Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed I have been reading about two products and I was wondering if anyone had any feedback or thoughts? The first is called Oral IV hydration support and the second is I-bike power meter. |

I really enjoyed meeting you all! Kelly, I have to give you a HUGE thank you. I seriously can't even begin to tell you how much you helped me this weekend. I rode on the Sunday as you suggested, and also followed your nutrition advice. It was like night and day from Saturday: I couldn't believe the difference. I had my head in a better place, my speed got better as the ride progressed and I felt good running afterwards. I have to say, the gearing advice was also invaluable. I have been riding each day since I got home and consciously putting the gearing into practice. (I had my fastest TT ride ever yesterday) What type of gearing advice did she give you? Glad to hear you were able to put together a solid weekend of training. Not much longer and we'll be cheering you on! Generally we working on descending and then gearing on climbs. When there is a long or sttep clim you are going to end up in the small ring, big cog. Therefore, its important to grab back a gear or two when the climb levels out so you have "additional" gears to go to when you start climbing again. I should note I also tried to teach Texas Scott how to do a kiernan head butt on Sunday but as soon as I made contcat with him he turned white as a ghost so I decided it wasn't a good idea. |

One there are lots of minerals in this htat are not necessary when training/racing that can lead to GI distress. Two you still need CHO. Even if you use this for all your fluid needs, its not providing you with any CHO. I-bike power meter - I guess the question here is what do you think you will get out of a power meter? |

Oral IV appears to have no calories and no carbs. While this may work for day to day folks, or even those that have sub hour workouts, it doesn't work for long course triathletes. The other issue I have is it is a prop blend. I'd much rather take in a product that spells out exactly what is in their product and how much of it there is.
Carbs are something we need as triathletes. How much can be debated, but training your gut to take in and process carbs while training is very, very important. |

In my never-ending quest for knowledge, I managed to skim through most of the posts I missed while away. Nice to meet you, Rudy. I look forward to your journey back to triathlon. Scott, I did not know about your loss. I just finished a trial (see above) where two five year-old girls drowned. The mental and emotional roller coaster I have been on pales in comparison. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I am trying to take your advice to heart, though, and come back slowly after being away for a couple of weeks. Glad you're feeling better and running without pain, Jen. Also good to see Kelly's hamstring cooperating again. I missed a lot of great race results. Way to represent!! For my part, I am just trying to stay in the moment and focused on what I am supposed to be doing this week. As soon as I start looking ahead and realize how few weeks are left until November and how far I have to go, it is completely overwhelming. Don't look ahead and don't get overwhelmed. Come up with your plan and stick to it (every day!). Consistency always wins, but life gets in the way occasionally. The key is to make the missed days few and far between. Which race are you training for? IMFL |

I confess - I googled it and was even more confused. I think I'd need new shorts if someone tried to teach me that. |

OK - I read about the Oral IV stuff on an ultra marathoners race report so I was just curious. The i-bike - not sure, I just hear you talk about power meters and their value and it is only a fraction of the cost of a 'real' power meter. |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Why would someone do that headbutt? Is that legal? Or is it a friendly way of saying hi? Would it be considered wrong to follow that headbutt with a right cross? I may be looking at a 4 hour ride on the trainer tomorrow.... Larkin - so sorry to hear about the abrupt turn of events. You seem to handle adverse events so well. I trust something good will follow soon. Enjoy the vacation my friend...you have most definitely earned it. |

Mark Renshaw (the one doing the head butt) got kicked out of the Tour de France for that particular head butt. While head butts are not allowed in road cycling they are allowed (and are common) in keirin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keirin). |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed So another bike ride under the belt with a space heater on and a long sleeved tee!!! It is certainly getting easier, but can I do it for 6-7 hours? I honestly think this is partly why I could run the run on Sunday. Good thing is the weather at Muncie is relatively nice so far .... I can hope right? I am working about 14 hours days so hot yoga is out of the question right now ... |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed So Chicagoland has gotten so much rain OW swims and triathlons are being cancelled this weekend. I assume since Muncie it getting alot of rain as well the water will at least be cooler than 78. Can a body of water warm up as quickly as 2 weeks is forecast is not hotter than 85 right now? Also, has it ever happened that a swim portion will be cancelled because of e-coli? Thoughts: If the water is borderline illegal for a wetsuit would you wear one (still legal)? The buoyancy is huge, but will the heat of wearing one at that borderline create a problem? |

The swim was cancelled at long course nationals in Myrtle Beach in 2010 due to E. Coli (issue was heavy rain fall pre race). 3. WTC wetsuit cutoff temperature is 76.1, not 78 (78 is USAT but WTC goes by their own rules). As long as you properly hydrate before and after the swim wearing a wetsuit in 76.1 degree water should be fine. |

I wore a wetsuit for Cleveland olympic last August, and it was one of those borderline but legal situations. Race officials made the call about 15 minutes before the swim start so I was just standing without a wetsuit. The air temperature was very warm. I wore it because it was legal and I needed more practice in it. I was hot while I was standing around in it but fine once in the water. |

Legs are starting to come around now and feel normal. We are headed down to NC tomorrow for the week. My company gave me an unexpected vacation. Unfortunately a very long vacation. Government decided that they didn't want to fund my position anymore. So I am on the job hunt. Sucked because I came off a great high from the weekend and then I was told on Monday that Friday will be my last day. We think it is a blessing in disguise. This job was a tough commute and kept me from the family a lot more. It was difficult on my training schedule as well. Now on to new opportunities and hopefully something better for my family and I. So if you know anyone in Northern VA hiring a Info Systems Security Professional I am their man! Ugh. That really stinks Larkin. i hope that you and your family can find something soon. x2! Does my fuel belt go in the T2 bag or somewhere else? Don't I drop off those bags the day before race? Or can you add liquid nutrition to them on race day morning? |
