Hi!  My name is Kristen and I was kindly referred to this group by Dave.  I am brand new to the world of triathlons and becoming a triathlete, so I'm trying to glean as much information as I can.  I was going to try and shoot for participating in a sprint triathlon this coming June, but I think I may take a little more time to focus on proper training and purchasing quality equipment.

I'm not a runner...at all.  I swim in the summer and I do bike ride but running IS NOT a strength of mine.  I found a training plan here on the website for beginner runners and started it this week.  I think it's probably just the right speed for me, as I have somewhat coddled my body over the years and have stayed away from high impact sports.  I've had knee surgeries on both knees and therefore I'm a little hesitant to do any type of exercise that may result in damaging my knees.  I also recently purchased a pair of running shoes and I'm hoping to see a huge difference in how I feel when I'm walking/running.  I know it has to be better than the cheap shoes I'm wearing right now!!

I'm excited about this lifestyle change-I was finding that I couldn't stay motivated to get to the gym and even though I enjoy working out and having more energy, it was becoming boring and unfulfilling.  I think this is definitely something I will enjoy doing and then having the added benefit of being healthy and fit will be wonderful!

Thank you for having this resource available!  I'm learning a lot already!!

Kristen

Nice intro, your going to love the work outs because your not working out!  Your TRAINING .    I always find that when I have put some down on the race, my attitude changes completely, now i have a goal, to TRAIN and complete this challenge.  I'll never be more then a MOP racer and I'm ok w/ this.  The reason I love this sport so much is, its ok to walk or go slow to keep your heart rate down, or let them pass you by because your racing your race!  To complete your goals.  You'll soon find yourself thinking I know I can do the distance...I wonder have fast I can do all three.  Start slow!  Don't over do it to fast!  That leads to injury and then no one is racing, just healing.

Super morning this Friday!  I opened up the run alittle and finished the papers really stong.  Alittle less than a inch of snow - made everything look clean again (not dirty and muddy).  I was a trail blazer on the bike leaving the first tracks everywhere i went.  I love being the 1st track on the street and thier front yards.... What a difference from last Friday when I had my mental break down....  Hope everyone has a super weekend.

Welcome Kristen I'm also brand new to the world of triathlons.....I'm a meathead powerlifter and up until a few weeks ago my idea of cardio was walking to the fridge to eat more chicken cause everyone knows "Protein Builds Muscles"....... so we're both members of the "I'm Not A Runner" club.

Got in a 3 mile run this morning and planning for a few swim and cycling sessions over the weekend.

I'm down 13 pounds since the first of the year and fortunately my strength hasn't suffered that much when it comes to lifting.

Due to my job I'm on the "Internets" a whole bunch...I call it research everyone else calls it playing.....anyway I came across a site that lists the top 125 Triathlon Blogs for 2012 LINK ...possibly some interesting reading between training sessions.

I am going to use the Intermediate Full Ironman plan from BT.  A friend of mine used it a couple of years ago and it worked well for him.  I am currently trying to finish my build for the full Marathon in New Orleans on March 4.  I think it will be nice to have a group to communicate with.  Has anyone in the group ever done a Full Ironman?

I'm new to the whole biking thing......things have certainly changed since I had my Schwinn Stingray.

There are some really cool bikes out there, several of the guys that I work with have 5 or 6 road bikes...thousands of dollars worth. I' sure if I get into Tri's I'll soon have several, just like my fly rods, or weight lifting gear, or computer stuff.

Very tough run today.  I did 18 miles at about 9:15 pace.  When I left the house my HR was elevated and seemed to be about 10 BPM faster than normal.  I got it in even though I struggled.  For some reason today I could not get enough to drink.  I actually consumed about 50 ounces of water today during my run.  Curious if the two could be related?

Hi Moana!

Thanks for the welcome!  I think the whole running aspect of a triathlon has kept me from pursuing it, but I've come to the conclusion that I can't keep sitting around hoping for change when I don't do anything to initiate it.  It's only taken me how long to figure that one out???  lol-anyway, every day I wake up anxious to workout and that has never happened.  I used to want to find someone to work out with to help keep me motivated, but now I don't need that, either.  I like my gym time to be about me and this goal really helps me stay focused.

Thanks again!

Hi Bill and SWF!

