rrrunner - 2012-07-20 3:27 PM Kirk, glad you're here.  I was just going to ask for bike-related advice.  Someone posted in the Oceanside thread that a smaller crank is recommended for the hills on that race. I ride hills in my training but they are work.  Would I benefit from a smaller crank? Would it affect my other rides? I'm not even sure what I have now or what I would look for.  HELP? Anyone? Anyone?

By smaller do you mean a compact crank?  Do you have already have a compact crank on the front?  What is the cassette on the back (you can count the teeth if you don't know)?

Yes, I do think i meant compact.  I don't know what i have?!?!? I'll count when I get home.  Am I counting the front or back? Which cog(s) do I count? I am a total bike newb...

Asalzwed - 2012-07-20 12:57 PM I have this comped entry to a triathlon on Sunday. My finger is hovering over the registration. I have only been swimming once and my bike rides are uhhhh, limited.....

What's the worst that happens, you DNF and didn't waste your money on it?? What's the swim distance - you were rocking those 100s the other day, you can certainly do a spring distance swim.  And anyone who can run 26.2 can ride their bike for a few miles! And, obviously, the run is a non-issue.

It's just a sprint...a half mile swim. 12 mile bike.

I hope you've already done it. With your speed (based on your logs), you'll be done in an hour and probably won't even break a sweat. Tongue out

I just googled your bike and I don't think that you do.  You can count the teeth on that to confirm.  A compact is usually 34/50 (that's the number of teeth) or so.  (I think that yours is a 39/53.)

Yes, a compact crank will be beneficial on a hilly route.  It's not a cheap thing though -- $275 or so plus installation.

Info about compact cranksets from Wikipedia:

In the context of road cycling, compact drivetrain typically refers to double cranksets with a smaller (usually 110mm) bolt circle diameter than the standard 130mm or Campagnolo's 135mm. As of 2006, all of the major component manufacturers such as Shimano and Campagnolo offer compact cranks in their midrange and high-end product lines. The compact crankset provides a compromise between the standard road double crankset (with 39/52 or 39/53 tooth chainrings) and the road triple (with 30/42/52 or 30/39/53 tooth chainrings). The compact crankset has two chainrings and typical ratios are 34/48, 34/50 and 36/50. This provides nearly the same lower gear ratios as a triple but without the need for a third chainring, a triple front derailleur and a long cage rear derailleur. Both Shimano and Campagnolo recommend and sell front derailleurs specifically designed for compact cranksets, claiming better shifting.

Compact gearing is not necessarily lower than standard gearing if cassettes with smaller sprockets (such as 11–23) are used. A high gear of 50×11 on a compact drivechain is actually slightly higher than the 53×12 of a standard set.

Compact gearing usually has a large percentage jump between the two chainrings. In balance, it may also allow small jumps in the rear by allowing a closer ratio cassette to be used, except for the 9% jump at the high end between the 11 and 12 tooth sprockets.

Huh?! Greek to me... Does this mean spinning faster up the hills?

I tried searching the BT threads for a discussion that would explain this stuff. I understand bigger gear in front means more resistance.  I read in a thread that a compact crank makes it easier to find "the right" gear vs. too hard or too easy being the only choices.

ETA: Read it again.  I think I'm starting to understand it...

Jayne gave good advice, honestly I live on a pancake so not sure, but I did change out my rear cassette to have a larger rear cog for the PUT, it seemed to help for the hills to have a larger spread of gears.

hahaha, oh four weeks is plenty of time with that discipline! PS - I"m jealous it's already Friday night for you. I'm wasting my afternoon away here in the forums, completely ignoring the fact that I have minimum billable hours. Oopsie. I'll make up the 100 hours or so sometime in November...

That is one of the reasons I don't work in the private sector!  That and the fact that I get to be involved in crazy cases like Casey Anthony and the FAMU hazing stuff and get to ride in helicopters and go on search warrants AND practice law

WHAT!?! Well shoot...with people like Casey Anthony, I can feel pretty good about where I sit on your priority list with my petty crimes. Smile

Now to google how to make chloroform, you know, out of curiosity.

You hit that button yet? (Oh yeah, i can be the bolshy one now, cos i HTFU and hit my button)

Yes, I am in. The promo code they gave me didn't work (I imagine they deactivated it MONTHS ago when you are SUPPOSED to register) but the RD told me to just show up at the expo tomorrow and she'll take care of me.

