I am thinking like the soft sports that I do: yoga, golf, and stretching. What about lifting weights or power walking? I log everything I do that I consider a workout. But gosh, how do you have time for power walking & golf when you have to run, bike & swim everyday? JK |

Haven't done either for a while although my doc tells me I need to do the strength training, especially core and lower body. He says it will help with the problems I have with my hips so I guess I need to find a way to work it back into the schedule. |

New user 111 | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, CLOSED! soccermom15 - 2013-05-15 12:52 AM I need an opinion from the Beasties. I'm supposed to be just doing easy workouts this week with my tri coming up this weekend. I signed up for summer speedwork with the LRS (this will be my 3rd year doing it) and the first session is on Thursday. Not sure if I should go. I know it's "speedwork" but the first session is an easy one, just getting us into the groove of running on the track. It's 8x400 at 10k pace - which for me is about a 3 min loop, so no real speed involved. I don't really think that it will hurt me for Sunday's race but thought I'd see what you guys think. Would you do it or skip it? i usually take a day or two off before a race. if you feel strong enough to do the speedwork on Thursday, go for it. |

Janet, I agree with the masses, I think you should be fine doing the speedwork on Thursday so long as you don't flatten yourself, and take it easy on Friday and Saturday. Jigger - 2013-05-14 6:21 PMI was going to put on my HRM on last night when I was watching the hockey game. Ha ha And I thought I was anal about logging acitivity - I've been known to wear my heart while cleaning house and yes, while mowing the lawn, but never to someone else's sporting event ;P |

I have had a tough week with work, my crazy sinuses, tinnitus and a concussion during a soccer game but that is all in a days work for a beastie.I posted my painfully slow race report on my first sprint Tri that turned into a biathlon with the bad weather. The good, I finished and my soccer game later that day got canceled. The bad, we waited an hour in the sixty degree rain for our group to swim. The water was closer to fifty degrees, I swallowed a lot of water at the start and didn't burp it out until the run was almost over. I couldn't put my head under the water or actually take a full breath as my body was in shock for the whole swim. I still had a blast and can't wait to participate when my body is not exhausted from over training.Keep up the good work beasties and remember, you can't fail or succeed if you don't try. |

Veteran 622 Roll Tide!! | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, CLOSED! OMG!!! BEARS!!! I want to say how awesome, but know they can be dangerous. I have a neice in Alaska who gets cool stuff in her yard (moose mostly). We are rural but we have dogs that keep everything run off for the most part. Dee: I love it, Grits for pre-race meal, you are a southerner!! Your race times were great- especially considering you had problems with the swim and the conditions were not normal on the run. I think it was a pretty good race and you will do excellent under normal conditions. One thing: the race report said pool swim, but it said waves?? Need to go get a run in before work!! Do you all ever just feel tired???? |

Congrats Dee on the ALMOST triathlon, somehow I pictured they had cancelled the swim, that's usually the part that goes due to cold/lightning etc. But you finished in spite of coming out of the water a human icicle!! Watch that concussion, might be time to take a few rest days, and good that you are scheming your training for your next race! |

Hildebeast - 2013-05-14 12:02 PM I think you should be okay if it's on Thursday... don't go full out, and then take it easy or take 2 rest days before Sunday and you should be fine. I have a hard time taking things easy, so if you kill it, you might end up paying for it with tired legs for the race! x2 given that your race is on Sunday. |

I was lucky. I swam into the top 'hardish' part. The tentacles only hit my shoulders and arms. That said...my face was kind of numb for about 30 minutes. The worst part of this incident was that I was so startled that both my calves cramped up. So there I was about 50 yards offshore with very limited use of my legs. Once I got myself together I headed right in. Was pretty scary...so no more OWS training unless it is an organized event with lots of kayak/other coverage. |

I just read your race report. Really not a bad run time given the race conditions! Sounds like a really cold swim. Still you had good time...that is the most important part! |

It is nice to know that there are still pockets of wilderness where we don't expect them. |

Expert 972 Falls Church | Subject: RE: HILDEBEAST'S Mentor Group, CLOSED! So I just took a quick peak at the Athlete's Guide for my race on Sunday (Columbia Triathlon). It is a big race and I will have to rack my bike on Saturday. There will be some pros there. I think I will time my bike drop-off for the meet and greet session. Maybe I can get a pic with Leanda Cave (current Ironman champ). The best part...my swim wave is 5 out of 18! 1st the pro men, pro women, the elite amateurs, 55+ men, then my group!!!. The 45+ women names A-L. Whoohoo!!! This means a pretty completely clear bike course. Very much fun. Although towards the latter half of the bike...all of the rest of the field starts passing us!

I am home for lunch and just took a quick nap. I am exhausted. I feel like i have hit a wall or something.... I was pretty fatigued for yesterday's bike but pushed through and did not feel like running this morning but knew it was my only time to do it. I don't feel like I am over training & I am afraid to slack up with 2 1/2 weeks till race. Could be my thyroid (I'm slightly hypothyroid) which i deal with naturally. Could be some other stupid hormones which all seemed to go crazy after age 45 or maybe I'm just tired- but I have been getting plenty of sleep & eating really clean(except that handful of chocolate chips I just downed) grrrr I don't have time to be tired.... |

OMG, TMI TMI!!!!!! That is too funny, Janette!!! You will have to log it as pizza! You'll know what I mean if you get around BT a good bit! Melody, don't worry if you are slacking off a bit... not much more you can do with a couple of weeks, most of your fitness is in the bank, but you CAN injure yourself or get so exhausted you make yourself sick. So don't feel bad if you cut back on training or even take a few total rest days.... You have Hildebeast's permission! |
