smeador - 2011-01-02 7:35 PM Would like to make a small suggestion. Add a cap on the number of points one can receive a day for activity. After just two days there are some that are pulling way ahead. Maybe a little discouraging for any noobs or short distance athletes.

I'd like to get everyone's perspective on this.

Personally I'm one of those who feel if you put the work in you should get credit for it.  I'm definitely one of the short distance people and it doesn't bother me that there are people who are going to get a lot more points for training than me.  I see this more as a fun challenge to keep motivated with training and get into some good eating habits (or out of bad ones).  If everyone (or the majority) feel we should add a cap to the training points, we can definitely do that so if everyone could give their opinion that'd be great!
I don't think there needs to be a cap.... Here's why: The "FEBRUARY CHALLENGE" can be to take your point totals from JANUARY and EXCEED them. Therefore it becomes an individual challenge two months in a row. First, you have to do well in January. Then you have to do *even better* in February. Personally, I can't compete with the likes of Bill. *I* am not out riding my bike for 240 minutes in the snow.... But I *can* compete against myself. So whatever I accomplish in January, it's reasonable for me to try to do even better in February.

I like this!  I have a feeling it's going to take longer than a month for some of these nutritional changes to become a habit.... (they will become a habit, right?)  and I need the motivation of seeing my numbers increase.

OK, I'm heading outside for a walk around the building...  The scale scared me this morning and I need something constructive to do so I don't reach in my drawer for the packet of yummy hot cocoa...

wgraves7582 - 2011-01-03 8:38 AM I don't feel a cap is fair though if I go out for a 4 hour bike ride in January in Buffalo.  I should get points for 240 minutes because I did the activity.
I don't think "points" would be sufficient motivation to get me outside for 4 hrs in January in Buffalo.... I'd need... I'd need... Hm. Nope. I can't think of anything I want that much. Maybe that's why I keep moving SOUTH. I think we should all move in with Yanti.

Moving in with Yanti would be awesome were it not for the mosquitos and the unspellable and unpronounce-able tropical diseases!!

Man - I am getting my tail kicked in this challenge.  guess I'll have to start exercising now.  I am planning a 7.45 mile trail race saturday.  Good thing I'm slow - that'll get my minutes up for the week!

TriAya - 2011-01-01 10:44 PM WELCOME EVERYONE

i am off to a rip rousing start

2 pop tarts plus milk
1 coffee with milk no sweet
1 bowl special k with two med bananas sliced in
1 big plate of homemade fettucine with lamb and green peppers
3 tiny yogurt drinks
1 mars bar

hey. i didn't add any sugar to the mars bar

also 90 min of jumping up and down, dancing, screaming, and waving my arms in the air at the michael franti concert

Yanti - I found pop tarts for sale here yesterday but they were $10 for a box!!!!! I  couldn't bring myself to pay that, are they really worth it?!

When you've been away from home for a long time, anything from home is worth it. 25 years ago, after being in England for over a year, I spent 7.50 for a package of oreos and about the same for a six pack of rootbeer when I found a store that had them just because it reminded me of home. I say $10 for a box of pop tarts is worth it if it reminds you of home. If you've never had them before then I wouldn't waste you money.

michwea - 2011-01-02 9:15 AM So so for Day 1.  Managed a run and gulped down way more than 64 oz. of water.  I'm usually pretty good about that and don't anticipate it to be a problem.  We're low on provisions at the moment, so I fell short on the fruits and veggies.  All was going to be OK on the junk food front until I went scavenging for an evening snack.  Avoided the sweet stuff that seems to be sitting everywhere in abundance, but couldn't stay away from some popcorn.

On to Day 2!

Popcorn is only junk food when you load it with lots of butter, salt or sugar (like kettle corn). At least that's how I see it.

I'm very happy to see ANY points next to my name. I didn't get enough shiny gummy stars next to my name when I was a kid.

Not hugely concerned about how many points others rack up ...
I must have been star-deprived as a kid too. I'm trying hard to make up for it now with BT stars. <----- See what I mean? (Edited to add: OK, the arrow didn't line up with the stars. But if you look at my CURRENT stars, I've got a whole collection of 'em! Of course, they're fickle. So they may be gone by the time you see this. LOL)

oh. my starwhorishness all makes perfect sense now.

I have been in more challenges than I care to even try to remember and have been on a winning team 2x.  I am in it for the chatting, comradary, and pushing myself.

If I win so be it.  If I lose so be it.  I will still train tomorrow and the next day no matter what place I am in.

If it got bad you could split the division in 2 - 1 sprint and 1 long distance but I am happy either way.  I don't feel a cap is fair though if I go out for a 4 hour bike ride in January in Buffalo.  I should get points for 240 minutes because I did the activity.

Speaking of long bike rides in the winter, did you do your century last week?

rnihill - 2011-01-02 9:20 PM Well, I didn't quite get as long of a ride as I wanted, but at least I got my water in again.  And I avoided the junk food - I avoided the buttery, delicious movie popcorn when we took the kids to see Tangled and I avoided all the typical snacks watching football.  And it was a LONG day of football for me...  but I won 2nd place for the season in my pool!!!

You stayed away from the movie popcorn??? what is your secret? I say every time I go to the movie  I will not eat the popcorn...every time I leave I am tossing an empty tub of popcorn into the garbage! I know it is not healthy...I am usually motivated enough to stay away from the really bad stuff, except movie popcorn!

I went to the movies yesterday and avoided all junk!  I usually like the sour candy or mini-pretzel bites   I bought a coffee at the theater, it kills the taste-buds for me.

2 questions on sugar:
1- Does honey count as sugar?
2- I'm assuming sugar is ok to use when training, ie...gels, bars, sports drinks, etc?  I use Clif stuff so it's brown rice syrup, but I think other bars have sugar.

1. Did some research about honey and most things I read count it as sugar but what are other's opinion on this?

2. Yes gels, bars etc are fine when training!

My opinion on sugar/honey is how it is being used...  It the honey being added to a food or drink just to make it sweeter?  If so, I'd probably count it as a sugar.  But, honestly, I'm not really a fan of honey...  so I don't know what else you'd use it for other than sweetening.  Am I making any sense?

Have you tried giving up the sweetener?  A long time ago...  I used to drink my coffee super sweet and super creamy.  As part of my diet I wanted to at least give up the sugar.  I slowly weened myself and now don't drink it with any sweetener.  In fact, when Dunkin' Donuts screws up my coffee (which they do often) and put sugar in it, I can't even drink it.  Or my Dad always has the "sweet flavored cream stuff" that is too sweet for me.

I've also cut back to just a drop of cream.  My hubby wants me to try to switch to using milk instead of cream...  but I'm just not ready to go there!

Sugar is staying in my coffee. It's not the couple of teaspoons of sugar i use each day that's killing me - it's the bacon, second hamburger, handfuls of chips, etc. I'll give up that point and make it up in more minutes or some extra fruit and vegetables.
