Ok, let's get a topic going this week:

What is your biggest training/racing concern for 2012?

So, from you, my mentor group - any marathon vets? Any general racing advice to calm the nerves that I know will make an appearance?

What's looking tough for you in 2012? How can we help?

My only concern is staying injury free, mainly due to running.  I'm going to try and increase no more than 10-15% week over week, hopefully that does the trick (although last week was a lot comparied to the week before).  What is not really a concern of mine, but I will mention, is that it's hard to me to go by a plan.  I am a totally random trainer.  Last year I simply made sure I did a fair amount of s/b/r to improve over the year before and it worked.  I'm sure it will this year also.  BUT......how about I really follow a plan and see how close to the OA podium that can get me, not IMKS 70.3 but the OLY distance races afterwards.  So if I follow a good HIM plan and do well at the 70.3 distance, then it would make sense I would do very well at the OLY races.

Marathon:  I've only run one, April last year.  ORIGINAL plan was to go for 3:30 but started feeling knee pain about 6-8 weeks prior to race and ended up cutting mileage down considereably.  After looking at logs, it was clear that I increased mileage too fast.  So I ended up lining up with the 3:40 pace group hoping I could hold on, I hit the wall between mile 19 and 20.  Ended up at 3;47, still felt good because I FINISHED!  The last 6 are indeed harder than the first 20.

Recommendation from my vast marathoning experience of ONE race:  I say pick a pace group on race day you know you can hang with.  You can pick up the pace with a few miles to go if you have it in you.  That would be my strategy.  In the beginning it will feel very easy and you will have the desire to go faster.  DON"T DO IT!  The last 6 will be HORRIBLE if you do that.

With a big increase, either hold steady around that mileage, or cut a few miles the next week (recovery week) and add them back again, slowly.

If you want to follow a plan, go for it! If not, you can pick targets for the week and go for them. For example: Run 20, Ride 100, Swim 6000 yd. Your long run should never be more than 1/3 of your total weekly mileage. Don't do anything too hard on back-to-back days. Try to give each workout a purpose - even though sometimes it'll be "I'm going to run three miles because I have a free half hour!". It's not the best strategy, but it works pretty well, especially in the base months.

A training plan will give you a little more direction, some periodization, and will take the guess work out of things. BUT they are written for a generic audience and might not give you the advantage you want either.

Just some food for thought

Thanks for the marathon tips! I'm thinking I'll stick with the 4:30 pace group and see what happens. Though, I'll think about it harder when the time comes.

You might look at where you swim and see if they have a masters swim.  It is a good way to get your swimming stroke corrected.   We have one that only cost 10 bucks a month.   you can do a single day at $1.

Drills   that helped me.   you can you tube them for correct form or visuals.

1.  Shoulder turn and reach:   Swim a slow fifty rotating in the water so that your shoulder comes into view with each stroke.   Also reach to place your hand on top of the water with each stroke.  That will help you get good rotation.   Focus on rotating hips and shoulders together.

2.  Fists:   Swim with your hands balled into a fist.  You will have to focus on getting good pull with your forearm and gets your arm to track a good S pattern.    Do a 50 with fists then follow up with a 50 regular trying to keep the same tracking.

I have some other drills that will help if you want them.  Those helped me the most.

I'm jealous of your totally affordable master's team! The one in Ft Lauderdale (which, I should add, is one of the most competitive in the country) is anywhere from $75-$100 per month!

Those are great drills! My coach used to bring in golf balls for the closed fist ones. Ugh.

Another good drill is the zipper drill. You run your thumb up the side of your body all the way to the armpit while on the recovery part of your pull. It helps get your elbows in the right position.

I went to a Tri 1.1 Clinic last night just to get the basics of it. I felt kind of scared!!! Especially as the coach talked about trying to get your bearings when you running out of the water. I though to myself whenever I run out of the water its back to my chair and to my drink with the umbrella in it!!

But I am really excited about taking this on and I admire each and every one of you!!! I also heard its addictive. Which I can believe. I'm addicted to racing so I can see myself getting addicted to tris!!!

Hahaha Just get that chair in your line of sight, and the rest will fall into place!

You'll probably end up addicted - but it's a good addiction to have

Ok, let's get a topic going this week:

What is your biggest training/racing concern for 2012?

My main goal is to run a time that I'm proud of, so that I don't feel the need to a rematch.

So, from you, my mentor group - any marathon vets? Any general racing advice to calm the nerves that I know will make an appearance?

Hey Elaine -

I think you forgot one of my favorite marathon goals...enjoy yourself.  During those tough moments I found that saying "thank you" to the volunteers at the aid stations or encouraging cheering from the crowds, etc. really made the experience much more memorable.  Your training will take over when you get there; start slow, find a pace group and stick to your plan but be absolutely flexible at the same time.

As far as my concerns for the 1st part of the year, keeping and maintaining a schedule while keeping it fun.  I tend to "require" workouts, I'd like to weave them into my life in 2012.  With the early races I'm looking at being no longer than Olympic distance, any advice on frequency/division/distances of workouts if planning on 5/week?  If you look at what few workouts I've logged, these are pretty normal/manageable workouts for me.

Thanks and I'm looking forward to getting to know everybody.

