Regular 78 Montreal, Canada | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Jay, your magellan will track speed/distance via GPS which is good. The two other measures you can get on the bike are cadence and power. Since it is ANT+ compatible, you can get an ant+ compatible cadence meter (e.g GSC10) , install to the bike and get the data on the watch. Power is a much larger investment...In any case your watch is likely to come with a mounting kit for the bike Vs keeping it on the wrist. Sounds like you are well equipped already, enjoy! PS: 17 inches here... Larry, lacking the words to describe your achievement! What is your sport background? Building such endurance in 6 months is remarkable. Steve, question on Infinit. I think I understand the notion of Osmolality from their site, but I am confused about how this jives with hydration with water only. If you drink water, would this not dilute more the Infinit in your stomach? I guess you are not supposed to hydrate solely from Infinit else you would not have mentioned about the two-chambers hydration system. Also, I understand it could contain some protein. Any risk of it being spoiled over time in the summer when it gets quite hot? Sorry if these are dumb questions, but it sounds much better than gels, and I am actually quite interested .

I got a nice 3.5 mile run in this morning. I hope everyone is having a good weekend :=) Here's a pic of some of the scenery. |

Expert 1951 | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Jim/Pam: I'd prolly freak out if I came across a snake, even a garden one. Jay: I just learned about ant myself. I got a Garmin 405cx for Christmas and I've uploaded my workout data to the Garmin sight via the ant stick that goes into the computer via the usb port. Larry: I'll have to read your story. I've my first 70.3 in 3 months and I am anxious about whether I can be ready for it. Cheyrl: I've been thinking about 2013 events as well. I have my HIM in March. I might treat April and May as off season and do a couple of sprints over the summer. There is also an fall olympic that I did in 2012 that I will prolly do again. . The name "Bermuda Challenge" sounds pretty cool. :=) |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Fred, very smart questions. Infinit is basicaly a complex sugar/salt/potasium etc. pouder that you add water to and stir for your calories. The idea is that you want your body to think of your drink as a drink and not as food. If it thinks of your drink as food it will divert blood from your muscles to your stomach and work on digesting it. For a HIM or IM, I use a triple strength mix which is 6 scoops of the pouder squished into roughly 20 oz of water = roughly 1000-1100 calories. I take 3-4 swalows of the infinit mix and chase it down with 5 swallows ish of water (depending on temerapture). So I have the infinit in the big chamber, the water in the small up front chamber and just top off the front chamber every water stop. For an IM I just grab a already mixed bottle from my special needs bag and dump it into the podiumquest. If there is any left over I put that bottle in my downtube cage for later if needed. Protien may become a problem for IM if you mix it up the night before and let it sit. I think it handles ok untill you hydrate it. I don't have protien in mine, I keep it simple. Also do not try to mix up a 2nd bottle at a water stop, it takes more time and effort than you want to put into it during a race. Hit that in the morning. Infinit has a 50% off sale in the fall around Thanksgiving... is a good time to get stocked up. Edited by Baowolf 2012-12-30 3:33 PM |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Kate, your swim looks ok, your bike miles are meh, but your run miles are reallllly low. We will see how your build goes, but keep the idea of a run walk strategy in the back of your mind for you HIM. The current strategy is to get you to the point where you can survive it at a conservative pace. If you can't run more during the week I would like to see you walking some extra miles. Your long bike rides are going to start building pretty significantly as well. At this point things are iffy for your race, you need to not miss any workouts unless it is because you are too fatigued from your build. I would have loved to have another 2-3 months to get you up to speed, but with a walk/jog strat for the run portion I think you can complete it. I'm not trying to bring you down, a HIM is a significant distance. I just want you to be ready for it. Keep me up to speed on your training so I can remember to check in on your logs and give you feedback 8). Welcome to your fiscal cliff training plan. |

