16 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Muncie : Official Thread I'm thinking about racing Muncie this weekend and coming into town with my wife and little girl. I know its last minute, but wanted to see if anybody knew of a hotel that would be close that might have availability. I've been calling the fairfield and the holiday inn daily hoping I'll sneak into a cancellation. Thanks for your help and I hope to see you all out there this coming weekend. Be safe in the heat. |

Extreme Veteran 1136 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Muncie : Official Thread I couldn't find a room in Muncie, but ended up booking in Anderson which isn't too far out. Hopefully coming from a different direction I won't see as much traffic on race morning as well. |

New user 7 Columbus | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Muncie : Official Thread Does anyone know if there are any good Italian Restaraunts in Muncie? All I could find is Olive Garden and Johny Carino's. I have never heard of John Carino's but it has decent reviews. Any input from anyone?

Extreme Veteran 423 Frederick, Maryland | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Muncie : Official Thread 1st weather forecast update: at the moment, it's looking like the post from CGenther with the forecast 11 days out may actually turn out to be correct if the one forecast models holds. So, here's the latest: Race start: temp 76, winds light and variable 9 AM: temp 81, Heat Index 84, winds WSW 3 mph 11 AM: temp 88, HI 91, winds W 5mph 1 PM: temp 92, HI 95, Winds WNW 5-10 mph 3 PM: temp 94, HI 97, Winds WNW 5-10 mph Humidity won't be the best with dew points in the mid 60s but at least they're not forecast to be in the 70s which would drive the HI near 100. Light winds will help on the bike but not help too much to cool us down on the run. This one model and the NWS folks are also thinking not too much in the way of clouds out there either. So, at present, probably not much relief from the sun. However, another model I'm looking at has been hinting at bringing a weak front in the area during the day on Sat. If this model turns out to be correct, there could at least be more clouds present during the race than is currently being forecast, which would help at least provide some protection from the sun. Might help to lower the temps a smidge too. But, like I said, this doesn't fall into line with the official forecast. If I see something significant (as in leaning to the other model), I'll repost. But, more than likely, not much will change during the next several days. I'll also have 3 models to look at come Wed. So expect another update later probably Weds. For now and as we've been expecting, prepare for a hot run. |

Extreme Veteran 1136 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Muncie : Official Thread Thanks SBRDave for the weather info. Not exactly the greatest news, but it's sure better than the heat we're dealing with right now! I took the Desoto cool wings for another run this afternoon; 107 degrees. Last time I brought a small handheld non-insulated water bottle to squirt on myself, but this time I took a full size Camelbak chill bottle instead. I have to say that with the icewater on my head, shoulders, and arms, plus the cool wings retaining the water and helping with evaporative cooling I really did feel good. I will normally slow down significantly in extreme heat but with this setup I ran a 5-miler averaging sub 7:30mm and my HR and RPE were completely normal. I think I will attempt to carry the bottle during the race and try refilling with ice and water at the aid stations. |

One thing the pros swear by is to put ice down your shorts. Heard from military guys in the desert that this works as well to cool your core down. I'm debating wearing my club jersey or DeSoto cooling top. I ran at Eagleman with the former and did well in the run. Temps were a bit lower though. Will take the DeSoto top and decide Thur night. BTW, yeah, I hear ya - ran a 6.5 miler in 100 degree heat, HI 111, on Friday and I slowed WAY down. At least for the moment we shouldn't be facing that. To jullian_o and everyone else - Yeah, getting excited about racing despite the weather! Easy week planned to keep active but to let everything recover and be fresh come race day. Lookin' forward to it! |

My name is JILLIAN not JULLIAN. I am a woman, JILLIAN is a women's name, JULLIAN or JULIEN is a man's name. I am 29 years old and have been correcting people since I was in kindergarten. I was hoping with the popularity of The Biggest Loser and Jillian Micheals being on that show would change, but my name still get botched. |

Expert 1128 Fort Riley, Kansas | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Muncie : Official Thread In regard to the heat on the run. They have cups of ice at every aid station along with ice cold sponges. I used the sponges last year but won't this year because they made my sock a wet mess and I had a mild form of trench foot after the race. I am going with a hat instead of a visor, and will be putting ice in my hat, in my tri top, and in my shorts. The large veins in your upper legs, keep them cool with ice and cold water and that will lower your internal temperature. |

Sorry I mistyped even though I had just looked at your name above the post. Plus I actually know a Julian too and perhaps my fingers just automatically went to the "u" instead of the "i". My apologies. |

Did not know that and I am former military! I got out before the current desert goings-on though so maybe that's why I have never heard about it. Definitely will give it a shot. Jillian- I hate the soggy sock feeling, and found that the "ultra-light" smartwool running socks will not absorb much water and you should be fine to douse them as much as you like. I have also had good luck with Feetures socks, and am actually planning on racing Muncie in these. |