Thank you for your welcome, as well.  I'm definitely NOT in a hurry to fit into the Triathlon world and what I mean by that statement is, there is a lot to learn and I don't like to rush things.  I know there are some basics I need to address, like running shoes (already purchased), road bike and accessories and a possible wetsuit, but I want to make sure I am making intelligent decisions when it comes to these things, too.  I am trying to set reasonable and realistic weekly goals for myself, too.  My biggest challenge is food and eating, so I'm trying very hard to focus on that and not go too hardcore and not gorge myself, either.

It's only been a week but this past week was great and I felt great.  I didn't realize how much having a goal would motivate me and keep me going.  I haven't told a lot of people that I'm training for a triathlon because I want it to be something for ME...just for a bit longer.  Smile  I don't have a lot of support on the homefront and that's stressful at times, but I just keep in mind that the outcome will be great!!  Better health, better mental wellness, better lifestyle.

Thanks again!

K-

Happy Monday group!  Had a good weekend, just did some good indoor rides.  Hooked up some netflix (watched Ride the Divide and Touching the Void...both highly recommended!), and killed some time in my 45 degree garage.  Still sweat like a fool!

How was everybody else's training?

Mike,

You've given me an opportunity to use some knowledge that I've learned as I pursue my exercise science degree!  Here's the simplest answer to your question:  YES!

Essentially, when you are dehydrated, there is less "fluid" portion to the blood.  Therefore, the heart has to work just a little harder to push the blood through the vessels in order to get the nutrients dispersed throughout the body.  As a result of that, the heart rate is increased to satisfy the requirements.

So, are dehydration and an elevated heart rate related?  Indeed.  Drink some water!  But make sure you get some electrolytes in you as well so you don't get hyponatremic.  Typical rule of thumb is any exercise lasting over about 45 minutes you should definitely start replacing electrolytes (sports drinks, gels, gu's, salt caps, etc.).

Great question!  Hope I gave you somewhat of an answer!

Nice Jamis Jaclyn,  I have a Jamis Xenith SL and I love it.

I did a ton of work this past weekend.  I ended it today with a 52 mile ride and a 4 mile T-run.

Good morning everyone!  great weekend, Son, daughter and I did a high ropes corse this weekend..  Yes it was in Michigan w/ 2 inches of fresh snow on 40 foot platforms....  but what a rush!  I've never seen so many scared people before in my life.  The whole family got a LIFE TILE in the game of life!  Wow wow wow, still feeling it.

Also ran extra miles to fencing class & feeling great today.  I tried to copy paste my Jan totals from training log but had no luck.  Anyways - super proud of them and thinking what a way to get the year off to a great start.

Swam this morning and 1st 16 laps or so I really did well, feeling smooth and like things are starting to click.  the other 24 laps is another story, but each time i go I have more and more good laps.  Pratice is working!

happy Tuesday - and welcome all you new people!  This group is filling up, oh ya baby

It's been a week of no training...end of month meetings and just plain craziness. Heading back home this afternoon and plan to hit the gym in the morning.

They did put out a map of my Sprint-Tri...I guess we're swimming in a lake.....

Well I went home and kicked the son off the playstation and played for a record 4 hours between dinner and all.  Unheard of during the week.  The wife needed time to finish her book before her book club, so i slayed a few dragons and enjoyed non activity!!

This morning felt much better, finished early w/ papers so off to the pool i went.  50 laps in 29:38.  Getting smoother every time, almost worked out breathing on both sides, still rolling my head way to much.....After reading many posts about swimming - good tip for me...look straight down.this really helps keep everything in line and can focus on rolling hips.  So many things to think about when swimming.

Have a rockin Thursday - Start posting more everyone!  Lets hear what your up to - or not up to I don't care...

Good morning group...

I gotta say I'm a bit happy with my consistency over the past couple weeks, and am looking forward to an active recovery week next week (along with some threshold testing to gauge progress).  My body is definitely adapting back to being on a training regimen; it's just taking a little more effort to not hit "snooze" one more time.  Had a good trainer ride this morning and a swim coming up before lunch.

Life in inland pacific northwest right now: fog settled on the roadways and made for a VERY slippery morning commute.  One of those day that I'm glad I have an indoor trainer!

Keep up the good work...