Veteran 421 Los Angeles | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Hey guys, I've been lurking but wanted to introduce myself. I'm 41, married with a 3 year old daughter. Did my first IM in 2011 (the Vineman), carried that fitness level through to a lot of road races and trail races until I broke my foot last January in an Xterra Trail race. Unfortunately I was in the middle of training for IM California and didn't want to miss it so I sort of trained through the break. Finished IM Cali then everything went downhill. My foot would just not heal.. (of course...) Turned into a very bad case of Plantar Faschitis, and Itis-this and Itis-that... Been trough the ringer this year trying to heal.. Went through everything from Cortizone to ART therapy, Walking cast for 6 weeks etc... etc... Now (7 months later) I still cannot run or bike. I'm in the middle of Prolotherapy right now with Physical Therapy 2 times a week. We'll see if this works.
I'm dying to get back out there. I would just love to go on a nice run! My advice to everyone is please let your injuries heal! IM California was fun but the last year has been miserable.... I'm really enjoying lurking along with you guys... Steve really knows his stuff.
Larry - Great story. I followed you last year. Jim- I will be back. slowly but surely.... |

Extreme Veteran 1222 Tallahassee, Florida | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Mike_D - 2012-12-29 1:16 PM To those of you training for your first - I envy you. The reason is the opportunity you have to cross the finish line for the first time. To see the work you've put in, beating back doubts, sticking with it, and making through what is likely something out of your comfort zone, to do what you, and surely others, have thought undo able. Crossing that line may be one of the best feelings you ever experience. Make it happen - its worth the effort!!! +1 Beautifully said. Patrick and Larry, you guys are amazing! Gosh, I admire all of you that are training in the snow and ridiculous temps. It took me 4 hours to talk myself into going out yesterday because it was in the 50s. Jim, bunny hopping over the snake? Wish I could have seen that. You did the right thing tho because if you had tried to stop, bet you would have stopped right on him. I think that tomorrow will be a rest day for me so I can hit it hard on New Years. Hope everyone has a great new year!

Sounds like you have some lake swimming practice to look forward to. Do you have a group to train with in the OW? Kate, that looks like a beautiful place to run and ride! Glad you are getting to enjoy it. Mitch, thanks for sharing your painful story. It is so hard to shift gears from the commitment it takes to train for a big event to taking it easy and healing up. Mike, I hear you on the holiday "nutrition plan". Just back from celebrating my FIL's 94th birthday with a big meal to cap off the holiday festivus. This week begins the push upwards for me in terms of long runs. 18, 19, then 20. Today was a much needed run rest day, but I'm feeling pretty good (at least sitting here at the computer), so hoping for the best. Stepped on the scale this morning and it is definitely not going in the right direction, so I'm officially declaring holiday festivus OVER!

I took a quick look at it and it appears that I need both in order to track properly...is that right? Steve, since nutrition has been brought up already I have to ask. I use infinit already (a friend who was a triathlete introduced me to this fine product!) but how do you feel about coconut water and chia seeds? These have been two of my staples (along with salt/honey in the chia mix) and my past cramping issues have been eliminated! Larry, fantastic story! Congrats on your achievements! |

Carol why are you doing back to back 18 19 20 longs? Would be better to go 18 19 12 20 .... hrm now I have to go look at your logs. Watch your health I know your body has been iffy with this agressive build...
Jay, sorry that goes beyond my experience. I haven't had issues wtih Infinit on the bike and Gu on the run so I haven't really gone beyond that. In the last 5 miles of the IM run, sometimes I drop down to just gatoraid depending on how much water I have had to drink to keep hydrated (most IM's i have done have been in the mid to upper 90s).

