I went ahead and reserved a sleeveless wetsuit for me..

I am still new to this. Could you explain where and how you reserved a wetsuit? I presume this is a rental? How much does this cost? And what happens if the water is warm enough and it is not wetsuit legal? Do you just lose out on the money you paid to rent?

I'm not sure where you live, but I live here in IN. We have a tri shop, Tri-N-Run, here in Lafayette that rents wetsuits. It costs $65 for the entire weekend. In Indianapolis, T3 Multisport, rents them out too.. I'm sure there are some online places too.

I've already made the decision that if the water is 76.1-80 degrees, I will wear the suit, knowing that I won't be eligible for age group prizes. (I am not that fast anyway, so this is not a concern for me). It it's over 80- then I'll suck it up and go without. So, yes, I'll lose out on that money and I'm ok with that!! The peace of mind is worth the risk.

Cube,

I'm up for a short swim/bike/run on course on Fri morning. I'm also driving up from TN on Thursday so it's possible that Sat will not be the 1st time that you pass me.

bscoles1 - 2011-06-30 5:09 PM I used the google to find that site with the prairie creek reservoir water temp. http://www.munciemultisport.com/Still showing the 77 degrees temp from this past monday. I wonder how often they update it. I don't have much experience with OWS, but I am wondering how chilly 77 degrees is, compared to a normal indoor lap pool (like the YMCA, or whatever). How chilly would it have to be before you would be DEFINITELY wearing the wetsuit? I know that the added buoyancy and speed means that some folks will use it as long as it is allowed. But leave that out of the equation. If it was just the water temp that you made your decision on, what temp would it be?

Water temp is now showing 79 degrees. It's going the wrong way. Oh well, better practice for those of us gearing up for IMKY.

If I wear a wetsuit in the 76-80 range, will I still get age group ranked in USAT? I am not concerned with a Vegas spot (even if I did get one, I woudnt take it - too pricey of a trip). I would like to have this race count in my year end rankings.

Thanks.

That's a good question, I wouldn't think so since it's really not fair for those choosing to not wear one trying to get an age group spot, but end up with a lower rating because someone with a wetsuit swam faster.  I think the lake will be over 80 degrees anyway if it is at 79 now and high 80's to low 90's forcast.

My YMCA pool is about 82-84 degrees. 77 is quite warm for OWS. I don't own a wetsuit and I've done a few OWS earlier this spring at water temps of ~72. That feels a bit chilly at the start, but really comfortable once you get moving. I'd want a wetsuit for anything under 70.

So...100+ per each swim wave and each wave in 5 minute intervals?  Ok that I'm anticipating anxiety-ridden drowning??  Enough room to swim or do I need to pop a Valum now?

Haha - this made me laugh. I did this race last year as a slow old lady in the 3rd wave. I anticipated being run over by the herds behind me but I managed to see 3 different colored wave caps pass and it was still a comfortable swim. The participant numbers are way higher than before so I expect there to be some rough spots. It's a big lake so hopefully we can all find a path safely to the beach.

I was going through the athlete's guide and it sounds like you can't have anything on the ground in transition. Am I reading this wrong? If I'm not, where do things like shoes, sunscreen, bag balm, etc. go? Is this normal?

I think I saw what you were talking about, but it looks like that is for the 'optional bike check-in' on Friday. You can leave your shoes with your bike, if they are attached, and your helmet if it is strapped on, but you can't leave all your gear there on the ground all night.

X2 yep that's totally right. On race dY you can set what you want on the ground, but for e bike check in on the previous day you can't leave all your crap laying there.

Thanks for the clarification on the transition area.  I can't believe we are 5 days away.  The last 9 months of training suddenly seem so short... Glad the weather looks good.

I feel your pain, work got crazy busy with long hours for the last 3 months and my training logs reflect it.  Swim & Bike should be fine but there is no way to cheat the run and I have a feeling it's going to be brutal.  Plan to Run/Walk 4:1 ratio from the start and see how it plays out.

For those that have done this event before or are familiar with the reservoir area where start/finish/transition is:

I am curious what, if anything, there is for spectators to do while they are waiting 3 hours for me to get back on the bike, and another 2+ hours to get back from the run. The way the course is laid out, it doesn't really seem feasible for them to see me at any point during the bike or run, other than to see me off and welcome me back (unless I am missing something. So I was hoping there would be some type of playground or something or possibly a pavilion with seating, etc.

I've got my wife, 4 kids (8yrs, 7, 2, & 1) , and 2 grandparents coming along; Just don't want them to be too bored while having to wait around for my slow butt to get across the line

I believe there is a small playground and that's about it.  They could swim or play in the beach area, but overall not a good spectator venue, unless Ironman has set some things up.

I was just there on Sunday to do a course visual and from what I saw, there is a rudimentary old bathhouse/concession stand-type structure. Plus, there was a small playground and some picnic shelters. I am telling my fan club to bring lawn chairs, maybe an umbrella for shade, and stuff to do.. books. I bet the swim area will open back up and that will be nice for anyone wanting to splash around.. I'm concerned about where the heck they're going to have all 1600 of us park and our families, etc! There is nothing around the reservoir!
