Cool. Thanks for the response.  Kudos on the Race Guide. Y'all did a great job.  It looks like a well planned event.  It will be my first time to race Kemah and am looking forward to it.

Soo.... If I read the running directions correctly - we run over the Kemah bridge, get to the bottom, turn around... and head STRAIGHT back over it? Shesh

You are correct but you get two downhills too lol just keep telling yourself it's making you stronger and a challenge is better than easy. It's actually not as bad as it seems.

Yeah those downhills at the Livestrong Austin Marathon tore up my medial plica. Can we choose to just roll downhill? I don't know how much difference this would make but I competed in the Clearlake Triathlon last year and the Olympic bike course took us over the bridge twice, instead of the run. I'm excited for the challenge, if I survive the Gulf.

Yeah but we'd have to go over turn around at the bottom loop under and come back up. Did that first year. Had 8 wipeouts. Bad ones. Never again, too dangerous. Plus a flat run isn't challenging : ) It's an Alcatraz qualifier, I have to make you all sweat! lol.

If we bike check on Saturday, will we still be standing in the same line (as those with bikes) for body marking Sunday morning?

opening to get into transition is wide. There will be 4-6 people checking helmet stickers and bike end caps and brakes. There will be room for others without bikes to come in and out. Since you will not be allowed to leave your bag the night before you will have to show your number and your helmet for inspection BUT that's it. So more than likely they'll be 2 lines but the one without bikes will move much much faster. If you're doing the oly I would suggest checking your bike the night before.

OK. Thanks.  I'll probably do that.  My only hesitation is what to do with my pump that morning because I'll want to top off my tires.  I can figure that one out.  From past races, is there already a long line when transition opens at 4:45am?

No not really especially if you've checked your bike. You could always save time by body marking too if you do it with a sharpie and know what we're looking for. HOWEVER if you come to the expo we'll be ink stamping people if you want to get that done the day before. WE'll put your number on each of your arms (side) and then on the right calf is the number let calf is the age. I pump my tires up a bit more than they should be, like 130-135 then they are 120-125 by race morning. I don't think the line will be crazy long at the HCC trailer anyway. Up to you. Just my 2 cents.

Line was super easy last year.  No worries at all.  Also the bridge isn't that bad if you have anything left in the tank when you get to the base.  I did not last year and it was painful.  Lesson learned.

Kemah Water temp.... Was 76..... now because of the storm and winds this weekend in the gulf..... 67. WOW it's a big drop. Wetsuits are looking like a sure thing. Those that don't have them no worries.... The water that was warm got pushed out by this colder water, hopefully the colder water will be pushed out and replaced with warmer water again. Fingers crossed! Stay tuned, more updates to come. Get those wetsuits ready!

Another dumb question:  I'm looking at the timing chip and I'm putting it on so that the flat part is against my ankle.  This leaves the "rails" facing out.

This configuration leaves me concerned about tearing my wetsuit while pulling my it over the chip after the swim.

1.  Am I putting the thing on correctly?

2.  Do I need to worry about ripping my wetsuit?

Sorry in advance - this is only my second race and first wetsuit legal race.

Thanks,

twomarks

My wetsuit is long enough that it will cover the chip.  If yours is long enough to cover it, that might be the best way to avoid tearing the outside.  The chip should work even if covered by the wetsuit.

two marks,

Please refer to the photos and lengthy description in the digital guide on the timing chip. The guide was emailed last week and can be downloaded via the site as well. It has a lot of useful info everyone needs to know.

1. No that's not correct. The flat part faces out and no it will not cut your skin. I wore one for 3 days and worked out in it to be sure. Forgot it was there most of the time. If it irritates you you put it on too tight.

2. If fixed it shouldn't rip your suit.

3. Try to pull your suit leg up just a tad so it's not covering the suit. Should come off easier that way too.

It will work even if it's covered "but" the chip omits a higher frequency rating when not covered so if your suit is the correct length and "just" covers it.... pull the leg up a to expose it for the best possible reading. All-in-all, it should not matter, but better safe than sorry. We will also have extra straps if any of them pop off at the wetsuit stripping area.

That was 2011. We didn't replace until we cemented our 2012 contract with them. It said 2011 specially for that reason, we where unsure on how many spots we would purchase. I'm referring to when we had 50 listed. A lot will still roll down.

Well i am sure 99.99% that signed up for the race as a Q for Alcatraz see that there were 50 slots stated on the Alcatraz website and would assume there would still be 50 slots for the race.

How much would it cost me for a slot then? Cool

I have a 2 buddies counting on me Q-ing and racing with them in SF...

Unfortunately you can't just buy a spot. Our race can but you cannot. Nice try though Laughing

Sorry for the confusion. We paid primo dollar for 50 spots for 2 years and only 22 of them got used one year and 27 of them the next. More than half didn't get used believe it or not. Maybe it's the travel, cost, and toughness of the race, who knows. So we couldn't continue to waste the extra money. At the end of the day it's a business as well as something we love to do. However, we also saw it as the opportunity to make the qualification spots something that were more sought after. When there's less of something and it's harder to get all of a sudden people want it more, it's human nature.

I should have just taken it down all together until 2012 was secured but I DID make sure it said 2011 at that time that way those reading it would know that it wasn't 2012. Since we are going to keep the 30 spots ongoing now there's no date because we're good to go for a while. Sorry again for the confusion. Have an amazing race, go even faster, and you'll win your AG and you won't have to worry, even if you don't the roll down has good odds.

Well now that I'm:

  1. Officially out of the race
  2. Officially out of the country for the race
  3. Have a spouse and friends still in the race
  4. Will be in a hotel with network access at the time of the race.

I want to know about athlete tracking and finish line video.  Don't suppose you have a super secret web site that will show it live.
