I've tried taking 1-2 months off of swimming after my last race of year and it has never worked well for me. I'd take a break then start back with private swim lessons to try and get rid of my old bad habits. I'd work mostly on technique. It would take me 3-4 months to get back to my old times. I tried that 4 years obviously it didn't work for me.

I'm a slow swimmer. This year I decided to take a different approach and was in the pool within 10 days of my IM and started working on improving feel of the water and speed. I did set a 5 year old PB in my 50 in January. I suspect if I can working with the Finding Freestyle folks I will be faster this year in my IMs.

Last year I swam 4x a week instead of 3x a week most weeks starting December 2009. I came out of the water fresher at IMFL and about 6 minutes faster despite not really getting faster in sets.

I've tried no swimming and it doesn't work for me.

Yes, I agree (and I believe EN states) it isn't for everyone.  Like a lot of triathlon training/racing, the "your milage may vary" caveat applies to their advice

As a BOP swimmer, I can't imagine taking any time off from swimming. I also really enjoy swimming. Even though swimming isn't my best sport it is probably my favorite. Which is probably because there is always something to learn. Swimming with masters was very enjoyable and amusing. I just thought freestyle was hard until I tried to swim the other strokes!

I think the beauty of triathlon is that there are 3 different sports. There is always something to work on in each area. I love training and can't imagine not being able to workout. There is rarely a day that I don't look forward to my workouts. The few times that has happened we know if it is time for me to take a break and regroup.

Fred Doucette - 2011-03-09 5:52 PM So, what have you folks given up to allow training for triathlon?

HMMM? Sleep? Not really. I just go to bed earlier. Although I do miss sleeping in on the weekends but don't want to miss out on the best training time. Really I guess what I give up most is flexibility. But, I give up the flexibility so I can go to soccer games and do other family things I enjoy. So, what I am willing to give up is the flexibility in training. Now, I am willing to get up and do a 5am workout so I can go to a soccer game or cross country meet in the evening.  Fortunately, on most days I have enough flexibility in my job that I can also workout at lunch on those 2 workout days.   It's all a balance-I adjust my training (which I enjoy very much) so that I don't miss out on important family time and events.

Randy

Sorry for the screwy format but I'm going to bed.

75' run with easy 45' spin to help with leg recovery

Plus I need to finish up packing and getting things set at home when I'm gone.

Checked Federal Express tracking and my bike left CT yesterday morning after sitting there 1.5 days. The current estimate for delivery is Monday as opposed to Friday which is what I was told when I booked the shipment.

Interesting swim today at lunch.  Pool heater has been out for 10 days.  Attendant said temp. was 72-73 degrees. Last Thursday it was 76 degrees. Today, I almost bailed but decided I would at least give it a shot. Water was certainly cool but not intolerable. Was able to get a decent workout in. I was the only person in the pool and the attendant said there had only been 2 people in the pool all day.

Curious, what is the water temperature at the pool where you swim?  Not sure but I suspect it is in the mid 80's if not a bit higher where I usually swim.

Same happened at my pool last December/January.  They "forgot" to tell us too, so I went in and froze.  At even at the upper 70's it was unbearable to me.  When it's been at 85-86 now, I'm in heaven.  Recently, they've lowered it to low 80's and I'm not pleased.
