So curious, since we are talking Xterra what kind of bike does everyone ride?

Me: an old and trustworthy K2 Razorback.  Started with their first model back in 98 when I first started Xterra's, and bought their last model in 2006 before they stopped making them.

Time for an upgrade, just can't leave the ol girl!

Guam's pretty green and hilly in many parts, and very accessible, so we're very lucky to have ample training places if you have time. I only have time for the hills, which I LOVE, once during the weekend. The rest of my training is on the road with some hills. Some of the hills on the course go practically straight up and it helps to have a light bike, or good overall strength to push the bike up. That's why I've incorporated some strength training.

Bike: I ride a very inexpensive Giant Revel. Eventually it'll be replaced, but I needed a road bike for future plans so a new mountain bike had to wait.

Training: Last night was endurance day with the swim team. Basically swim till coach says to stop. I was late so only got 1600M in. New pool with chlorine. My nose went nuts. I had to take my allergy meds, but was still a snotty mess all night long. Blech! Can't wait till our old pool opens again.

Today I'm getting 4 miles in at lunch on my favorite hill, then swim team again tonight.

Happy training!

I am riding a rocky mountian vertex 2.0 (i think that's the model)(also i beleive it is a "cross country" rather then a down hill or MTB) its pretty decent it's all shimano for the drive train, running spd cleats, no rear suspension hydraulic disk breaks rear and front. I have had it for a couple of years. it just got it out on a trail last year! found out I live about 10mins from a local Nordic trail system. Definitly will be hitting those all summer for rec rides!

I ride a 2012 Specialized Rockhopper 29er. Previous to that, I'd been riding an old late 90's Giant Rincon. I'm swapping components to get it right. So far I've put a new (used) fork and swapped the front brake. Next step is probably rear brake and...I dunno.

My next bike is a road bike to train on. I've been cruising around on the mtb.

I've got a Specialized Epic Full suspension I ride for those long days in the saddle and built a superlight Chinese re-stamp of a Giant XTC carbon HT for racing.  I've been thinking about selling the Hard tail though and building a 29er.  Been staring at the deal on bikebling.com for Niner frames for days now! Sealed

come to think of it....

the fork on the Carbon bike is pretty darn plush on the trail and is only a tad over 3lbs.  I could swap that fork to the Epic, use the drivetrain/bars/seat/seat post for the new 29er build and only have to pick up a new set of wheels/fork/and disc brakes!  Then sell the carbon frame and wheels.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...........................lol!

Ok guys, I have a very silly question - you can raz me after you give me an answer. All of the beginner sprint tri training programs I've looked at combine running and swimming, and typically have biking on another day alone (unless it's a brick day, of course). Is there some reason why I can't do biking/swimming on one day and running on the other? Why does running always seem to be paired with swimming? Thanks, g

I don't think there is a particular order, most programs are flexible as long as you are getting the # of workouts and mileage, you should be fine.

This summer I would ride my bike about 10km to the pool, swim and ride back only problem is I live ontop of a big hill like 6% big lol!

I haven't followed a program because I'm never really sure when and how I'm going to get the training in. I've had swim/run bricks, and bike/run bricks because biking and running I want to strengthen knowing my swim always be my weakness. I luckily get 3x a week swim training, but I still feel like I'm going to rely on my land skills, lol!

Training yesterday was sprints and tempo with the swim team. Dang! That brought on pain from my shoulders to my quads while doing it, and today my armpits are sore too.

Afterwards we had rainbow runs up, over, and down a hill, repeat. 7 miles of that. Tough training day yesterday.

Today, biking the 1st part of Xterra course. 9 miles up the hill and back, then 4 mile run tonight.

Happy training!

In some of those "cookie cutter" plans they always put run/swim on same days.  The thought behind it is to let your lower body recover from the run, while you swim.  Bike on separate days.

No reason why you couldn't do bike/swim; or any other combination.  Sometimes when I program workouts I'll purposely mix up workouts just to add extra stress; like weights/bike/run so you can't walk for a few days.

But if your workout around your schedule mix it up as needed.

This is sooooo true.  Most bikes workouts are hard as are most swims.  Runs are mostly easy, sometimes hard so you can combine an easy run and a swim.  I still try to swim first all the time.  Sometimes it doesn't work and I have to run before hand because my gym at work doesn't have pool.  I always seem to cramp up in the pool if I bike or run first though.  Makes it hard to get a good swim in.

Thank you everyone for your replies! Very helpful & I really appreciate it. By the way, did any of you see the article in the NYT the other day about some of the things top athletes have used to improve their training? Very interesting. I have a link to it here: http://cupofg.blogspot.com/2013/01/stay-focused.html?m=0

Congrats on the weight! And meeting the tri coach! Those are good steps.

Missed my medium run tonight due to some other obligations and deciding to not let training get in the way of seeing some friends who are going away soon. I'll try to replace my short AM run with the medium run and swim in the p.m. If not...oh well! No big deal!

Gonna try to get to the mtb trails next weekend for some winter trail riding.

Leaving for a swim pretty soon here. Got a little warmup, some drills then a 1000m TT for t pacing. A little sauna after that. This weekend I've got a pool run and weight lifting tomorrow and we'll give that 3 hour trainer ride a shot again on Sunday. That's the plan anyway!, which didn't go so well last weekend! ??

Tony let's me have red wine and dark chocolate though. I think it's supposed to be in moderation so I may over do it a bit! ??
