Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Everyone has a lot of great races lined up! I've only signed up for IMFL and will consider others depending on how my rehab goes. I hope to do ChesepeakeMan IM aquavelo again this year. Right now and for 4-6 more weeks I'm on crutches and can only put my left foot down. Recovery from surgery is going well and most days I see gains. I was able to ride 15' yesterday at the Y (can't stand or lift my leg so tough to get on trainer or bike with top tube) but only could pedal 270 degrees forward but full revolutions backwards. Riding is more for range of motion than anything but it is good for my head. I hope everyone is enjoying a great holiday season and maybe have some sweet tri related gifts under the tree. We are truly blessed to be able to participate in this sport. |

Master 1779 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread So far I'm signed up for IMFL in 2012. We've planned out the rest of the year to include a few half marathons, a half iron and different types of races in between. Kathy, you've made remarkable progress in the last few days. If things keep up as they have you will be back to training in no time. Happy Holidays IMFL peeps! |

Member 763 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread My 2012 race schedule is somewhat light at this point, but it is: July - Musselman HIM, Geneva NY or potentially Syracuse HIM August - Litchfield Hills Oly, New Hartford CT (maybe) September - Westchester Oly Tri, Rye NY (maybe) November - IMFL Since IMFL is my first IM distance race, I'm taking it 'easy' in terms of races and focusing on IMFL. It should be an interesting year...well, 11 months. Happy new year to all.

Veteran 317 Jacksonville | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I have most of my races in my signature, but will repost them anyway. These are my main races, by the way...For instance I am doing a 5k this coming weekend (wanting to break 20'), but I don't consider it a true race like I view the other races. February: Breast Cancer Marathon Jacksonville, Florida March: Gate River Run 15k (first ever road race in 2010, so use this as a gauge of personal fitness, plus I have an excellent seed this year) April: St. Anthony's OLY May: Florida 70.3 June-July: Nothing as of yet, perhaps a local sprint race in one of the months to break up the building blocks August: Hammerhead OLY Triathlon Camp Blanding, Florida September: Augusta 70.3 (Goal: sub 5) November: Ironman Florida |

Off season training is going good, I have been doing Jorge's plan to improve the bike and taking swim lessons and weekly clinic to improve the swim. This week is a run focus week as I am in So Cal on business till the middle of next week. I did secure a demo bike for a group ride Saturday though. It will be nice to get outside on the bike, it has been a few weeks. 10 months to go, but I'm not wishing it away. Too many other fun races to do this coming summer! |

Member 763 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread First of all, happy new year to everyone. Second, since precious time is ticking away, I have a question (or two) for some of the more experienced folks out there about coaching and training plans. My main question is this - is coaching worth it? If I have a plan and the motivation to follow it, is there substantial extra benefit to coaching? In other words, is the free BT 20 week IM plan, for example, good enough, or am I doing myself a disservice by not going the extra step and getting a coach? And if coaching, do folks have views about online vs. in-person/local coaches? I just want to make sure I'm going about things the right way since IMFL will be my first full IM distance race....hence my question about coaching. Thanks to all in advance.

Expert 977 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'll take a stab from my experience. I belong to a tri club that is run by a coach. She offers scheduled workouts with the team for $120 per 6 months. With that we get structured swims on Mon and Wed, track workout on Wed after the swim then long bike on Saturday and long run on Sunday with the team. We also get some advice but not specific to my situation. This also pays for renting the pool, track, gets us jerseys, etc. Very small price to pay. In addition she offers one on one coaching for an extra charge. I signed up for this to get me through IMFL, my first. This entails a specific weekly workout plan that was tailored around my specific fitness. She also pays a little more attention to you when we have our team workouts. I think having the specific training really did help me. Could I have done it on my own, probably. But it was nice having someone adjust my schedule around races. Good luck, Duane |

Veteran 252 peoria, az | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I didn't use a coach for my first IM in 2008. I used the Be Iron Fit book and it was great. I finished with a 14:29 and felt good. I had 12 friends, from my tri club, also racing so we trained and kept each other on track. I started using a coach the next year hoping it would push me harder and I needed the accountability. I'm a middle to back of the packer so I wanted a kick in the butt. I was reg. for Florida again but ended my season with a stress fracture and could not race. I paid $125 a month for almost a year and didn't see much improvement. Maybe I just didn't have the right coach??? I didn't feel like he really paid that much attention to me and I only got feedback once a week. Sometimes it was generic or I didn't here from him at all. I'm going back to the book and BT's training plans for this years IM and I'm hoping to improve my time. I would love to finish around 14 hours. Just my 2 cents |

I did IMFL in 2011. It was my first IM. I plan to be down there this year volunteering with a group so we can get entered for 2013. My idea was to train by myself and to follow a 20 week plan. As it turned out, I was very fortunate to meet 3 people who were training for IMAZ, which was 2 weeks after IMFL. We trained together a lot, especially on the bike. The decision to hire a coach really depends on what your goals are. I'm sure if I had a coach I would have finished a little faster, but I was very happy with my sub 14 hour finish. I think the most important piece of advice is to find someone to train with, especially on the bike. I rode 5-100 milers leading up to IMFL and several other 70 -80 milers. Some people will say there's no reason to ride 100, but for me it was very important. I needed it physically and mentally. With that said, I couldn't imagine riding that many miles without others accompanying me. So, coach or no coach, my advice is for you to find a training partner. |
