the workout I did suggested strides in the middle of a 45ish minute run

Excuse my ignorance, but what are strides? (apart from a part of running of course )

Fair question.

Picking up the pace and accelerating up to a sprint for 100-200 meters (give or take) focusing on form and leg turnover.

Ah! ... well after my first run in months and months this morning, they should be called "strokes" ... I guess the time will come when I can actually increase speed in the middle of a run. Thanks for letting me know.

Heh, heh...in my run, they are called 'plods'.

OK Judi & Dud - you guys can be my voice of reason!  I'm sticking to my original plan.  Oly in June, HM in October...sprints thrown in between (and the Warrior Dash in September).  It will certainly keep me plenty busy!

I'm also going to volunteer for a Rev3 HIM in my town, so I can use the discount in 2012.

Hi everybody! Work has been keeping me busy lately, but happily I've been training more consistently than I'd been - just not POSTING as consistently.

George - the Y is great for adult swimmers! I just came home from my adult advanced lesson about an hour ago, actually. I don't know about yours, but the lessons are incredibly reasonably priced here, too.

The Y has been great so far

My swimming as a kid sorta plateaued due to tubes in my ears and gigantic ear plugs that literally blocked my entire ear off. So I couldn't swim with a vest on and had to stop swimming lessons

I can get by, but I can't swim fast at all.

Couple that with a nasty bicep/elbow injury last year, it's going to be a slow go, but I've got a goal in sight and I aim to make it

Forgot to add - down 10 lbs since all this started

Good call!!  Volunteering is a lot of fun too.  A great way to give back to the sport.

I am officially a PT graduate.

Course, in the middle of my run tonight my RIGHT leg decided to cramp up!!  Good thing I was almost done, I turned my speed way down and walked my last bit....Iced it. Not my gastroc, my soleus.  Mary looked me over and we iced it in the office.

Well I finally found a tri race right at the end of the local season that I may be able to squeeze enough time to train. It is a Sprint distance try on May 7 but will mean I'll need to shift to a 16 week rather than 20 week sprint program to squeeze it in in time. Here's the link:

https://www.clubsonline.com.au/eventsregform/index.cfm?fuseaction=display_event_detail&EventID=7105&orgid=3382

After that I am eyeing off some duathlon races in June/July to tie me over to the start of the next seasion. I suspect though as it is in May which is around winter that I will be swimming in a wetsuit of some description which I have never done. Do you think this is something that needs to be practiced extensively before hand, or something I can do a couple of session before hand to get used to? Is it much different?

Happy Australia Day

A few good swims in the wetsuit and you should be fine.  Wearing a wetsuit takes some adjusting to but it isn't a huge adjustment.
Sounds like a good race for you.  16 weeks is do-able.  You just need to remind yourself it's like your first sice it's been a long time....relax and enjoy the day.

had a good run yesterday, did about an hour and 5.5 miles or so.  But the fun thing was I ran the bridges to Paradise Island 3 times (6 bridges total) and even sprinted a couple!  I am a little sore today!  Now that I have the half marathon distance done I am going to concentrate on speed, so things like strides and hills (or in this case bridges) are definitely going to be more involved.

Do you just do strides on a timer?  So wherever you are you just increase your speed for a minute or something?  I'll do some more research on here and online.

I got an email from a friend of mine, she says:

"I have got to say to you have really inspired me. No joke. Seeing your fantastic blogs and the future events you're committed makes me want to get my butt in gear. I went running a few times last week and again today. I even finally broke out this Garmin GPS watch I have to start tracking the miles."

How inspiring is that?!?!  Also a friend of mine said he is signing up for the master's swimming program where I am about to start also!

I really need to pick my events over the next few months this week and get a training program together.  That's my goal for this week!

I also wonder about the wetsuit as I have never had the need to use one!  I think if I were to do a race I would show up a few days before and try one out, that will be a shock I'm sure!

So Adam, were you able to get in a ride?  Did the temps ever drop?  I had no idea that Sydney saw those kind of temperatures.  Here in the Central Valley of California, we can be 100+ degrees for weeks on end.  Makes training a real pain.  They say you can acclimate to it, but so far, I've never found a way.   I usually limit my training to very early runs when it might be 70ish at 5am or after 7pm at night when at least the sun's not beating down on your directly.

Lee, that email from yor friend is awesome!  I love seeing the ripple effect our healthier choices leads to in others.  Not everyone wants to do what we choose to for fun, which is okay.  I am totally for a person doing what they love physically whether it's dancing or martial arts.....all aspects of fitness take a lot of discipline and training to maintain.

Current thinking on the right leg issue is tendonitis in my achilles (bilaterally but the right leg really cramped bad)  I am actually going to take my own advice to so many people and rest it from the bike today, likely from the run tomorrow.....just swim tomorrow.  Will see how it feels after a few days rest and NSAIDS.

Yeah Michelle I did, twiddled my thumbs most of the afternoon waiting for the temps to drop but they never did so in the end I figured bugger it, just go and suffer the consequences. It's been 7 years since I have had a my bum on one of those tiny tiny seats, so it felt very odd, but I slowly warmed to it, although feeling the effects of it in the back and shoulders this morning. I even dragged out my old tri pants to ride in which brought back memories of hard work, and shaved legs

Yeah Sydney can get to those temperatures for sure, especially out west where I am, a real dry heat that leaves men with distance scottish blood either resembling a lobster, or a small pile of ash on the floor Now for a run and swim today ... been a LONG time since my body felt this

Ok another question for you all, is there a replacement for a swim session?

I ask because here it is pushing 38C/100F, AND it is school holidays, and after yesterdays ride I slept straight through my 5:45am alarm to get me there before the kiddie chaos begins. So was wondering if there was some exercises I could do that would work the same muscles that a swim would in the occasion someone is either not near a pool, or in a situation like today?

I will still try to get there this afternoon, hopefully after they have all gone home, but in this temperature, that may be never If all else fails, I'll just swap a session around I guess.

Adam, that's a really good question.....I'm going to do some digging around but I believe people have actually used a rowing machine to activate the same muscles.  It won't five you a feel for the water or mechanics for the stroke that need to be fine tuned but it will get those shoulder muscles and core working.

community.active.com/thread/58737/swimming-alternatives;.../0/... - Cached

I found one article that mentioned use of a Nordic track as it uses the same shoulder muscles and core.  Also suggested light weights with high reps working triceps, lats and delts.

The article I linked talked about a do it yourself Vasa trainer.  A weight bench is used, lie face down on the bench.  Attach strong bands to a post and simulate your stroke, the author suggested 5-10 sets of 20 strokes per min with a minute rest.  My concern for this is your mechanics don't have the benefit of that feel in the water. But, it gets the movement in the muscles which is a start.

Anytime I miss a swim workout I try to switch my plan around to get it done later in the week.  If that doesn't work I make it up by getting on the trainer and doing 30 minutes longer than the swim I was supposed to do.  Staying off of the trainer is usually enough motivation for me to get to the pool.

I would trade the swim work out with upper body strength training.  Lots of internal and external rotation of the shoulder with a light weight.  Endurance training starts at 400 reps in case you interested and like to count.
Rowing is a good workout to replace a swim.

Me I'd let it go and just rest it and be happy, but then again some peoples call me the rest police.

Hope the rest are good  I have a student and starting to take on some other responsibly at work so I actually have ot work.

We all should stop by and give Judi a little umbrella drink.
