Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ernestov - 2012-05-31 3:58 PM dangremond - 2012-05-31 2:18 PM No running Saturday, maybe some strides on the grass. Focus on the race and break it into pieces, the first thing you want to think about is placement. Since you are going to be 1:40 or faster you want to be very close to the front so you don't get blocked by slower runners, walkers, etc.; go slightly slower than the target pace, maybe 7:50 or so for two miles and then start to crank it up slowly, letting the speed come naturally. After mile 9, unleash it! From the midrace point on, don't drink or eat unless you're thirsty, maybe one gel at the most, but going at a hard pace if you eat too much your blood will shunt from from the muscles into the digestive tract. Your body should have enough sugars for two hours if you carbo load. In a marathon, I would tell you a completely different story.ernestov - 2012-05-31 11:50 AM Mitch, don't be afraid of speed work on race week. Easy strides and reduced volume will slow you down a bit. Tomorrow go to the track, run 30' and in the last six minutes do twenty seconds really hard (all out pace) and recover for forty seconds. The first twenty four minutes do a moderate pace. You'll do well on Sunday. Thanks. My only hesitancy is around some tendonitis I have been experiencing on my lower left leg, medial side. It doesn't seem to slow me down but has been presenting some discomfort as I warm up and then after runs. I've been icing, massaging and taking some ibuprofen in an effort to manage it. I'm trying to find the balance between too much and too little. Recognize that the track is a synthetic surface and much softer. If I do the speed workout tomorrow morning should I run on Saturday too? As an aside, I did about 4 yesterday with 2 miles at 20 seconds faster than Half Marathon pace. Also have a DR's appt for next Tuesday to get the leg checked out. Thanks - I really do appreciate your advice/guidance. Typically on weekend runs have taken gel at 3.5 and 7.5 mile point. I was considering bringing some of my own hydration (GU Electrolyte Mix) as that is what I have trained with and am wondering if late in races I haven't been getting a bit dehydrated. So nutrition plan would be Gel prior to race, Gel at 3.5 miles and Gel at 7.5 miles. Carrying my own hydration I will have enough liquid to cleanly digest the Gel and also able to avoid mess of hydration stations. Glad you're confident on the 1:40 time - I mapped out a pace chart for that time and it looks very challenging. Especially considering that until a month ago I couldn't ever run a half faster than 1:48. Not saying I can't, just think I need to do it to believe it. Pace Plan:

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Final long run today of 10 miles. Other than a 50 mile ride on Saturday (hello aero helmet), I am basically done until race day (other than some short s/b/r sessions). I will post final numbers for the challenge when I get to a PC, but I must have really screwed up my math in terms of logging hours for the challenge. Final hours for the month appear to be at +52 hrs. This has been by far my heaviest training month in total and I think I achieved a good balance between the disciplines - most amount of swimming in any month this year.Needless to say, my wife is about to kill me and I'm not sure that I blame her. I'll play in the June challenge for giggles, but I will need some down time. When I decided on my plan for this year's HIM I committed to putting in a lot of work and a lot more than last year. Turns out my training time was about 40% greater. If I got the dumb idea to do a IM, how much more should I expect to train? Max weekly hours this year approached 16 at peak. Would IM training be much more?Tonight - deep tissue massage!!!Great job to May's participants. |

Put some thought into joining Gabe and myself on Ironman Texas next year or Cozumel on Thanksgiving week of 2013, the latter I think is better for you to be able to put your long stuff in the summer. You are one of those who will kill the distance on the first shot. I am very impressed with your numbers, especially your running speed.Congratulations on a great May, your race will be good because the work has been put in. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I put a runch on the track today (45 MMM) which stands for medium, moderate, mad. Not so mad at the end but ok, I might go do a Crit this afternoon, making a decision in the next fifteen minutes... Whatever I do I still have to swim tonight so we'll see. Congratulations Mitch on winning the May Challenge! Congratulations to Andy and Joe on completing the podium, you are some fierce competition! Congratulations to everybody else on participating and like I said in other challenges (not trying to be cliche), everybody is a winner because I am sure that at least once the only thing that drove you out the door was this little scoreboard and the accountability to the group. - Mitch: S 9 / B 22 / R 21 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 52 ; 33:36'46" Edited by ernestov 2012-05-31 3:40 PM |

Otherwise it is a walk or hike. So are you mostly hiking or running the trail? Also wanted to add that today's run on the track was 3.14miles with a HR of 147 and 13.2pace... Plan is to just train there for most runs. The low HR makes up for going round and round. At least I still have amazing views. Before tomorrows challenge kicks off I have a question. I am going to do the "Incline" in the morning... it is a trail but the old RR ties give it stairs. It is 3.4 miles round trip and a 2200 ft accent... Can I count this as a run? or will I still need additional Tri specific workouts. As it is now I plan on a bike in the afternoon. Thanks Here's a link if anyone wants to look at it. I plan on doing this on a regular basis. Since I'm going with other people and it's my first time I will classify it as a hike... Depending on the downhill portion will depend on how I classify that segment and time. Given that it has a 40% grade I put money on the fact that I will always have 1 foot on the ground this go round! |

May totals: not too bad. Thanks for the motivation to get out there and get the training done. Definitely need more time on the bike. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Little did I know that May 29th would be my final tally but with two horrendous days at work and about 4 hours of sleep in the last 48, so be it. Thanks as always Ernesto for your leadership and all for the motivation. My goal is volume in June and although not a lot of volume in May I feel that the consistency definitely paid off.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A little anti-climactic, ending the month with a rest day. Well, here's the totals, one of my better running months actually, I've just never been able to get my volume any higher without injury, but I'm hoping this MAF way of life will change that. Swim volume was a little disappointing, I'm trying to be closer to 40k/month but I guess this will do for now. June's not going to be spectacular with the first 1.5 weeks being a taper, then a two week break before my IM AZ plan starts. And that two week break coincides with a big family vacation where I won't even have a bike with me.

Over 600 miles biking, over 320 running and 32,000 meters swimming (looks like we can work a bit harder there). Now that the lake isn't freezing, I can swim. So, I can carry my weight in June. ![]() | ![]() Ok All. Here are the June Challenge Rules (in bold so they are easier to find if you are searching for them.) June Challenge Rules: Pick 26 days of June where you are eligible to earn points (or 4 rest days where you aren't). You can choose these on the fly. No restrictions on when in the month they can be. On days you are eligible for points, you get a swim point if your total swimming for the day is at least 30 minutes. You get a bike point or a run point likewise. (So the most points you can get on an eligible day is three.) Participants are ranked first by total number of points and for ties, they are then ranked by total minutes. NO EXTRA POINTS FOR RACES. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congratulations Mitch, Andy and Joe for taking the top 3 spots and everyone else for a great participation during the month. As Ernesto mentioned, we all gained here! Jackieeee, where are you and how did your race go? Did you get a podium again? On my side, after working out almost non-stop for several months to prepare for my IM and getting into a routine, I now feel a little lost with the time I have taken to relax for the last couple of weeks. Don't get me wrong, it has been really important spending good quality time again with my wife and daughters, especially after their huge support with my training (most of the time), but one kind of misses that unique feeling that comes with the completion of many good workouts and shooting for big goals. Just added my last 1 hr bike workout of the month. - Mitch: S 9 / B 22 / R 21 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 52 ; 33:36'46" - Andy: S 12 / B 17 / R 17 /Rest Days 5 ; Total = 48 (Two extra from two races); 41:12'59"
