HIM is needed as prep, unless you just want to do one for fun and don't think it will impact your training plan. Also keep in mind, anything earlier in the season that CdA will probably have you going somewhere south-ish. There's the M-dot race in Oceanside, CA early April... not sure what region you were looking for, though. |

I do not think that a HIM is needed prior to an IM, and 3 weeks prior seems too close to me. I would only think about doing a race this close to IM if it were a local race and I did not have to deal with the stress of traveling for it. IMO, you should save the HIM race entry money and buy an over priced IM finishers coffee mug with it when you get to CDA . |

Veteran 227 Brentwood, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I found racing IMFL70.3 two months before IMLP to have been one of the MOST valuable learnings I received. Having never raced longer than Oly prior, I had to learn pacing and nutrition. My IM 70.3 experience was miserable because I went out like I was racing an OLY and got humbled on the run. When I did IMLP I knew to back 'er down. Even though I felt I could ride 24MPH on the flats (not many of those in IMLP), I slowed down. The energy you save on mile 20 of the bike will be much appreciated on mile 20 of the run!!! There are probably non IM branded races which could save you alot of money in entry fees and travel. If you decide to go this route, don't even treat it as a C race, treat it as an organized training day with water stops. That said, 3 weeks out is wayyyyyy too close. I did it 2 months out, then used my learnings in some of my longer training sessions as the race got closer. My $.02... Edited by gremlin327 2010-08-17 10:58 AM |

I hear that a lot of people rent houses, since there are not too many hotels in the area. Would I need to make reservations now? What experiences do IMCdA veterans have with finding a place to stay? |

Veteran 227 Brentwood, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread And BTW, I know people will say "everybody knows you need to slow down in an IM" and is easy to say "I know that and I will back it down during an IM". We also all know that type A personalities like everybody on this board need a good, down to earth a$$ whooping, 65 year old women passing us on the run humble to actually learn. The learning here is not to slow down, the learning is how MUCH to slow down... Good luck! |

I've stayed at the CDA Resort (super spendy but it doesn't get much more convenient) and now I stay at the newly built Hampton Inn. Still a bit pricey but very close, huge rooms, great service, nice breakfast and if you are a frequent traveler like me you can use points to stay there |

Boo. I guess I will keep looking around. Might make a camping weekend out of it |

I think 3 weeks out is cutting it a little close, especially with all the risks involved in racing (come on, how many of us can REALLY hold back some on a race), not to mention traveling time, costs, etc. For my last IM, 3 weeks out I still had a fairly long ride and run, much more than I'd get in a HIM, but I also wasn't suddenly sucking up adrenaline. I think 5-8 weeks out is good if you want to throw one in there as a race prep, but I don't know that you HAVE to do a HIM to do an IM. That being said, I'm doing Oceanside 70.3 cause I like racing, and it's April 2nd, so it's definitely far enough out, but still a good gut check. IMHO, I think the long rides and the long runs are the most important workouts, and let's face it....56 miles and 13.1 miles aren't that "long" when training for an Ironman, especially just 3 weeks out. I wouldn't want to risk injury or bike damage--from myself or someone else--that close to IM cause then it's a nut house trying to figure out if you can make it. 6-8 weeks out you have a little fudge time. Just my 2 cents. |

I hear that a lot of people rent houses, since there are not too many hotels in the area. Would I need to make reservations now? What experiences do IMCdA veterans have with finding a place to stay? So, I've been a supporter the past two years, and each time we stayed in Post Falls (though two different locations), not bad, not too far at all, and not too expensive. I am renting a house for this next year that is downtown because I want easy access, and I want the family that comes to cheer me on to have easy access and a place to relax, get food, etc. I searched on www.vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner) and found my place that way. It's not cheap, but it's for a week, for a full vacation, and has the ease of access I wanted for all of us...and when broken down by person, isn't too bad of a deal. Some other places to check out for houses are: http://www.ironmancdarentals.com/ http://www.downtowncda.com/index.html (the 3 bedroom isn't available- I have it! ) BUT YES, if you want a house BOOK NOW! They will go fast! BTW- on my tri club website a guy posted yesterday that IMCdA is 93% full, so we're nearly booked! |

Member 319 Seattle, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread One idea for lodging if you have access to an RV is camping downtown. I just booked a site on Blackwell Island for $50ish per night. It's a mile or so from downtown, so can't get much more convenient than that! |

Master 1810 Morse Lake, Noblesville, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Let me take the other side of the spectrum of doing a 70.3 close to the 140.6. If you have properly trained for the 140.6, the 70.3 is a good solid tempo workout, and as long as you have a few weeks to rest/recover, you will likely race your 140.6 better as the result. You can practice you race nutrition, practice your transitions, etc. 3 weeks out is the last of the long weeks before taper anyways for all my athletes, so timing is perfect. I don't see any issues, save from crashing the bike. But then again, if you went out and just did a long run on that day instead of doing a 70.3, you may get hit by a bus (meteroite, alien abduction, bit by a cobra, sneezed on by a germy 7 year old) too, so maybe you shouldn't be training anyways... |
