I just really liked his comments... okay, maybe i'd throw in a man hug... but thats where i draw the line... Ha! You guys here on BT are alright! Back to the issue at hand - Dem. Senators have fled the state and are currently held up at the Clock Tower Resort and Conference Center in Rockford, IL. I find that funny because when I interviewed for a co-op position at Sundstrand Advanced Aerospace in Rockford, while I was an engineering student at Purdue, it was simply the "Clock Tower Days Inn." I am uncertain how it obtained its "Resort" status, but, rest assured, they have taken great liberty with that term. A "call" has been issued to the Dem. Senators to which they have not responded. As a result, law enforcement has been dispatched to arrest them, on sight, and bring them to the senate chamber, where they will be promptly arraigned. Per state law, the chamber doors will then be locked (literally) and the session will commence. Given that these fugitives from the law have fled our fair state, local law enforcement are powerless to arrest them at their present location. This presents a great legal question of whether federal law enforcement may now be called to act. Probably not, because no actual crime has been committed, but, it is a fun debate, nonetheless. This is no different that the actions of the Dem senators in Texas a few years back who also fled the state during debate on the state's budget bill. It is a sad day in our fair state when our elected officials cannot be trusted with the powers we have given to them. very interesting... i wonder how long they will stay there... however you lost me at purdue... after that painful loss for badgers last night at purdue i regretably retract my man hug comment as well... |

Yeah, I wasn't too popular around the office today ... According to the latest reports, the Dem Senators are "planning on leaving soon," whatever that means. The rumor is they are worried the feds will grab them. Last I heard, the AG is looking at whether there is any authority for doing so or even grounds for requesting federal law enforcement assistance (personally, I do not think there is any basis for doing so). However, it appears the Fugitives will remain in IL for the remainder of the night. |

D-bag of WI: Fred Doucette - 2011-02-17 5:40 PM Does anyone see the situation in WI as being a possible '1st of many more' scenario in other states? ie; the states with the biggest budget deficits going down a similar road with the public sector employees? BTW, the OP admitted that the title of his thread was not ideal and that's good enough for me. I saw on the National news about Michigan. Who's next? |

They did go to Rockford. The Senate majority leader adjourned the senate at 5 pm today. They are starting again tomorrow (Fri) at 8:00. "Calls" (similar to warrants) remain in place for all Senate Dems. They are to be arrested, on sight, and brought to the senate chambers. There was confirmation at about 5 p.m. that the Fugitives were in Rockford. Several of our client school districts have issued notices to teachers that all those missing school will be disciplined. We have about 45 districts anticipating closures for tomorrow due to lack of teachers. MADISON - Democratic State Senators who protested the budget repair bill by leaving the state have been found. The lawmakers are in the Best Western Clock Tower Resort in Rockford Illinois. Law enforcement officials have been looking for at least one Democratic senator to bring in for a quorum required for a fiscal measure, but Democratic Senator Jon Erpenbach confirmed to Newsradio 620 WTMJ that he and all of his Democratic colleagues boarded a bus and left the state. http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/116390569.htmlEdited by JSA 2011-02-17 6:35 PM |

Master 2447 White Oak, Texas | Subject: RE: Dear Gov. D-bag of WI: What a great message these TEACHERS are sending their students. By taking a SICK day to go protest they are telling students to LIE in order to beat the system. I wonder how many of them have held students accountable for missed grades if they skip school. I also think the TEACHERS message to parents needs to be taken to heart. I have your kid 8 hours a day 5 days a week and if you want me to do my job you better continue to hand over the cash. And the Democrat Senators well their message is Democracy is great unless it does not go our way, in that case it is best to shun responsibility, flee the state, and call out the mob. I understand many of the TEACHERS are at the homes of the Law Makers protesting I wonder how they would like the parents whose kids are not getting an education showed up at the TEACHERS homes. And yes I understand the difficulties teachers are under. I am one. |

We, the people of the State of Wisconsin, are at fault. All of us. We allowed our elected leaders and our public officials to govern with no self-control. We allowed ourselves to become burried in debt. We have no where else to turn. We can print no more money. Those who feel this is an attack on public sector employees are ignoring the very platform on which Gov Walker ran. He has set forth an agenda that will cause all of us -- everyone in this state -- some ecomonic pain. But, what choice do we have? Where else can we go?" I agree with most of your post and it's nice to see somebody here that does have an intimate knowledge of the situation. One thing I don't understand though is the comment that those whole feel victimized have been isolated by the harsh realities. Wasn't taking unpaid furloughs a harsh reality? And from my understanding many state employees have not seen a pay increase in a few years (sorry don't have a link to prove that). As far as all of us feeling economic pain; the only thing that is not mentioned as a possible solution is a tax increase. As you mentioned we got ourselves into this mess, maybe all of us, not just public sector, need to help pay for this as well through increase in taxes. I don't like this idea either, but what choice do we have, where else can we go? Also, (and I guess this is where I'm a bleeding heart liberal) why is it a race to the bottom? What's wrong with having teachers and state employees getting nice benefits? I know many (as in at least 100) state employees (I work in the private sector and make over six figures) and I can assure you that they are not driving BMW's and living in McMansions. |

The budget gimmicks are all used up. More pain is on the way, but I'll be damned if I accept a tax increase as anything but the absolute last resort and certainly not to maintain the status quo. So the middle class people are sacrificing the hit with more out their pockets is ok, but no way you'll sacrifice with a bit more in taxes? That seems fair. Can you see how the people at the rally may feel the opposite? Again, it's not like these people are loaded with money. From what I've been hearing from real people with average state salaries they are looking at at least $400 less per month. |

THAT'S the beef. I spoke to many many people today and they all know they need to take a pay cut. They just want to be able to have their right to bargain collectively. If that's asking too much, I dunno... You are correct. I have gotten that same comment from the 15 or so people I talked to today (as they sped away in their Beemers |

Additional to the information you provided, I heard that the Senators already separated and left the resort in Rockford. Anything further since then? Most of them are currently in Chicago. Today TMJ4 tracked them down and followed them to the Windy City. Not sure if they plan on returning tomorrow. However, the Assembly Speaker has stated that if they do not return, the Assembly will likely take up the bill tomorrow morning. Even if all the Dems in the Assembly flee the state (which they have threatened), the Reps in the Assembly have the numbers to pass the bill. Now, this will be interesting b/c the Assembly was the "last stand" for the Dems, who were going to try to push a number of ammendments. However, if the Senate Dems do not show and the Assembly Dems flee the state, the Assembly will pass the bill as written. Here is a great video of a Tea Party member confronting a couple Dems in Rockford: http://biggovernment.com/publius/2011/02/17/video-tea-party-activist-confronts-wisconsin-democrats-as-they-flee-illinois-resort/ |
