ironannekidd - 2010-01-29 4:52 AM So I'm thinking about doing a few triathlons this summer Ghoulies.

What do you think about that idea?

Go for it! As long as they're races you'll have fun with and that you can afford, go and have a blast!

yeah.. I was kidding. I'm planning on Black Bear Oly, which is 3 weeks after the PGH HM. Then a sprint the end of July, another Oly in August, the RNR HM in Virginia Beach the beginning of Sept, and the Marine Corps Marathon in October. Probably a few local 5k's as well.

Sounds like a great summer! Can't wait to read all the RR's!

Yeah!  Ann has a plan.

Way to go on doing the Oly at Black Bear.  I have some training buddies that may be doing it as well, so I may be a sherpa or a volunteer.

I haven't registered yet, that's on my list of things to do this weekend.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE THERE! I may need a sherpa, too.

Get yourself registered!  CGI races fill up pretty quickly.  As for sherpa support....YOU GOT IT.   My training friends call me "the mechanic" because I'm pretty good at solving bike issues and am very speedy at changing flats.  I've also been called Mary Poppins because of how much *spare stuff* I have in my transition bag.  I will make sure you are covered and can concentrate on racing.

OK! I DID IT!!! I am registered for the Black Bear Olympic Tri!!!

I NEED TO GET MY SWIM ON!!!

There's nothing quite like a race to get you motivated to train!  Congrats on registering!

I've been saying training starts Monday. Now it really does!

Nice!  I've been saying for months that ironman training starts Feb 1.  I just need to get a training plan drawn up this weekend Surprised

The thing I don't like about the plans is they're in minutes. I would really prefer to have them say go this many miles. I need to work on a custom plan this weekend to try and translate the minutes to miles, and overlap the HM run miles with the Oly training plan. I'll bike and swim the Oly plan but run the HM plan.

When is your IM?

I always make my plans in miles that way I know I'm trained for the distance.  Creating training plans is quite fun, IMHO.  My summer is usually chock full of so may races that a cookie cutter plan won't remotely work for me.  I think I did a good job managing my training/racing last year.  I think everyone should learn how to customize their own plans

IM is Sept 13, 32 weeks away!

So my timing must be just right tonight--I was just coming in to ask your oppinions about my training plan. I am at a loss as to what to do. Here's the scoop:March 7th, Indoor tri at Lifetime Fitness (swim/bike/run in the club for a set amount of time, winner is the one who goes the farthest)April 17th, Half marathon--maybe--pending cooperation from the shin splints.May 8th, Longer distance bike event--maybe 60 miles?May 22nd, sprint tri--already registeredJune 5th, century bike ride (yay!)--registration opens next weekthen it gets a little foggy:June 26th, open water sprint--maybeAugust 7th, Battle at Midway, olympic distance? (I'm scared)--maybeAugust 14th, sprint tri (if I don't do the oly at BAM, or I skip BAM all together)--maybeSo aside from picking and choosing which races, I have NO IDEA what to do about my training. I need help! Do I pick an olympic level plan, but superimpose the half mary run training into it; or do I pick a longer distance training plan and change the swim training down to allow for the run and bike race, then ramp up the swim in June/July? I am basically starting from zero right now--maybe 2 workouts/week for the past few months. And shin splints which MIGHT be on their way out if I baby the run training. I have a bke and trainer at home, gym membership (for the pool and treadmills...and weights). So, what say the Gouhlies? How do I approach my training for this season?

Wow Amy, busy summer!

I'm probably not the best person to ask for advice on training around all of these events, but since it's a free country I'll give you my opinion anyway!

First off, I'd definitely focus your running towards the HM distance. Hal's plans might be a bit much since they're 5 days/week, but I'd think using the long Sunday run from those plans with at least two other runs per week would be good.

For the swim and bike an Oly plan sounds like it would get the job done, but I would add some longer bike rides in April to prepare for the 60 miler in May.

Best of luck figuring this out. At least if you lose the internet again you can have some fun with a calendar figuring all out your training plans!

ironannekidd - 2010-01-25 2:59 AM

Good morning everyone!

I had a big, at least for me anyway, weekend in the pool. I think I started a bad habit though. On Saturday I had some serious issues with taking in a lot of water through my nose, so Sunday I wore nose plugs. I felt better, but I'm not sure it's something I should be doing or not.

