runnerx - 2011-11-30 1:40 PM Mirdban...having run NYC Marathon 5x, unfortunately I'd suggest not to get your hopes up too much for a similar atmosphere. We're in NYC only for the last miles. The marathon goes through many neighborhoods whereas we'll mostly be on a highway. I still think the Ironman in NYC aspect will be great, but just not as great as having literally 2million people along the route as the marathon has.

I figured as much.  But wouldn't it be cool if people on the West side of Manhattan came out to line the last couple miles of the run?  Or maybe if they came over to NJ to give us a boost going into and coming out of T2?  I know, they most likely won't but maybe they will...

I assume there'll be decent turnout of spectators on the West Side, and they can cross over the GWB to where transition is.

We'll see...I'm not setting my expectations high, but I agree - would be great with lots of support, and then who knows, maybe they'll change things up next year. Even just a minor tweak to the course and you can have the finish in Central Park.

This will be my first full IM.  I chose NYC because my family is in NY.  Call me crazy but I've done Nautica NYC Tri and don't mind swimming in the Hudson.  I've done Galveston 70.3 this year and doing Kansas 70.3 next year as my warm up race.  Ironman said the updated participant list will be posted in the next few weeks as well as a list of the host hotels.  There are about 3k people registered (normal reg, ironman foundation reg, & charity reg).

Thanks for the update on when they will be posting host hotels - I have been checking everyday.

Have you all joined the Facebook group?

Noticed a posting about the tides. Apparently tide is against us slightly at the start, but then at 730, it turns and is with us. All in all, sounds like it won't be that much of a factor. Although, I guess this means those who take the longest will benefit the most.

I joined the FB page and saw the same info.

I haven't been counting on the tide as the one time I did swim in the Hudson the tide benefitted the people before me and died before I got there.  Luckily, the jellyfish were there for all of us to play with

Has anyone seen an elevation profile for the run yet?

Also, how many stairs are there exactly to get up to the bridge?

Quite a few, actually. It's about 30-35 up and then back down on the Jersey side, then about 25 more down to get off the bridge on the Bronx side. You can see it pretty well with the google street view thing.

For the sake of specificity, perhaps it would be wise to include stair climbing into Long Runs, eh?

I am not doing NYC this year, but I may do it in 2013, and if so, I would route my Long Run past somewhere where I could go up and down stairs as this would help the body acclimate and [hopefully] lessen the shock of what it will feel like on the legs come Race Day after 120-miles-plus deep into the event.

There's some motivation to swim and bike faster.  Imagine what a cluster it's going to be in the middle of the pack going up those stairs.  "on your left, on your left, on your left..."

hmmm... I tried to look at it on Google street view, but I couldn't quite tell where the stairs are. If the above is right - man, that's a lot of stairs late in the race.... Will we be running on the upper or lower deck of the bridge?

So about these stairs ...

I've been looking at google maps trying to get an idea of where they are. The run course directions say that when you turn off of Hudson Terrace you run on the north side of the bridge , therefore we have to cross over it.

There is a pedestrian overpass to cross over that has stairs up and down. That puts you on the north side of the bridge for the run across.

After going over the bridge the NY side looks like it has one, maybe two sets of stairs going down to get back off of the bridge.

I attached a couple of screenshots to show what I mean. Not sure if they are correct, but its the best that I figure.

Yep, that's them. There is a set of ~20 stairs to go up immediately upon turning right off Hudson terrace onto the path towards the footbridge (there's another streetview picture not included above that shows those), then about 30 up one side of the footbridge and 30 more down the other side. Then about 25 more down on the Bronx side of the bridge. I expect controlling the legs going downstairs at that point is going to be tougher than finding the strength to go up. If there's any good news, it's that those are all of the steps - there is another footbridge to deal with getting across the Henry Hudson Parkway onto the greenway path, but that starts at street level on the east side and has ramps down on the west side.

This run is really going to be interesting mentally - a serious uphill run right out of transition, then the two hilly 8-mile out and backs with the bridge looming there the whole time, with you just knowing that eventually you're going to have to climb up there and cross it, then the long major uphill to get to the steps and the bridge, then the awesome experience of crossing the bridge, and finally, assuming you've made it that far, seven gently downhill miles with the Manhattan skyline in the distance the whole way. Shoud be cool.

Are we sure that we'll be running on the walk way, and not in the street?

I could see them blocking off one lane with cones or something and then we wouldn't even use the stairs, but just stay in the road.

The wording on the course map says "To the GWB North pedestrian path" ... I guess we can't be certain yet, but I think that's where they will have us.
