Have no fear Rick, its here too. 20% of the kids and 50% of the teachers at the Pre-school my wife works at are out with the Flu (several diagnosed as such), and 5 kids went home today with +102 fevers.

The year I don't get a Flu shot is the years it gets too close for comfort.

While your cycling base will have some positive benefits to your legs, pedaling does not involve the pounding your legs have to suffer through during each run.

This repeated pounding actually causes micro-cracks in the bones of your legs which then heal after the miles, which in turn makes your legs stronger, which in turn enables them to withstand more punishmnet ... which then goes on.

Be careful not to push it too much in the beginning. Ramping up volume by 10% compounded week after week is the rule of thumb that I have heard.

oneword - 2006-02-15 10:35 AM

I did 4.5 last night, but man, I'm tired. 8 miles left to 50, which was my goal. I have my first 5K in 20+ years Saturday, so I'm swimming the rest of the week so I can have fresh legs and go out and crush that thing.

Considering I just starting running after a hiatus of MANY years last month, even with my cyclists base of thousands of miles, my legs still need to get used to doing this. I had 40 miles in January, so 50 this month is a bit of a boost.

Since I was a little behind this week I just went and ran 3.2 on my lunch hour. It was way too hot and now I'm hungry for lunch!

I think I'm at 28 miles for the month now - almost 60%!! And only 5.8 left to do outside of my race.

Way to go!!!  Let's keep up the pace!!!

I got another 6.4 yesterday and plan to do that much tomorrow, maybe even an informal race.  My miles will be accounted for but it is going to the 27th before I get in the last few.

GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!  WE SHOULD ALL BE PROUD!!

Hey gang!

It feels so good to be #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go!

I am finally over the flu bug (fingers crossed), ate some real food yesterday and am dressed for a run today. I'll head out and see how I hold up, but would love to do my 4 mile loop. I'll get in another run or two this weekend, and Monday morning is my first workout with my triathlon training group, we will be doing RUNNING...so, that should get me back on track. The following weekend I'm going to the beach, but can do a bit of running there and then we have a few days the following week to close out the month so I should be all set on my goal. My dream is to get it finished before I head to the beach, so the rest is gravy, but I really need to get some biking and swimming in there, too....

Ok, enough yapping, time to run....

I'm getting close. I ran 4 times this week but didn't get a long run in. I'm hoping to get an 8 miler in Sunday. Either way, I'm in striking distance with 4 short runs or 2 longer runs.

Go Florida Force!

My runs have suffered this week. Overall training has suffered! I still have Sat and Sunday to try to get in a couple of runs, but between pains and life this week...

Oh well, we shall prevail!

This cold front and snow put a real damper on my running. I don't plan on gettting on the roads today. Hopefully I'll be able to get my long run in tomorrow or Monday.

It's freakin' cold outside. I wish I were in Florida with you guys. Right now, there's a windchill of 2. Yes, 2. It is not a typo. Freakin' 2. The roads melted, but now they froze again.

Thanks for listening. Now go enjoy the warmth.

Don:

My run time for this past week is 121 minutes. I got me a looooong run in yesterday morning. After my run earlier this week, hat smoking 34 min 3 mile, I felt like crap, no energy, no stamina, no endurance. I left out yesterday not knowing what I was going to do, got to the 3 mile mark, I felt good, got to the 4 mile mark, felt good, 87 minutes later I roll back to the house, felling gooooood!

I guess my run earlier I was dehydrated, tired, something...

Pardon my cross-post, and...

Pardon my endorphin high here...

But...

WOOOOOOT!

1st race in 20+ years, and a new personal best for a 5K - 28:29 (previous was 31:21 - and this was when I was 21 - I'm 44 now!) . Hilly course on the Univ of Miss Medical Center campus. Temp in mid 40s, cloudy, a little bit of drizzle, gusty NE wind in the 20+ gust range.

Race started at 9:00 AM. Got up at 7:00, ate two PBJs, drank some water, headed on over to UMC. Nicely organized, check-in was at the Student Union. Lots of cute nursing students... and compared to cycling events, plentiful and FIT middle aged women too I may skip the Natchez Trace Ride on the 22nd and do the Run for Life on this same course again. I had a blast!

Mass start for the runners.. I was somewhere in the middle of the pack. I might've jackrabbited a little bit at the start, took me about the first mile or so to catch my wind. I found out that compared to a lot of people, I climb very well... I seem to maintain the same pace going up hills as on the flats and downhill.

I'm going to be very interested to see, when the race results are posted, how I did in my age group.

P.S. My goal was to beat 30:00. I think I did very well!

AWESOME RACE!!!!

Congrats on getting back into the racing scene!!!  Florida Force Rocks!!!

I had a great race today too...first multisport race of the season...yay!!!  I'll put a race report in the database once I get the official numbers from the website, but suffice it to say I did much better than I thought.

It was a 5K/10mile/5K duathlon.  First run 23:38, T1 about 1 min, bike about 31 minutes by my watch, T2 less than 1 minute, second run about 24:30.  Total time 1:20:24.  Probably didn't place but I beat my time goal by 10 minutes!

The point of all this?  Well, I got 6 out of the last 13 miles in that I need for the Challenge! Go Florida Force!!!

Congrats on your PR ... WAY TO GO!!!

Don:

Put me down for 19.14 miles this week ... calf is doing fine and was not a problem over the weekend.

This should put me over the top for the monthly challenge, which is right on par with the training schedule. Now that the 1/2 mary + base building are out of the way, I've got some interval + tempo work to do ... less mileage, more intensity.

Giddy-up TEAM FLORIDA (and the rest of the SEC states)!

Nice job on your races this weekend guys!! And to have a PR after 20 years is so impressive!

Well, I had a terrible run yesterday in the hot, scorching sun. I was planning on about 9 miles, but only made it about 7.5. This was my last long run before my race next week so I was really hoping to make it longer. It was my own fault for running at noon though (with 3 kids I have to run whenever I get the chance!)

So - my total for the week is 11.7

Total for the month is 35.5.

Percent of goal - 75.5!!

I'll probably be doign two short runs this week - like 4 or 5 miles between the 2, then I have the 1/2 mary next week that will put me well above the 100% mark!

7.5 is still pretty awesome for a *bad* run, huh???? I hope the half is as fun as it sounds like it will be!!!

And great job on the races this weekend - we have an incredible team, don't we?

I ran with my new triathlon group this morning, just over 3 miles. It went great and it was so fun remembering how motivating it is running with others.

So, with today's run I am at 30.88 miles out of 40, or 77.2%...whahooo!

GO TEAM FLORIDA FORCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone,
I'm out of action with the Flu My son and daughter were diagnosed with it today and I'm starting Tamiflu or whatever it is this afternoon.

Can someone please takeover compiling the stats, Steve? I'm sweating and chilling too much here at home and don't have any messages on my work email server as I must have left Outlook running.

Keep up the good work everyone, I'll be back with you in a couple of days...back to the couch with the kids watching Monsters, Inc...

Oops! I just sent you my stats!

OK since I'm "the Riker" I can take over for this week and get the stats together.  If everyone's got their workouts logged (which you SHOULD for purposes of this challenge!!) then I can get the info from there and send it off to Steve.

Everyone cool with this?
