Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! Pink Socks - 2012-11-11 9:59 PM I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone. I'll try not to bog the group down with too many stupid newbie questions but if I do get moronic, I think I can accept you bonking me on the head and telling me to go study before I ask those kind of questions. Welcome! And this is precisely what groups are for, so ask whatever comes to mind. |

Fun question of the week - Best race you've ever done and why? ie post race food/medals/fun etc. I'll post later after some other replies come in.... TO remember this week - fast is a relative term - fast for one might be slow for another - the goal is to just be faster than you are now! Brigby - we can fit these in but please remember that as the "mentor" I have to make that decision. It's ok for now, but we don't want to get too large either and have anyone get lost in the crowd! Expert 1456 Central New Jersey | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! We're as back to normal as can be for now, thank you for asking! Power is back (lost it briefly Thursday for a few hours) still working on cleaning up the yard, but compared to others damage we got off scott free. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! Great! I just heard about some people I know going out there now for more recovery work. More with forest work, but wow. And for all, before I forget again. Here is a link to a big list of BarryP postings. This has many more links than a previous posting and they're much better organized. Take your time to absorb it. There is a lot there! I haven't made it all the way through yet, maybe not even half-way. |

I have a fairly limited sample to draw from but i would say the Black Fly Tri in Waterville NH. They actually have a full weekend of activities including a time trial, 5K, international and sprint triathlons. Triathletes and their families pretty much take over the town square which is located in the White Mountain National forest. A bunch of us stayed at huge house not five minutes from the starting line courtesy of a friend of mine. His boss owns the place that he and his family use as their winter ski house. 3 floors and something like 6 bedrooms. Must be nice. Very gracious of him. I only did the sprint this year seeing how it was my 1st attempt at triathlons. Next year I might do the whole weekend and compete for the title of Lord of the Flies. |

This has many more links than a previous posting and they're much better organized. Take your time to absorb it. There is a lot there! I haven't made it all the way through yet, maybe not even half-way. I've spend many hours perusing that exact link....lots of good stuff there! Now if only my knee would heal faster -- I'm getting impatient (it's now been over four months with no definite diagnosis). I apologize in advance, but I'm going to whine just a tiny bit here! My accident happened on the 4th of July....I was brought into the ER to get x-rays taken and to get stitched up. Nothing was broken, so they told me to get in with an ortho and get an MRI. MRI was clean (I've had two reptuable sports orthos look at the MRI), so both doctors suggested physical therapy. I did the PT....quad is about back to where it was pre-accident, but my knee is still not cooperating. Went back for a follow-up visit with the ortho a few weeks ago and he suggested a steroid shot (we had discussed it before and I wasn't ready to commit to it, hoping the PT would take care of it). He said that if the steroid shot made it better and then eventually worsened, there's something internal going on that needs to be fixed. If it made it better and never worsened, it just needed some more time to heal. And if it didn't make any difference, it was probably skeletal. Well, it didn't make any difference for me, so skeletal it is....or is it?? I've also been on anti-inflammatories for the past couple months. When my prescription ran out, I refilled it but wasn't able to pick it up right away, so I probably missed 4-5 days. My knee got markedly worse during that time period. I'm pretty sure anti-inflammatories wouldn't do anything for skeletal issues....so now using the steroid shot as a diagnostic tool seems to have not been worth it. And I just know that the next time I go in for a follow-up visit, he's going to recommend surgery....exploratory surgery. Ugh, I don't want to have to do a month of sedentary living (plus all the rehab) again!! I just wish they'd have opened me up right after the accident and taken care of whatever was wrong then. And even worse....since this injury diagnosis has proven to be so elusive, I'm afraid that they're going to do surgery and not actually find anything....leaving me with a healing period for nothing. Anyways, I don't want to be super whiney, but I'm just ready to get back to normal and put this whole mess behind me....and actually start with BarryP's running program |

