I can't even remember what it feels like to sleep late on the weekends, wake up, have a cup o' joe, hang out on the sofa with the pooch and do whatever the heck I feel like.   I vaguely remember the days of having a clean and tidy house and a clean vehicle.   I can almost recall the faces of my family members in my mind...

We are all so on the same page here! The alarm clock has become my enemy....A 7 to 8 hour training day on Saturday....3 to 4 hours on Sunday....no wonder we are all worn out.
I am told that when we start taper, our legs will come back and so will energy. Man, I sure hope so! 8 hours off sleep, when I can get it, just is not enough these days, it seems.
This is my last long week...
Started making the lists for things to pick up to have in Florida.
Are we allowed a night out for a beer when we get there or is that breaking pre-race training discipline????
We've come this far....not much more to go 32 days....16 hours....

Surprinsgly I have more energy now.  For ahwile I was really sturggling.  But I'm eating much more and I think that's really helped.

I am also starting to put together a list of everything.  I think it would be good idea if we shared our lists to make sure we don't forget anything- especially those of us who haven't done an IM before.  I'm worried about not thinking about putting something in my special needs and then needing it during the race!

Here's a start from the slowman himself.  He makes a very good list of bike stuff, even if it might be a little overkill.  Just a little, though.

http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/features/ironman/ironready.h... is anyone else paranoid that the weather will be lousy, ala IMWI? My clothing packing list is HUGE as a result. I could race from FL to WI and back with the crap I'm taking.

My friend who did the race last year said he wore a vest on the start of the bike it was still cool out. He also swims in 1 hour, so it would be cool out! I remember being in Panama City for Spring Break back in 1992 and it was pretty cool unless you were sheltered from the wind and in the sun. But that was March. Comming from a northern climate I think will be ok. My other friend who did the race last year said on the marathon, he was still using sponges to cool off while the locals were going for the mylar blankets. Too funny!

I recommend insulated lunch sacks for your special needs bags to keep your stuff cool. We did this at IMLP and it worked great.

Also on a sad note, I THINK I am bailing from IMFL. I'm bummed out about it. But something is going on with me and I can't train for more than an hour. I am working on it with my doctors and hope to be getting back in the saddle soon. But feel that I've lost too much training to do IMFL well if at all. The jury is still out and I will let you all know my final decision.

BTW- you are all doing great! Keep it up!

Thanks- I'll check out that list.  I'm am preparing for any type of weather.  I remember reading is someone's race report from IM WI about having aponcho in their runs special needs bag.  I plan to bring one with me and if the weather looks like it might be crappy on race day I'll throw it into my special needs.  I think I'll bring my arm warmers too just in case it's chilly on the bike as well as some other "just in case" clothes!

Jeanne,
So sorry about the injuries! Don't give up yet on IM Fla! It still may happen for you.

A couple of things that I was told to put in Special needs bag- bike:
A frozen bottle of your normal energy drink. For me, its Accel- the insulated bike bottles should keep it nice and cold by the time I get there. Also, a peanut butter sandwich.
I wear contacts, so I am putting a spare pair in my bike transition bag, just incase I lose one in the water- it would be over if I did not have my contacts! Plus small bottle of eye drops, chap stick, large black plastic garbage bag in the Run sn bag. That will help if its raining or cold/windy. Baggie with Bandaids, small sample of body glide or some kind of lubricant, aleve or tylenol, a couple of Immodiam...just in case! And call me crazy, I am also putting a small travel toothbrush and tooth paste in both bike and run sn bag. I will still have my bottom braces on and UGH, sorry, gotta do at least a quick 30 second brush down once or twice in 14 hours!!! I'll also have a bottle of water in my T1 bag and bandana or old towel to rise the salt water off my face or whatever. I carry one bandana with me when I run- for nose blowing. Sorry, just can't do that other thing on the bike or run that guys can do.

Don't forget to mark EVERYTHING! With your name and your race number. Also reflector tape for your shoes, your clothes, put on the corners of your race number.
There are web sites to check water temp- and of course the weather channel for race day conditions. Better safe than sorry- put what you can in the car, or pack for plane to have with you. I need to get a pair of the arm warmers. I hear they are great to use because you can just roll them down when it gets warm.
So much to do!!!

Great list!

I'm also putting spray sunblock in my bike sn bag.  I'm so worried about getting toasted out there even though it's in November I'll still be in the sun for awhile on the bike.

