TheSchwamm - 2008-07-31 8:02 PM Speed intervals will not build your endurance. Running more will. Says the girl who doesn't run. heh.

The Dark Master has taught you well.

But 'tis true. And the only way for you to run more, right now, is to run LESS, and then when you do run, run SLOWLY.

That way, you can run more.

Listen to her, she was the June BT Triathlete of the month (meaning she knows a lot more than some of us who are in TAN).

cami bee - 2008-07-31 9:59 PM Schwamm, 'stix, are those microbrews? I don't think that there's much microbrewerying in Iowa. There's a local winery but there wine isn't very good. They have a sangria-like drink (the Spanish girlfriend of fellow grad student insists that it's not sangria) is pretty tasty though. They have live music on Sunday, which is about as good as much $0-3 live music can be.

There are a bunch of microbreweries here in the Quad Cities. I'm taking the new girl to dinner at one tomorrow (they also have good food and an upstairs with pool tables and darts if we want to hang out beyond dinner, but not so late as to make me miss the opening of the two transition areas for my race (it's a point to point race)).

I can't believe you're going on a date the nice before your race - you must be a lot calmer than I am.  I'm always freaking out.

Eh. i've substituted my running with reading about running. At PT this morning i was told that i'm going to be the most learned runner who can't run.

i'm not sure if that's something to aspire to or not.

I just switch my brain to race about 15 minutes before the start.  I usually listen to The Doors to get myself into the right frame of mind.  I'm so low key on race morning I need someone to annoy me to get me ready to go.  That's why K is coming with me to the race.  Well, that and because I hate doing things that make sense.

Yeah, so am I. A little mini tank. That's why I try to be careful with building up my running and doing the run/walk thing. Even if I was at 15% BF I would still have about 20-25 lbs easy on the elite distance runners my height. My body wasn't really built for running, but I do like cruising along at a comfortable pace. Actually that's pretty much how I feel about most sports.

I'd recommend trying the run/walk and seeing what you think. But first get those legs rested. I find that my running recovery time is much slower when I'm running and biking together (I have weak calves). Also, some people use "The Stick" to work out those muscles.

yeah even with the 17 pounds i've lost i'm still over 270... i've been trying to do speed intervals to build up my endurance..

whats the stick?

Speed intervals will not build your endurance. Running more will. Says the girl who doesn't run. heh.

just wanted to be faster.. figured doing at least a 5mph pace was better..

Yanti... technically the S in LSD running is steady... Long STEADY Distance... which of course for most of us 'round here is SLOW... but it's the steady thing that builds endurance and drops weight...

I know many TANners don't venture into TriTalk land very often, but there is a lot of good info in there.  The prevailing thought is that speed intervals shouldn't be attempted until you have a significant miles per week (18-20+) and a decent amount of time running (injury free).  The recommendation for people below that amount is all low intensity with volume increasing no more than 10% per week (this is a pretty common golden rule), with a decrease in volume every couple of weeks for recovery.  I've tried it and it's been working for me.  Are you using a plan to train for your race(s)?

I'm doing a couch to sprint program..

It's one thing if they want to name their product "The Stick", but then to have tabs on the website: "Sticks by Length", "Sticks by Firmness", that's really asking a lot out of those of us who can be a bit juvenile.

Cool.  If you do the lower intensity, you'll recover faster so that means you'll miss less workouts, or feel fresher coming into them.  And if you stay consist, you'll find that you'll just naturally start to increase the pace.  But they same the changes are small and gradual.  A lot like losing weight I would suspect.

Speed intervals will not build your endurance. Running more will. Says the girl who doesn't run. heh.

just wanted to be faster.. figured doing at least a 5mph pace was better..

build a solid base and you will speed up automatically... When I started two years ago, I was consistently at 12-12:30 min/mile.  As I started increasing my base, with minimal speed work... really really minimal... I saw my breakthrough when I went out for a 10-miler and just ran... and went 10:something for the whole run.  Speed will come, but you gotta get your body used to simply running...

and I just hit my PR on a 5k on July 4th with 28:45, so I'm still no speed demon, but that is a pace I can be happy with... And if I could do a marathon at 10 min/mile... i would be absolutely ecstatic.

Certainly.

In G's case, he's injured--shin splints are an overuse injury--so getting back into it, he must do it slowly. Once he actually gets back into it, then he has a chance of getting to long, steady distance.

Straight run training has been most beneficial to me in improving between races. It has benefitted both my running AND biking.

However, I've been playing soccer for 25+ years, so once I get past the first couple games of the season, I can usually get back into full-90 shape pretty easily.

Now, since I've passed 30 that's not quite as easy, but I'm getting back on my old team (read: NOT BEGINNERS) this fall, so I should be getting back up to speed with much quickness.

Can't. Friggin'. Wait.

I wish I would have been good enough at soccer to play as an adult.  Back when I played as a kid I was really tall and slow, so I either played defense, where I was good, or for two years they put me in goal (my last two years oddly enough).  I was the worst goalie in the league for those two years.  One year my team didn't win a game.  Something about no hand eye co-ordination, which I guess you don't have if you're growing 3-6 inches a year.
