evening everyone.. back from swim/run... didn't acutally flail at the water too bad...

running question... is it normal for my shins to hurt when i run? (not really shins but more the muscle)

I believe those are shin splints.  I get them sometimes.  When I do I usually repeat the mileage for the week or scale it back a bit.  Does it hurt if you try to press your thumb in between the muscle and the bone.

nope .. the shin splints that i've had in the past have been more over the bone.. this is more muscle pain... doesn't hurt at all now... and doesn't hurt if i'm doing 4mph or less...

I was going to ask why you didn't offer to give hot couch-hopping girl a place to sleep.  You didn't even have to offer the guest room.  Could have just closed the door to that room and told her it was a utility closet or something.

TOTALLY let that opportunity pass me by.

I should have said "I don't want to be amongst the squids for..." I lost my hard riding edge last year when a friend of mine passed me on the right in my lane on a slight left handed turn. He got off in the gravel, high sided 10 feet in front of me, and then cleared the road and cartwheeled through the embankment for 200 yds. He, amazingly enough, walked away with a sprained ankle. I had a hard time with it because after watching him get tossed around like a rag-doll, I was pretty sure he died. Since then, I haven't really ridden much. I may have failed to mention he was WFO in 6th gear when he bit it, I was pushing about 120 in 4th.

Wow. For me, if I got a sport bike, it would be for the track ONLY. Too many crazies and uncertain conditions on public streets. I've read/seen enough horror stories. On the track, you at least generally know the intientions of the guy in front of you.

This is what I have

http://www.mcnews.com.au/Wallpaper/Triumph/SprintST/2005/sprint_st_silver_rhf_1024.jpg

It's a sport touring bike.  1050cc 3cyl engine.  123hp 78ft-lbs of tq about 500lbs.

It may be normal, but it's probably not good. Does it hurt more the more you run, or does it hurt when you start running and then go away as your legs warm up?

its more that it hurts as i run.. mostly at the faster speeds... if i'm walking fast doesn't hurt...

Slow down. Or maybe try a run/walk combo. At your mileage, most of the people on BT (especially Scout and amiine) would say that you should be doing anything fast. Besides what's in your logs do you have much of a running background/base?

Oh man, those Triumphs are pretty. I actually entertained the though tof getting one of their 600s for a few minutes, until I thought about having to pay for it.

If you learn to REALLY drive it, you can make those fools on the Busas look slow. They're just a bunch of highway/strip queens anyway.

Yeah, so am I. A little mini tank. That's why I try to be careful with building up my running and doing the run/walk thing. Even if I was at 15% BF I would still have about 20-25 lbs easy on the elite distance runners my height. My body wasn't really built for running, but I do like cruising along at a comfortable pace. Actually that's pretty much how I feel about most sports.

I'd recommend trying the run/walk and seeing what you think. But first get those legs rested. I find that my running recovery time is much slower when I'm running and biking together (I have weak calves). Also, some people use "The Stick" to work out those muscles.

Mine isn't quite that pretty anymore. Needs new plastics from a garage drop on the right, and from not making sure the kickstand was fully down and locked when I ran back to see if my friend was still alive. But I think it gives it character. Just that that character is making it harder to sell now.

ETA: The one my friend wrecked:

He thought he could go faster than me on a road he didn't know when I was getting close to scraping hard parts.

Schwamm, 'stix, are those microbrews?  I don't think that there's much microbrewerying in Iowa.  There's a local winery but there wine isn't very good.  They have a sangria-like drink (the Spanish girlfriend of fellow grad student insists that it's not sangria) is pretty tasty though.  They have live music on Sunday, which is about as good as much $0-3 live music can be.

There are a bunch of microbreweries here in the Quad Cities.   I'm taking the new girl to dinner at one tomorrow (they also have good food and an upstairs with pool tables and darts if we want to hang out beyond dinner, but not so late as to make me miss the opening of the two transition areas for my race (it's a point to point race)).

I know many TANners don't venture into TriTalk land very often, but there is a lot of good info in there.  The prevailing thought is that speed intervals shouldn't be attempted until you have a significant miles per week (18-20+) and a decent amount of time running (injury free).  The recommendation for people below that amount is all low intensity with volume increasing no more than 10% per week (this is a pretty common golden rule), with a decrease in volume every couple of weeks for recovery.  I've tried it and it's been working for me.  Are you using a plan to train for your race(s)?

The stick is a self massage tool

http://www.thestick.com/

I have one, it works...although I think doing Yoga to help permanently lengthen and stretch those muscles is helping more.

The Dark Master has taught you well.

But 'tis true. And the only way for you to run more, right now, is to run LESS, and then when you do run, run SLOWLY.

That way, you can run more.
