Veteran 231 Coeur d' Alene, ID | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread so what course changes have people heard of. I live in Coeur d' Alene and can not find any changes to the course. The only one I have heard of will not happen. It is the hwy in to town from the south. They would have to close the hole thing down and that would not work. People are not going to drive 50 miles out of there way to go around. |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread They'll close one lane in each direction. It's a four lane highway. I'm 99% sure it's going to be the course. The contract with Hayden Lake is up and they don't want the race going through there anymore. The second reason is that the old course had way too many turns at the bottom of descents. It was fairly dangerous itself. |

I agree about the turns at the bottom of some of the descents. can be very dangerous. please keep us posted on any bike course changes you hear about. we appreciate it. |

Member 319 Seattle, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread For what it's worth, I e-mailed the mayor of CdA a few months back asking them to leave the bike course the same, and I recently got a reply saying no decision has been made yet. Here's her reply: Dear Sarah,
Thanks for sharing your concerns regarding the Ironman bike route. I think we can all agree that Ironman Coeur d’Alene is an outstanding event. The city is committed to continuing that tradition.
As one of the decision makers, we surely will consider safety, manpower needed, and aesthetics of the course. At this time, no decision has been made.
Best regards, Sandi Bloem Mayor |

Member 54 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I am very excited to have signed up with two other gals from the Sacramento area. I'm having a hard time trying to find a place to stay. Looks like every place jacks the price sky high and had a price for the whole week. One of the gals has specials food needs and so I was thinking of a condo or small house. If there are any other peeps that want to go in on a bigger house near the course downtown let me know ASAP. The more people the cheaper it may be. Bike transport question. What's the most cost effective way you get your bike there. I've done tribiketransports before but I'd like to not pay 300 dollars to get my bike to and from. Edited by anandiheart 2011-08-30 9:59 PM |

I reserved a 4 bedroom beautiful house on a golf course about 10 miles away for $2800 for 7 nights. Thats pretty cheap if you ask me. There are some a little smaller for $1500 as well. |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread We can back and forth on this until we're blue in the face Mark. The bottom line is I've heard from multiple sources that the course is changing. I would love it if stayed the same, as it's the perfect course for me to make up time on people that don't have the tactical advantage of leaving here and know the technical ins and outs of the course. The e-mail is meaningless. They changed the run course last year and didnt make an official announcement until about may of last year. Second, the corporate ironman folks are not the ones to ask. You need to get ahold of Mac the race director. |

I've been lurking on this thread soaking up the information about possible course changes but am sitting on the fence no longer. Hoping the "hills" of North Georgia will prepare me for CDA. Not sure what will prepare me for the cold water, though.
This is my first IM...I was shaking filling out the registration form online. Now, I'm a little shell shocked that I'm really doing this. When does that wear off? |

If you can get here a few days before the race and take a dip so you will know what to expect when you hit the water will help. Edited by mark.evans 2011-09-07 1:38 PM |

Paul Thanks for the map. It looks like some of those climbs are pretty long. Based upon comparison, if you take the climb along the lake (approx 1 mile long each way), the climbs along 95 look pretty LONG. |

Extreme Veteran 427 St. Louis, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Yup.....by the elevation calculations there are two climbs in each loop of consequence.... 1.74 mi @ 4.6% avg and 2.08 @ 3.6% But it also looks like there is zero bike handling corners to be concerned about and the pure number of direction changes (up and down) seem diminished...... I, for one, will miss the long steady downhill from Hayden down to T2.

Veteran 513 Coeur d'Alene, Idaho | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Both those maps look the same... but I would be surprised if they stop the highway traffic for the turnaround at that point when about 2 or 3 miles further down the road is the on/off ramps for the Indian casino. I would think they would shorten the leg out around the lake or something so that they can utilize the underpass at the casino - plus there would be a big crowd there for the turn. |

Expert 1159 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Looks like the race finally sold out. Any thoughts on why it took so long? Dilution due to adding two more races? Concerns about water temp after last year? Change in bike course? I've always felt this race had a great reputation, so I'm surprised it was open as long as it was. |

Extreme Veteran 555 Carrollton, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I bet it had a lot to do with the cold water temps from last year. When I told some friends in my tri club about registering, the first thing they all mentioned was how cold the swim was and how they all knew someone who sat in the warming tent too long that they were concerned about making the bike cutoff. |

When does that wear off?" About 12 hours after you finish! Plenty of time to put in some good training. Find a good training plan (or a coach to help you) - and put in the effort up front. Until you have done one - it can be really tough to know what to expect. My advice - make sure you enjoy it - because you never get a chance to do your first Ironman again! I'll be right there along side you - I have the benefit of having done one IM - but it was a flat course in September. This will be a whole new challenge - but I've already got my training plan laid out! (I actually can't wait to finish marathon season so I can begin laying down a base in the bike and swimming!)