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Yes, Carol, the holiday nutrition plan can sometimes be a horror show . Good luck on those upcoming long runs - you'll knock 'em out and feel great for doing it. Jay - See you @ Patriot. As for the clipless, everyone falls over at least once or more, sort of an initiation. And if you look in the BT training log under "other sports" snow shoveling is listed, so it counts! Stu - enjoy florida, and hopefully some warm weather for getting out and doing some runs and biking. Pam -- I have a hard enough time walking on trails never mind running. I can't imagine doing that without blowing out both ankles. Kate -- great views you have while out riding. Ken -- are you doing the Raleigh 70.3 HIM in June? One of my co-workers is doing it, and is psyched since he lives 1/2 mile from the finish line. Good luck!! Fred/Anthony/Brian/Neal/Melissa --- how goes it? Anyone using Trainer Road? I'm really curious about it, and would love to try it. Need a new cadence/speed sensor, but I'll likely get one to match up with my 910xt watch. Was able to get to the gym this AM and do a 5k run and then a 10x100 set in the pool. I needed to move today after yesterday's pig-out/couch potato fest. My swim times seemed a bit too fast for how miserable I felt, but hopefully my watch isn't lying to me. |

I've gotten in a 14 and a 16 LR, and here was the (latest) plan from this week forward: TTL Miles (Long Run) 47 (17.5), 43 (19) , 49 (20), 45 (12), 52 (20), 41 (12), 33 (8), 10 (marathon) I think the problem with changing that up to 18,19,12,20 is that if I want to get two 20's in, then that would push those into being back to back. How about more like this? HowTTL Miles (Long Run) 47 (18), 43 (13) , 49 (20), 45 (14), 52 (20), 41 (12), 33 (8), 10 (marathon)

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Carol I like the 2nd plan a lot better than the first one. If you were 20 years old and had not had any issues with your build I would say go with the first one. But as you were struggling a bit with the higher mileage I think you won't loose much, the 18, 20, 20 will be enough to get you a strong marathon and that one 19 is more likely to set you up for 2 crappy 20s and wories me about the mary. So I go all in on plan 2. This is a fun thing we do at the end of the year, look at 2012 totals vs 2011 totals. Remember judge against yourself and your own improvement not against others. If you don't have numbers this time around, you will next year if you keep track on BT. So I will start, all workouts are in. Unfortunately injury took what was a really great training year into missing out on the finally. Which is of course why we have a new year. Overall I am happy with things. Hopefully I get healhty enough to duplicate this for 2013.

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Ken, what are your plans for your Marathon as far as nutrition and pacing goes. I looked over your past few months of training and noticed that um you don't appear to be following a training plan and are breaking most of the rules about safely building for a marathon. You are obviously a very solid runner and 3:15 is well within your reach, but not this marathon. I have your past run weeks as this: Weekly total Long run 19 6 30 18 48 16 +5 18 7 30 16 26 20 28 16 10 6 First, don't take this the wrong way, I want you to be a better athlete by training smarter and not exposing yourself so much for injury, not criticize your training. Here are the problems. On 5 of 8 weeks your long run was more than 50% of your total weekly miles with one week it was 76% of your weekly miles. You also have a 12 mile run following one of your long runs, which should have been a 3-4 mile recovery run. You jumped up too much for your long runs, you should never jump up more than 2 miles and typically only 1 mile for your long runs unless it is following a recovery week. Your weekly builds are way too much in November going from 19 to 30 to 48 then droping down to 30 or below during your peak build weeks. You have 1 20, where someone with your running skills should have 3x 20 in the last 6 or so weeks before taper. So you are really exposing yourself to a lot of potential injury and not getting in good shape for your marathon. You have enough base to complete the marathon for sure, and you have a lot of ability that you are floating on. Did you have some injuries or what was going on to prevent you from having a consistent build? I would be hard pressed to pick a pace for your marathon, maybe in the high 7s to low 8s, but given your training if you go into the 7s too far you risk blowing up on the last 6 miles. Let me in on whats been going on so I can understand it better. |

Veteran 439 Dartmouth, Massachusetts | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Thanks for the input Steve. To be clear, I don't have any issues with Infinit or GU's but what I've discovered is that I'm a heavy salter and GU's don't have enough sodium for me. I started using a chia gel/honey/sea salt mixture in place of GU's and that has worked well. For those who have used the training log (I just set some of mine up last night), how is the nutrition section? I was going to use MyFitnessPal for calorie tracking but if the BT one isn't bad, I'll give that a shot.
