On call last night, so another long night. I worked with a trainer today at the gym to get a better feel
for the machines. He was great, he also gave me some shoulder exercises to increase my ROM for the
swimming. Long workout today. Got my run in but was on the tired side, 20 minutes, more of a run walk,
1hour and 45 minutes on strength training.

Off to the mountains tomorrow, I will try to check in during the week.

Good Training to all. I appreciate everyone, it is motivating to read all the ups and downs of getting to the goal.

Hi all, tried to post the other day but didnt work for some reason.

things have been a bit hectic here, but have m0anaged to do some training.

Managed to run of 1 1/2 mile and walked at a good pace back on Tuesday morning, found an adult swimming class at my ocal pool on wednesday night so had a lesson in front crawl which I will need for the triathlon - was excellent, good advise and a structured 1 hour of swimming.

also found out that my triathlon has been put back to september as the pool has been damaged in ad weather and will be closed in April, great in one respect as I will have more time to train, but gutted as I had myself geared up to do it in april. Should I find another one for early may???

took Teigl to her aquababies class on thursday which is almost a workout for me aswell and took her to the pool today aswell and then took the dog for a walk.

helping my mother moove house tomrrow - does moving boxes count towards strength training??

my mum is a nurse and done a lot of manual handling so we'll be sure to move them corrctly.

sorry I've not been chatty, but will try harder to find the time, but I thought it was more important to actually get out of the house than just sit here on the computer.

will try and update more often.

hope all of you are well

Hi Mav! Still here! Experiencing cabin fever this past week in iced-in Atlanta. My first week of training and already I'm off my plan, but I'm looking forward to getting back on track next week. I'm enjoying catching up on everyone's posts. I've been writing a paper for a course I'm in and my brain feels a bit drained! Hopefully will have more energy once I'm excited about my training again.

Thank you to those sending inspires- must say that I don't know how to do this- anyone???

Off to enjoy my cheat meal for the week- chicken wings and wine ( Not a great combo but two of my favourite things!)

There is a drill called "fingertip drag" that really helps with keeping high elbows. You can do a search under articles here on BT and I am sure you will find the drill. I will try and find a link to a video for you.

Cheat meals are the best!!!!

I second Mav's suggestoin on the "fingertip drag" - I did that in a Master's class and it is great. I found a video of it on GoSwim.tv - I love this site by the way. http://www.goswim.tv/entries/5058/freestyle---fingertip-drag.html

I am doing pretty good with keeping my elbow up, but I think I need to find drills for making sure my pull under the water is efficient and strong.

egads!

My cousin destroyed his leg skiing (25 years ago), but he's fine now, so if he does what he's supposed to, he should recover.  Send along the good wishes of a random internet friend!  :~)

I made 75% of the water challenge yesterday, and I'm 25% of the way there today...

My daughter has softball winter workout today from 12:30-3:30, so I'm off to the gym...  I'm going to try to do the whole tri - 1.4mi run, 4mi bike, 250yd swim.

tomorrow and tuesday are rest days...  I'm going to take full advantage of them!

blue skies!

Hello Group!

Thanks, Marianne, for the updated group list. That makes it easy to check each other's daily logs.

I'm a big fan of the daily log, although I have taken the last few months off of logging. Generally, I have logged all of my workouts on this site since 2008. It's been really helpful to go back through my logs to look for volume trends. I've used the data when I go to doctors about injuries or when I start working with a new coach and they want to know what level of activity I've been at. Great tool!

This week I am trying to get a better plan together for my training this spring. I plan to do an Olympic in late June, but I need to find some other races before then to keep some incremental goals. I'm working on figuring out how to get longer workouts in , since many of mine lately have only been 30 minutes per day.

Today's plan is tune up for the bike, shop for computer with cadence monitor, Pilates, run 45 min.

one of my concerns has been alleviated:

I didn't know if I would be able to finish the shorty-tri.

since I was pretty close on the run, I thought, "I'm going to go the distance..."

so I did:
1.4 miles treadmill
4 miles spin bike
250 yards swim.

goal accomplished...   now I can go into the tri knowing that while I may be last, I *will* finish.

w00t!

guess who deserves a beer?

Marcy...I couldnt agree more on keeping logs. I have been doing it for two years and its a great  refrence point to go back and see how you have done, what impacted training and what you can do differently. I also laugh at some of the things I have written. It brings me joy to see how far I have come, as it used to be hard for me to run 3 miles

One Faller...HUGE CONGRATS!!!!!!! You can do it I have no doubt!!! My favorite recovery beverage is beer

My sons Xrays were negative...thank God...he has to see the ortho tomorrow to check his achilles. The really hard part is getting him to rest. He is insists on going to work tomorrow and his job is VERY physical. I told him I would try to get him an early ortho appt ( I know the MD) so hopefully I can get him to leave work. Adult children are difficult, at least when they were kids I could make them listen...sometimes.

Hello,

Thanks for keeping us in mind when we are not posting.  I have been working out, 900 yard swim yesterday, and 25 minute bike and 25 minute walk/jog the day before.  On break today - the first week is catching up with me.  Will update log tomorrow (keeping written log too).  I look forward to the routine and encouragement of reading and posting with this group more frequently.

Much Appreciation,

Spent yesterday sledding and skating with the kids.
I am off to a two day meeting so won't be checking in. Thankfully the hotel has a great looking pool and gym so I should be able to get two workouts in.

Does anyone else use foam rolling at the end of the workouts? I highly recommend- has really helped keep some of the kinks and aches out of my hamstrings and hip flexors.

Roll, roll roll away...its the greatest invention ever!!! Sometimes after a long workout, I sit in the hot tub and use my roller.

Good to see you are here Lori

I love the foam roller! I use it for IT bands immediately after any bike or run. It also feels great on the upper back. (Lower back not recommended)

mav - 2011-01-14 5:34 AM Hi All!!!

Michelle...what are you in school for? Training...yound child and school...WOW!!!

First off, sorry i've been out of the net the last few days...I went off to a scrapbooking weekend and the internet is not on the agenda for me when there. Well, I did look up a few bad words to teach everyone in sign language

I did slack on my water intake yesterday but other than that I have been hitting the mark!

Marianne, I am finishing up my degree in Criminal Justice. It has only taken me a gazillion years to do so but hey I'm getting there as I only have 6 classes left!

Also, how's the knee feeling?

I have a love/hate relationship with the foam roller as do most people who use it I have to agree with you on the recommendation...I notice a huge difference when I go a while without using it!

I have been out of town since Friday morning...it feels good to be home, back to training, and back to a computer.  I've been going to spinning classes every other day for 60 minutes, with my rpm's ranging from 80-115.  I started jogging/walking last week and on Thursday my shin splints came back.  I've fought them for years and they have been one of the main reasons I haven't been a 'runner'.  I do the abc's with each foot before, during, and after my runs and then ice them when I get home.  I'm not sure what else to try??  Any advice?

Morning Katie...thers no place like home

Shin splints are awful. I have had them and I certainly can empathize. After looking at your logs I would suggest you ease into running more. Run/walk every other day and only do this 3x/week. You may want to decrease your time to 20 mins per workout. ONLY increase your time if you have no pain. NEVER increase your time/distance more than 10% per week. This should help. Pain is your bodys way of saying back off....you need to listen to your body on this one. Also do you have a good pair of running shoes? If you are running on old shoes, you should go t a running store and have them fit you...they will watch you run and suggest a pair that fits your gait.

Spinning is great and shouldnt bother your shins...keep spinning until your shin pain subsides.