Extreme Veteran 1222 Tallahassee, Florida | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! Gosh, I feel so bad because I joined the group and then stay silent for multiple days. Once you get to know me, you know that I never stay silent - not in life, at home, on forums, in racing, in sleep. But I've been exhausted because I'm at the peak of my 50k training. And then because of the time change and the exhaustion, I'm going to bed at a stupid early hour and not reading the thread. I'm going to try to go over the other posts so I could learn from what has already been shared and so I can learn everyone's personalities. But in the meantime, I'll answer Lani's question about favt races. My favt was my first but isn't that the way it is for many of us? I trained for the Breast Cancer Half Marathon (called the Donna around here) in memory of someone. The race was perfect in thousands of ways. The weather was perfect, the crowds were awesome, the sunrise over the waterway was stunning, the volunteers were more enthusiast than I can describe, the music was pumping, and I met a survivor in the race that, in a 4 minute encounter, still made such an impact on me that I still quote her. I was passed on my mile 11 by the top marathon finishers and whoa, watching those elite athletes run was even more beautiful than the sunrise I had just watched. When I crossed the finish line, I was a changed person - stronger, happier, better, and never going back to my old way of life. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! 2nd time at a Masters Swim tonight. Really liking it. Getting a much better idea of pace control. Having an actual clock helps quite a bit with that (and being able to follow someone who knows what he's doing). Learning how to do the drills better. And getting some feedback on my technique. Nice to see that going hard is not an issue here. More finding the appropriate level. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! And FINALLY got in another effort on the bike. Hit the spin bike at the gym for something different than the trainer. Had meant to bring Sufferfest's Hell Hath No Fury (the 2 x 20), but iPhone somehow "lost" it during the day. Still did the 2 x 20 plus 3:20 TTT they put in after. These bikes have power. They're off, but seem somewhat consistent, so it's nice to have that for more immediate changes until HR catches up. Still kicking myself for something on Saturday's ride. Included a short section of multi-use path (MUP), but stopped to adjust something right beforehand. Didn't turn the Garmin back on, so missed a bunch of rather short hill attacks. It's not critical, but fun to see where I was at since everything is dedicated towards threshold development here. |

It's the Tallahassee Ultra Distance Classic. 50K and 50 mile distance. It's local for me and I've gone the last few years to watch friends and to help. Paved and it's 10K loops. I wanted to do 50K for turning 50 y.o. I've been stupid and crazy but I wasn't dumb enough to sign up for the 50 miler. Hubby is currently planning to come and do the last loop with me which will either be a Godsend for me or one or the other of us will kill the other. I'm not Susie Sunshine when I'm tired and p.o. And you are right....I so hate it when I forget to unpause my watch and don't get full credit for things. I'm sorry. Hope everyone has an awesome Thanksgiving! |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! 8k Turkey Trot (ie. 5 miles). 30:53. Wanted to break 30 min, but too much fatigue and too much wind (20+ mph). Monday & Tuesday's bike workouts totaled 4 hrs and did 2 x 20 + 3:20 Mon and 16 x 1 min VO2 intervals Tuesday. HR was lower than where I've run 10k's, so it was just me being more tired than I thought. Still a fun race that I'll keep in mind for the future. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! The bike is coming back around. Happy with that as it's definitely my favorite event. Anyone else using Sufferfest videos? I can do ok on my own, but these make it sooo much easier to push harder. Trainer. Sufferfest. Angels - 1 x 10 min (296), 3 x 8 min (305, 305, 305). Fight Club - 5 x 6-7 min (303, 307, 305, 310, 326). ~65% between each. They were supposed to all be consistent, but you try keeping it down when Sparticus is going for it. |

I checked out the website looks pretty cool. I went with Trainerroad. I like the fact that all I have to do is match my virtual power to the program, no thinking involved. I think they have some rides that are synced with sufferfest videos. Perhaps I'll try that after I get done Jorge's six week program. |

Extreme Veteran 1222 Tallahassee, Florida | Subject: RE: SCIFT group (Short Course is Fast Twitch)! Hope everyone had a great TG. Sounds like some good workouts. L&T, glad you finally got back some runs in. Yay!! Brigby, all I can say is dang you are fast! I've got a problem that I thought that I would ask the group. I've posted some other places and I'll schedule a massage and rest but wanted to see if by chance any one could help. Last week (Sat) on my long run, I noticed extreme tenderness at the bottom of my feet around mile 15. 'Course everything was hurting so what the hey. Ran Sun thru Wed and no pain while running. I think tho that I had some foot tenderness Wed afterwards but not sure if I'm remembering correctly. Rest day on Thurs but extreme pain around my heels. Not the heels themselves but on the outside of the foot, more intense on the inside. Friday, no pain and I went for my long run. I think the pain started at the very end (11 miles) but the pain was definitely there that evening. Rested yesterday but the pain was still there. I think it's tightness in the tendons/ligaments/something because I can feel the pain when I flex my feet so that rules out bruises, right? This morn, I flexed my feet and really felt like all was ok. Got out of bed and dang, it hurts again to walk Pain subsides the longer I'm on my feet. Decided to go to out for a run today but threw in the towel after 3 min. Any ideas?? |