Also don't forget to put some extra CO'2 cartridges and extra tube/tire in your bike sn bag just in case you you need 2.

On Saddles for the ladies- I have been having 'issues' with my old saddle. Being in a tri-specific racing bike, down in aero position for longer than normal, getting ready for the Ironman, well my old saddle just did not cut it. On Jeanne's recommendation, I bought a new one- Terry Butterfly Gel Gelissima. It solved all issues! It's wonderful and I love it. It is designed for the female who is riding those long distances and down in aero bars.
I know we are getting close and maybe too close to be changing things, but if any of you females is having bad problems with your saddles such that you can't race in yours, I highly recomment this one. Broke it in with an 80 mile ride and no problems at all

I hope you all know that you can pick up your special needs and transition bags after the race. This is why it is important to mark your bag with your name as well as the sticker IM gives you in your packet. So don't wory about losing a bottle or jacket, you can get them back.

I wore a fuel belt that had a lot of reflective materials so I didn't worry about the tape. Buy that tape up here though, down at the race site it will cost you dearly!

If anyone has any other questions, fire away! I want to share my knowledge so you won't be so freaked out and can have more fun.

Jeanne- did you find having your own fuel belt was helpful for the run?  I am still trying to decide if I want to carry my own fluids or just deal with what's offered on the course.  I'm not sure at that point if I'll care or not.  I'm just worried if I bring my own I'll get sick of having it butif i don't have it I'll wish I did- you know how that goes

Ok, my friend just talked me back into the race...but I'm still sitting on the fence. I ran 9.6 miles on Wednesday and felt awesome! I was out for my standard 10K route when I ran into hubby on my mile 5, his mile 1...he said, "come with me, its only an extra 1.5 miles" My brain didn't bother to compute the distance. I felt good so i said, "OK!" I didn't have any gels and I just ran 9.6 miles in 1:39! The week befre I did 10 hilly miles in 2:03 and felt really really bad.

I have aluded to some medical issues that would keep me out of the race. I still don't know what is going on and just got a cryptic message today from my doctor asking me to call her to discuss some test results. We are also waiting to re test some blood levels next week.

So, aside from that this weekend I am going to hike 12 miles in the catskills and then do a century ride on Sunday. I got new gearing on my bike (compact 50-36 Whoo Hoo!)

Keep your fingers crossed!

Um, this is funny because the exact thing your are worried about happened to me. I was doing great with my fuel belt. I use Hammer Nutrition and had no choice but to carry my own. Somehow I stopped using it and switched to the chicken broth at Lake Placid and ran out of gas. I should have stayed with the Hammer system. I would not have had to walk miles 19-21 and would have done a sub 15 hour race!

I think you need to use what works for you, what you have been training with and yes, be diligent enough to use it the entire time even if that is 15 hours. What is most important is to eat even if you don't feel like you need to! I switched up flavors so i wouldn't get bored or burn out on my nutrition.

I set my watch to beep every 15 minutes so I could eat and stretch on the bike. It really helped because I didn't have to eat as much as I would evey 30 minutes and it was easier digesting and I had a more consistient energy level. (except for when my brain stopped working and I didn't eat it anymore on the run, DOH!). Then on the run I ate every aid station. Which I will change for the next time....I will stay on my schedule.

I highly recommend making your nutrition the night before and freezing your 2nd bottles or getting an insulated lunch bag for special needs to keep stuff cool. It will be sitting out in the sun!

Hope this helps! Happy Friday!

Thanks Jeane- after reading what you just wrote, I will most likely bring my own fluids for the run, as much as I don't want to.

I hope you can make it down to IM FL!!  I hope everything works out for you!

Speaking of food and fluid, What is going to be offered at the race?

I was on the website, and it said gaterade endurance, and GU gels. I thought powerbar was one of the sponsors, and assumed powergels would be the gels offered. I tried GU on my last long run. Didn't like the taste very much.

Also, we don't have access to gatorade endurance where I live. Is there much difference in that, and regular gatorade, either premixed, or powder?

The Gatorade Endurance has a LOT more salt (which is good for folks like me), but may not agree with your stomach if you aren't used to a high-salt-content drink.

It's funny, Janelle, I haven't even been using eFuel on my runs at all.... haven't even been using eGel lately. Just water and Shot Bloks or Nutter Butters.... I know that in the PAST eGel has worked fine, but now that I actually think about it, I haven't been "practicing" my running with it. I think I'm not going to use a Fuel Belt.... and take a little Gatorade on the course if it strikes my fancy, but otherwise stick to water, eGel (which I'll cary with me) and the other food they have to nibble on on the course. Oh and I'll pack some Nutter Butters... can't forget them now!