Yes - fun! I'll try my best

5 single workout per week, or 5 days a week with maybe 2 workouts? How much weekly time do you think you'd want to dedicate to tri?

The gold plan here will give you a solid plan that fits your need, but we can definitely help you come up with an outline of what to do

I did not realize how lucky I am with the Masters class.   Coach Scott was a D1 swimmer and now is in his 50's.   He does it to stay in the sport.   He also runs our youth swim team here and I think they take 1st about every event.      The Zipper drill was another I was going to suggest.   good luck and let us know how the drills go.

You can kick with the kickboard all the way extended in front of you. Like this, but with your face in the water:

When you need to breathe, take a stroke and turn your head to the side. This will get you used to the motion of breathing, but with a little bit of a safety net.

Elaine-Good luck with your marathon. I have no good advice. I have done 5 over the past few years and have blown up between mile 16 and 18 on all of them. The only one that I felt good about was my first (and slowest) because all I wanted to do was finish. After each race I tweak something. Pacing, nutrition etc. This time I am doing more long runs (last resort!) to try and figure out why I cramp up. So far I have had a 16 and an 18 at my goal pace with no cramps. I still have another 18, a 20 and a 22 to go before the race at the end of feb.All this talk about swimming though. I need to find a masters group.

I think you're taking the right approach

I'd wait for that Master's group until AFTER the marathon. No need to have that much going on at once!

I've used that closed fist drill and it's horrible!!!  Surprised  It really does make you understand the importance of your forearm in the pull part of the stroke.

Zipper drill...hmmm, sound interesting.  I've done the "fingertip drill" where you allow your fingers to scrape the surface of the water on the recovery part, probably same idea with getting your elbows high.

I think once my chiro clears me to get back in the water I'll be doing a lot of drills to work on my (lack of) form.

Given my back and knee injuries right now, obviously I'm going to be very swim heavy the next couple of months.  Any thoughts on a swim program to 1) get me back in shape, and 2) develop form?  Before injury my T-pace (1000y hard, but not all out) is about 1:54 and my all-out 100 is 1:34ish, and my "all day" pace is about 2:05.  I don't flip turn and don't push off very hard on my standing turns.

Ok, let's get a topic going this week:

What is your biggest training/racing concern for 2012?

That's easy for me. With a mostly undecided schedule, that 26.2 on January 29 is staring me down. My 20-miler was less than stellar, but also not under fantastic condidtions.

My main goal is to run a time that I'm proud of, so that I don't feel the need to a rematch.

So, from you, my mentor group - any marathon vets? Any general racing advice to calm the nerves that I know will make an appearance?

What's looking tough for you in 2012? How can we help?

Biggest challenge... staying motivated to workout after a long day at work. Also, while I talked to my husband before setting the goal of competing in a HIM, I'm worried he won't be as supportive as he says he will be about the time involved to train.

I had a year that my wife was pregnant and we decided to get her involved she would set water stops for me and track times for training to keep me on pace.   It gave her a job to help me and kept her envolved so she did not just see me disappear for hours on end.    A year and a half later she ran her first tri and is not kicking but at them.   I hope that may help you tackle your goal.

To crazylife99:

I too work out after work and yes it is difficult. I find getting involved in group training keeps me motivated and helps me stay accountable, especially in bad weather. When the weather is nicer I am much more motivated on my own.

I read something yesterday that said if you find difficulty in finding motivating in doing things you want, then try to find motivation to be the person you would like to become. You want to be a triathlete. Keep that goal posted at work, keep pictures of that at work. You dont want to be someone who is tired from work. You want to be someone that trains hard and suceeds at your goals. Its hard trust me, I understand. But if you put your mind to it, you can do anthing.

to crazylife99 for motivation,

Break down your HIM goal into monthly goals, then weekly goals, then daily goals.  Now you know what you need to do each day to stay on track for your HIM.

For Instance my next race is 4/1 (a sprint).  For my run training I know I want to build to a long run of 5 miles a week before.  So I want to get in runs of 3, 3, and 4 miles this week to keep on schedule.  Do the same for bike and swim.

-Steve

oh another thought,  you need to make working out a habit, plan for it.  And also know yourself and know what your excuses are.  Do you need to work out before going home after work.  I know that if I go home sometime I don't want to go out again.

Weekend plans...  Looks like nice weather in Charlotte (60's).  Plan to do some kind of cross training this evening, a long bike ride (~30 miles) Saturday, 4 mile run Sunday morning,  then take the boy (he'll be 13 next week) mountain biking for an hour on Sunday.  What are others planning?

I'm happy with my training 1 week into 2012, have some kind a exercise each day.  How are you doing?

Now i just need to watch the food intake a bit better Wink

For sure I'll be running both days.  Probably 5-6 miles Sat and longer run Sunday, 7-9 miles.  Temp for tomorrow will max out at 50-51 so I might take the bike out for a short ride.  I might throw in a swim also.  Run is #1 priority right now.

Had my swimming lessons today and it went pretty well. 40 minute lesson then spent another 40 practicing on my own. I have no endurance in the water. So I need to focus on that and my breathing. I realized when my head is in the water I feel a little panic attack coming on. So endurance and breathing will definitely be my areas of focus.

How was everyone's weekend?