Crap. I guess I better dig out my tri stuff...

What do I need again? Smile

You like minamilist right?

Suit. Bike. Helmet. Shoes.  GO.

Too true... and shades and goggles

Get the UV goggles and you have a twofer, plus AWESOME race pics Laughing

I am now nearly done with part two of the tirlogy Fifty Shades of Drivel - my God it is dull but once i start something I have to finish it (hope that's true for IM!)  Next I think it's time for Game of Thrones - any opinions on that?  Oh and i've not read Into the Wild so maybe that's first.

Sun is shining here in Melbourne, just going to do some laundry get that out on the washing line - iron some already washed clothes then go for a run, may pop into LBS for a chat with the owner, very nice piglet.

Then swim squad at 3pm and then people coming for pizza.

Good luck all you racers - look forward to copious reports and laughs!

The books, right?

I think the 4th and 5th are kind of fascinating in their own right, and George RR Martin is undeniably a master weaver. HOWEVER ... I was joking with one of my friends that a bunch of 4-5 could have been written Mad Libs style ...

_____ Stark entered the room, wearing a ________ gown of _______ color. Lord _______, resplendent in _______, fingered his (insert name of weapon) ...

And so forth.

Kirk, nice to see you back. Your opinion was noted along with those of the other Manatees. Although there was some sense in selecting the sprint, I am muppet enough to ignore that and this very morning put my money where my mouth is. My first Oly is on 19th August -signed up and paid up.

So, that's me and Chris. Anyone seen any committment from the other one? (you know who you are).

Kate, was going to say mythology but i like the sound of the prof that you have previously had.

Yanti, you are incorrigable. Don't ever change.

Salty, I'm still getting over your marathon time. Wow.

Erica, Unlucky on the 'accident'. Live and learn. Glad no-one was injured.

Janyne, thanks for making me make my mind up........I think.

I am going to be watching the last of the TdF over the weekend, getting in a few rides of my own and also meeting my sons for fun and a BBQ Sunday afternoon. It's his 22nd B'day and his French  g/friend is over for 5 days.

Weather forecast is also gooood for a change, so all is fine with the world.Smile

Hope your Fridays are winding up nicely as you prep for your weekends.

Like idiot mentor, like idiot mentee! I'm so proud. Don't you ever change either. Okay, well, establishing and following structured training is a good idea. Or so they tell me.

GO SALTY!!!

Heh. I did a sprint tri the weekend after a marathon. Except it was the marathon that was unplanned until a couple days in advance (Elvis, world record, how could I pass that up?).

Your legs might become a little uncooperative at some point during the run ... as Jens Voigt would say, "Shut up legs!" and keep turning 'em over.

It's all for fun anyway.

Good luck to the racers this weekend!

And happy birthday to Jo's husband. I hope you all have a great celebration.

I went for a short swim at noon, and I'm hoping to go for a short run this evening. We're watching Eragon, so I need to wait until it's over. Getting impatient.

Just got back from my early bike ride. Got 3.5 miles before a rear flat cut things short.Frown Luckily, i was riding a short circuit lap so i hopped off and ran back to my house. I made 16 mins before it hit so the ride counts towards my TdF total!

Looks like a trip to the LBS for tubes and tools etc.

While i wait for it to open, it's time for a hot chocolate drink and out on the MTB around our local trail.

So. Between now and Aug. 19 you need to acquire a basic toolkit in a saddlebag and learn how to change a flat.

Between now and Monday a ride of either 15mi (road) or about 1.5 hours (road or trail). If you need to split that up, try to make it a total of 2 hours or 20mi.

Some kind of a swim.

And a very easy 15-20min run. Emphasis on VERY and EASY. If it ain't VERY and EASY, walk.

I'm working on the rest of your Screaming-Edge Survival 4-week Oly training plan.

I'm working on the rest of your Screaming-Edge Survival 4-week Oly training plan.

oh your bit gonna make him puke then take him to breakfast?

That would be the specific instructions for the swim, yes.

I think he specified charming intelligent beautiful mentor but I wasn't sure when you'd check in again so I went ahead and bit.

I was hoping one of you would know someone, but now you've started i guess you can carry on. Between you, you hit almost one of my specifics.