I think it tastes different, and I like it.  I think I like it b/c of the additional sodium, but who knows.  It's kinda late in the game to start something new, but if you want to give it a shot you can order it from all3sports.com.

http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=gatorade-endurance-formula

I am not associated with all3sports.com in any way other than being a very happy customer of theirs.  I like them b/c their shipping is very cheap and ground shipping gets to me overnight.  They ship to canada, but no telling how much UPS charges for that.  If you're thinking of taking GE off the course, you probably want to give it a shot soon to see if your stomach likes it because it IS different.

Meanwhile I'm disturbed that I'm doing a long ride tomorrow and it will only be a few degrees warmer here in NC than in St. John's.  I live in the South for a reason.  Now warm up!

I am waiting for Monday to let it get up to a balmy 16 deg celcius. Monday is Thanksgiving north of the border. Yes really, in October. Actually since I lived in Texas, I celebrate it twice.

Anyway, the plan is to do a race simulation. Up and eat at about 4:30 like race day, then at the pool by 7:00, and start a short swim by 7:30, I think thats race time. The a 5 to 6 hour ride, followed by a 30 to 45 min run.

Autumn has been good to us up here. Except for a couple of hurricanes, been sunny and warm. Hope florida is the same.

Hi Gang! I just watched the Ironman Arizona coverage this afternoon and got really psyched up for the race again! Whether or not I'll finish is another thing, but I'm in agin. ( I think) LOL!
Happy training! Going to ride tomorrow since I've got the day off!

Please tell me this is normal...

I'm just ready for my IM training to be over.  I'm tired of training and waiting for the "big event."   I honestly will go crazy if I have to do another long bike or swim- which I have coming up this weekend and next week.  I'm ready to live a normal life and not worry about training.

Anyone else feel this way??

Yes you are totally normal! I bet you don't feel any better, right? LOL.
Can you go ride with friends or do something else that would make training fun and different? Any charity rides or races going on next weekend?

Don't think about what you have to do...that will depress you more. Visualize crossing the finish line, the cheering crowd and how awesome you will feel. That is your focus! Go do some yoga or go for a pretty trail run. Mix it up and keep it fresh.
If you have lost weight go buy yourself something new to wear that is a celebration of your hard work and new figure!

Also, when I get like this I find it helpful to watch videos or ironman race coverage on tv.

Make sure you are sticking with your vitamins and supplements too! Stay healthy!

Hey Mitch.

How was the ride this weekend?

Despite our forcast of Sunny and 13 deg C, it was overcast, and felt like -13. I ventured out for the ride, after a quick swim. I wore a few layers, but left my booties at home. I had a slight headwind, maybe about 20 clicks for the first half of the ride, that came with a brutal wind chill.

But I finished it, so now, recovery week, then peak.

Hope everyone can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Won't be long now.

I was wondering if anyone else felt the lack of motivation too. I had a great MS150 bike tour ride this past weekend, plenty of inspiration to ride for those with MS. It was tough on the my legs and Monday, Tuesday and still some on Wednesday, I felt so worn out, and my legs were so fatigued. My Tuesday night spin and run was just misrable. If I had been a 5 year old, I would have been throwing a temper tantrum sreaming "I DON' T WANT TO DO THIS ANYMORE!!". I vasilate between knowing how blessed I am to be able to do this IM, knowing how special, unique, exciting it will be racing and finishing and being so tired and just wanting the race here and be done with it. I guess it helps to know a lot of the rest of you are in the same place and read advise from folks like Jeanne who have IM experience.
So....lets gear up all....dig a little deeper, know that in 22 days we will all be on our bikes peddling our way along a 112 mile course in fablous weather
Maybe watch for our favorite folks racing in Kona in the mean time. One of our triathletes from Jackson, MS will be racing there.
Stay safe all!

Mine seemed equally as brutal.  We did 116m (185k) in a light rain with temps between 45 and 55F (7-12C).  It absolutely sucked. Then today it's sunny and in the mid 70s, only to go back to being unseasonably cool next weekend.  I'm ready to be done!

I think workouts sound better in metric.  Yeah, I did 185 on the bike in 12 degree weather this weekend, that's just how studly I am.
