A treatise on lightning, electricity and indoor pools. I think I will share this with my fitness facility.

http://www.aquaticsintl.com/safety/when-lightning-strikes.aspx

Shucks! Edit to add this from the "National Lightning Safety Institute"

http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_pls/indoor_pools.html

Apparently Michigan is one of the few states that has a code, so my facility won't be changing their tune anytime soon. I still can't find one single source where someone has been injured while actually in an indoor pool. The Lightning Safety Institute seems to think that the shower and plumbing are as much or more of a risk so I am upset they let me take a shower after evacuating the pool (pink font should be used here).

Jason - thanks for the links. It really does make sense that indoor pools are safe since the entire structure should be grounded.Got in a good amount of training today. I rock climbed followed by a 2k swim. Later in the day in got in a 10k run. Feeling good overall. I signed up for my HM next month and my first full marathon tis October. I have my third sprint Tri this weekend that I'm looking forward to trying to improve.

My pool has never closed for lightning. I didn't even know that happened.

Still just kind of skating by with the workouts, trying to keep from getting injured before the HM. Still hoping I can tough it out and run the whole thing even if I can't walk for a couple of days following.

As far as the new diet goes-I'm starving. I lost 1.5lbs. the first day but nothing since. I swim tonight, though and that usually helps me see something on the scale in the morning.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

I just realized that we do not have an indoor pool on island!! At our outdoor pool at our gym, the slightest rumble will close the pool for a minimum of 45 minutes. I never thought that would be necessary for indoor pools!

An hour of spinning and a 3 mile run right after today.

On the agenda for fun races, a 20 mile bike race this Sunday, 2 night MTB races, a 48 mile relay run race, and a beer run. That's just April! May has a 2 and 5 mile swim, a 13 mile memorial run, and a Cyclofemme ride just for the ladies. I love Guam's sporting community. It's so small that it's easy to cram races into every weekend without too much effort.

Rene: I imagine you're getting stronger every day.

Happy training!

Jason-pools down here always close when there is thunder/lightning in the area. Unfortunately, that is most afternoons during the Summer months. My shortest ever swim was 1 lap due to weather closing the pool. However, there have been several times when I started a tough swim workout with the hope and expectation that it would be cut short by bad weather only to suffer all the way through.

Good luck to all those racing this weekend. I'm "off" this weekend from racing with a long bike and run on tap. Also, have to get some spring cleaning type work done around the house. I'll be back racing a local sprint on April 20. After that I'll have a break from racing until I do another sprint  June 1 and Eagleman 70.3 (my A+ race) on June 9. Finally feel that I have recovered from last Sunday's race. Fortunately, I have a couple more days of easy workouts before things gear up again.

Tonight will be my crazy test. I'm still at school, and will be until 8:30 or so, at least. The question is...will I still do my hour ride on the trainer when I get home...then get up tomorrow morning for my 3rd swim of the week? Sealed

DNS for the next twelve months!

I haven't been ignoring the forum, I have been in the hospital since SAT with a broken hip.  I was approaching a stop sign at a busy intersection.  I moved into the lane to prepare to stop and a car zipped around me and hit his breaks. God forbid he had to wait for me to clear the lane.  I swerved to the left quickly so as not to hit him or oncoming traffic.  My down pedal was on that side, it clipped the ground and down I went onto my hip.

Two cyclists stopped and called my wife.  She took me to the ER.  The attending orthopedist has X-rays done and we had a decision to make.  He said that under most circumstances he would automatically replace the hip on a man my age.  However, given the physical condition I was in and the amount I work out when I can, he wanted to try save the hip.

He called in his surgical team and they operated that night, finishing up a 1:00am Sunday.  I am 6-7 weeks non-weight bearing and doing NOTHING.  That is how long it will take for the bone to heal.  Then it will be six months to know if enought blood flow was restored to save the head of the hip.  If not, then they replace the hip and we start all over.

Best case, I might be able to do the race I had coming up on the 20th of this month, NEXT YEAR.

I want to thank you all for your fabulous support. If I can be of any assisatance on your swim, just let me know.  Happy to help if I can.  Everybody please be well, be safe, and tri hard.

