Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Everyone-back from a nice weekend at the beach. Long run yesterday where legs just never came around and I really felt beat up despite trying to keep it real easy . 45 minute run today and legs felt much better. Back in the pool tomorrow. Can't decide whether I should be motivated by these great swimmers at the Olympics or feel hopelessly inadequate Michael/d3-great race. Congrats on the PR! Our "Summer" is winding down. Son has to be at college on 8/11 for 10 days of preseason workouts before classes start. Daughter starts her senior year in HS on 8/13. Should be a busy Fall. Right now we are just trying to get daughter through tomorrow when she has her wisdom teeth out. Randy |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jamie-"good" snacks. I'm probably the wrong person to comment on this as my willpower is almost nonexistent. When I'm trying to be good I'll eat babay carrots when I need something to munch on. I also will sometimes eat Low Fat Pop Tarts in the evening instead of grabbing cookies or something sweet. Not a great alternative but calories are lower than cookies and I still get the sweet/cookie fix I need. Randy |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jimmy Buffett concert at Comerica Park in Detroit last night. It was a lot of fun. Lionel Ritchie opened and played all his hits. A good time was had by all. Not too many healthy snacks at the multi hour preshow tailgate. I felt good enough this morning to get in my long run so no major damage done ![]() It sounds like most of us had a pretty good weekend. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael, you rock! Breaking the 20 mph barrier is exciting!! Great job! I had a good weekend volume wise. 87 miles biking including a brick run mixed in, and today 17.2 mile run. Had to break it up (10.5 miles, then 6.7 miles) but got right back where I left off and ran the final 6.7 faster than I did the first 10). The Olympic swimming is awesome to watch. Also watched the new Batman flick with my boys last night, pretty cool! Hope everyone had a great weekend! Jim |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Stu: Sounds like you had a great time! I could sit for a long time and listen to music. Can we make this a competitive event? As for me, I had a great start to my 1/2 marathon training. Got all my required runs in. Two things I want to do are rock my speed work and not miss any of my long runs. I'd really like to get my best time ever this time because I know I can. Everything is set for me to. Time to train, locations, weather, and I'm healthy for once, lol! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bad week last week. Got sick (or had REALLY bad allergies, still can't tell) and just couldn't force myself to do much of anything for 3 days. This weekend, had a great time near Columbia at a Volleyball tourney. That's where I got most of my workouts. Though it was a bad triathlon training week, it was a milestone for me. For 2 days in a row I weighed in under 200lbs. At 198.8lbs this morning I'm no longer a Clydesdale! 40lbs down and 1 gut to go! -Nate |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Experior - 2012-07-28 3:32 PM p>I did an experimental long run this morning -- woke up, ate nothing, and ran 18, eating nothing (but drinking plenty). I was absolutely shelled by the end (and remain so). I'm ramping up far too quickly, but it's that or plan to walk the marathon. Next will be a huge test -- I'm going to try 20 with 10 at goal pace. So, yesterday's long run I did basically the same thing. No calories, and more significantly I think, no coffee before the run. I felt very bad for pretty much the whole run...... but...... At about the eight mile mark of the run I was running by my best friend's house and stopped in for some hydration. I decided that a cup of coffee, over ice, with a couple teaspoons of sugar might be the ideal rehydration solution..... Well I started running again after my short break (seven miles left in the run) and still felt lousy. At about 20 minutes post coffee/sugar I suddenly started to feel better. More fluid. The pace got faster and the run got easier. Holy cow. I think I am more of a coffee/caffeine addict than I realized. I am sure that the sugar and fluids helped but I firmly believe it was the coffee. I have found that the double caffeine gels during races have the same effect. A caffeinated gel during a race when I am really starting to drag and 20 minutes or so later, things get better. I don't use caffeinated gels for all of my nutrition because I don't want to way overdo it but having a couple of these in my nutritional arsenal is definitely part of my race strategy. I am just now getting to the point where the workouts are stretching out enough that I can start working on fueling strategies for November. |

I am just now getting to the point where the workouts are stretching out enough that I can start working on fueling strategies for November. Yeah, caffeine does seem to have the effect of making one feel better. Some studies seem to indicate that it just makes us better able to handle pain. I might need some of that, because I managed to break my toe on Sunday by kicking a brick (not on purpose!). I did nothing on Sunday (apart from kicking a brick...), swam yesterday, and I'm going to have a shot at my long ride today. Maybe I'll bring along some caffeine... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael - Ouch! Sorry to hear that. Hope it heals quickly! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael, Which toe did you break? When you broke it what did it look like? I hope it isn't anything like when I broke my toe. I broke my pinky toe, 9 days before IMFL10. Accidentally kicked a box of Dr. Pepper that was on the floor. The small bone at the top of the toe was sticking out sideways at a 90 degree angle. We quickly iced it down and my husband tried to put it back into place. Hey, when you're tapering and 9 days out from an IM you'll do anything. My son says all he remembers about the evening is that I wouldn't stop crying. I knew immediately that Florida was out. I had to have surgery to repair the bone and release a pinched nerve. It was a 6+ week of recovery. Which is when I learned to love aqua jogging. If you swim, I would suggest using duct tape to buddy tape the toes together. Even weeks after surgery my foot was too swollen to fit into bike shoes. Clipping in and out on the bike was also a problem for a while. I am so sorry. Edited by Catwoman 2012-07-31 8:17 AM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh it's not as bad as that Rene! No bones were made visible in the breaking of this toe (next to pinky). It's swollen and purple, and yes I've got it taped to the next toe. I swam yesterday and apart from having to ease up on the kick and not push off with that foot, it was fine. I'm actually going to try a long ride today and see what happens. IMWI is definitely still on, sucky training notwithstanding... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A beloved fellow triathlete is at hospital at the moment. He was hit this afternoon. They're trying to locate his internal bleed. This was on the road I always ride for training. The Nimitz Hill I always talk about. I'm up praying hard for him. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey folks-busy day on the road today in nasty weather. Did treadmill run @5am and had a solid bike workout this evening. Michael-sorry about the toe injury. Hope it does not disrupt your training too much. Blanda-hoping things get better for the injured triathlete. Always sad to hear of these types of incidents. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank you for the good thoughts, guys. Thankfully, they found the bleeding in his spleen and fixed him up. He's in stable condition at ICU. He has a broken elbow, broken hip, and lung damage. He was on a taper ride preparing for a half IM in the Philippines this Sunday. He was going down hill. A as he was approaching the turn into a street, a driver did not see him coming and took a left into that street and they collided. I imagine she had stopped to take the left turn, he assumed she saw him and mistook her pause as letting him pass and kept riding. They said he couldn't slow down in time. I love to fly down this hill, but I always slow down at that turn for that very reason. Some people just don't think to look around for cyclists and pedestrians. He is a strong man mentally and physically. We're banking on that strength to get him through this and back on his feet, and hopefully into racing again. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So today I did a long 'ride' (4 hours on the trainer -- was to be 5 but I think 4 hours on the trainer is my limit). The result (apart from making me tired) was that my new purple/red/blue toe coloration extended from the second joint down to the base of the toe and beyond. Any thoughts about what this means? The toe hurt during the ride, but not so much that it made me want to stop. |