I've also started doing some yoga. I got up at 0350 this morning to get in a 20 minute yoga program before I jumped in the shower. I didn't sleep well at all last night so this may not have been the best of ideas. I'm also not very bendy

Have a slam dunk day everyone!!!

did you say 350?? in the AM???? WOW! Early but very impressive!

Um, yes Jules, I have started some of my days at 3:50 in the AM so I can do yoga before I get ready for work.

and so that means you are in bed at 7 pm to get all that beauty rest, right???

that is craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy early!! Do you feel that it has helped? is there any change in the morning or your day since you have been doing this?

I wish! Usually in bed anywhere between 8:30 and 10:30. I don't sleep well so I'm not really missing anything.

I actually do think I felt better the days I got up and did it. I have tons of stess and I felt less stressed the mornings I did yoga. I'll pay attention and see if that trend continues.

so what is stressing you? home life? work? financials? BT Ghoulies post padding posting very intriguing training stories? me asking you silly questions?

I have to get at least 7 hours sleep...I dont see how you function with so little sleep!???

Some of those yes, some of those no.

I would like to get more sleep. I need to get more sleep. Most nights I just can't turn my head off long enough to fall asleep. If I do sleep if something wakes me up, then I'm up. I've had days that start at 1:00 in the morning because I'd have to get up with a kid or something and then I'm up.

That's why I prefer miles, too.

If I'm moving uber slow some day I won't go far in 32 minutes. If I know I have to go 5 miles though, I'll go 5 miles no matter how long it takes.

I would rather be over prepared than under anyway. So today and tomorrow I'll figure it out.

32 weeks! You've got time!

Good morning everyone!

My original plan for today had me already in the pool by now. Oh well.

I'm heading out in a few. Going to swim swim swim.

I'm hoping it's at least in the 20's by the time I get home so I can go for a run. I really don't want to run on the treadmill.

Have a great day.

I'll check back later.

Morning Ghoulies.
We still have power but no bets on how long. Got lots of wet wet snow and now it is sleeting.
My poor car has tree limbs all around it. Looks like the trees were taking aim. Poor thing. I am gonna dig it out an plow to the middle of the field if I can move the limbs.

Amy, no comments on training plans from me. I am still trying to figure all that out myself.

Ann(e) Go Black Bear..

Bill and Tom, Stacie and Jules and Katy have great days...

Did you hear Neal is going an IRONMAN!!

off to gather stuff for painting and move tree limbs. And make LOTS more coffee while the power is still on.

That is a crazy schedule indeed.  With the early HM and longer bike events my thoughts would be to pick up the bike and run portions of an HIM plan and do enough swimming to get you through the sprints.  How is that June century ride?  If it is pretty casual with frequent stops then you could conceivably get through it without doing any long rides past 60 miles.  If you want to fare a little better then add in some longer rides up to 80 miles.

The nice thing about biking is that your body can handle a big jump in distance without much risk of injury.  In training for my second HIM last summer I had a long ride of 80 miles in July.  I didn't bike much in August, but did a solo century the beginning of September for the heck of it and handled it fine.

After your century you should look at getting your swim volume up to handle the oly distance while maintaining the bike and run fitness you gained leading up to that.

Woke up today with a bit of a sore throat and continued chest congestion...boooooo....So now the question is do I suck it up and go for my hour easy run or do I laze around...hmmm?....The type A neurotic athlete in me tells me to go run (this will be Melissa) and the Doctor in me tells me to not (this will be Mindy)...hmmmm....do I let Melissa be a non-compliant patient which drives Mindy nuts?

I think I'll wait till after lunch anyways...a few more hours for the inner fight to continue...

Public Service Announcement: If is 17 degrees outside and there is a breeze, and you go swimming, then you go outside for a run, you might want to dry your hair before you head out.

I am going to go crawl inside the woodstove now and try to thaw out. There is frost in my hair.

iowagander - 2010-01-29 9:13 PM Neal - with your IMMOO preps getting set to get underway, I assume you've been reading and rehearsing this?

Oh yes.  I completed phase 1 in February when I signed up.  I'm so glad that the official plan is starting up so I can get phase 2 under way

Sweet. Glad to see you're not neglecting this key part of your preparations. Just make sure you do the one where you knock on your neighbor's door just to tell them you don't have time to talk because you're training for an ironman at least three times. I think that's my favorite.

Ouch! Thanks for the advice though. I'll keep that filed in case I ever go visit my family in Minnesota during the winter.

Thanks Ann.  It's 16 out and I'm about to head out for my run.  I'll resist the urge to wash my hair until afterwards