Stuart-hate to hear this but glad you are "OK". Thankfully, things are not worse. Stinks since you were just coming back from injury. I hope your healing and recovery goes well and you are able to resume your training. Maybe we will just place you on the "injured reserve" list for now. Please keep us updated on how you are doing.

Stuart.

So sorry to hear about this. What a bummer. Please feel free to hang around or drop in any time, especially to give swim advice

Will you be able to swim eventually to maintain fitness?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the head of the hip maintains the blood supply and that this will be your last surgery....

ETA--I see you said doing NOTHING. Here's hoping you can maintain your sanity.

Stuart, you just can't seem to get a break. Rest up and don't give up. Your fitness has to have a positive influence on your recovery. Thank you for your thoughtfulness to continue to give swimming advice.

Oh man, Stuart. I'm so sorry to hear that. You'll definitely be in my thoughts and prayers.

I don't know how much you've already done on this particular front, but in case you want some advice, here is a great blog post by DCRainmaker about his experience when he was struck by a car and how he dealt with insurance etc... Hope it's helpful to you.

Stuart, so sorry to hear that! I hope you have a speedy recovery, and good luck with the doing NOTHING recovery aspect. Anyone have suggestions for passing time during that? I'd imagine it's a lot like being on the trainer, right? I say, load up the Netflix queue, or maybe a dozen good books?

Thanks to all for the well wishes.  I already have two books I want read sitting next to me.

No worries on the insurance front. That's my business.  While I have a $8000 deductible plan I also have a $7500 accident reimbursement plan.  Fortunately this will not end up being too expensive financially.

Clearly my biggest issue right now is finding 'comfortable' for 24 hours a day.  I am using a walker to get around on a very lmited basis. other than that, just sitting or in bed.  I did get a boost from Caliie (the dog in my profile).  She normally sleeps in our bed upstairs with us.  But since stairs are out, she never left my side. Kept a smile on my faceSmile.

Half Marathon on tap for tomorrow morning....... Except the run course is under water right now. The race is run along a flood plain and we have had some serious rain in the last 36 hours. I hear they are trying to reroute and certify a different course. It should be interesting.

I haven't raced in five plus months. I am more nervous than you would think. I guess I just know it is going to hurt....

Jason-two strides into the race and the nerves will be gone. You have done some serious work over the Winter. Sure its going to hurt but you will be moving faster at the same level of pain  Have a good race.  Be confident.

Good luck to all the racers this weekend.

Stuart, sorry to hear about your injury. It sounds like you are finding some positives to focus on with the books, dog loyalty and financial side of things. I am glad you are still joining in on our chat!

Jason, I know from your posts that you have worked very hard and I think your work will push you through the nerves and the pain!

I am looking forward to a group sponsored ride in the morning. I have walked 5ks before with lots of people but not a ride of this size.

Dave -- similar story here.  Resting tomorrow with a sprint tri on Sunday.  Still waiting to hear if all three legs are a go.  Who knows, I may come back on Sunday afternoon and give a report of my first aquathlon!  Everybody think warm thoughts please.

Just finished a great swim -- managed to do 3 x 500m without much fatigue, and without seeing any drop-off in pace (about 2:30 / 100m consistent).    Feeling very well prepped for Sunday -- after the race, I'll need to see if I can push the pace a bit faster.

So -- Dave and Jason -- good luck!

Stuart -- really sorry about the setback, but glad that you have a trusty dog to help out.

Scott.

Good luck, racers!!!

Rene and Stuart, focus on the big picture. Being fully recovered and back at it with a force!

Pretty busy weekend for me. Today, Saturday, I got in 1500m. 500 swim, 500 pull buoy, 500 swim. I think I provided the lifeguards some quality entertainment at every turn with the pull buoy. Amazingly, I felt much faster with it, lol! My legs and their kicking seem to slow me down quite a bit.

Afterwards I got in a 2 hours mountain bike ride with a friend, which was part of my training. This is the same girl that hollered at me quite a bit previously when we rode together. Today she told me I was "eating up the course" and I was never that far behind her unless I took a wrong turn. I was so proud of myself!

Tomorrow I am supposed to do a 20 mile bike race, but my daughter mentioned in a private moment that she'd really like to give the fishing pole that her Daddy bought her a try one day. Husband and I decided to go fishing tomorrow morning instead. So, fishing in the AM and then a soccer game in the early afternoon.

Happy training, friends!
