News!

My professor that just did Iron Man loaned me his Giant road bike to ride in my tri.  This thing has an aero aluminum light weight frame, aero bars, computer, shimano 105 throughout, and 10 gears on the cassette to play with.  He lent me his farmer john wetsuit, if I need it, also.  Just got back from a spin on it and averaged 20mph for my 9 mile ride.

This is quite an upgrade from the old cannondale clunker that normally get's me around.  Taking said bike to shop tomorrow, hoping they can also look over the Giant as well.

Jackpot!  Now if you could just get the prof to give you an A as well!  Enjoy the speed!  Now the question is how well will it work for you during your long rides?

60 miler planned for Sunday.  I had to change his saddle to mine to accomodate my water bottle holder on my seatpost.  It should ride fine, I just rode it 13 today, felt great.

Last long run today before my taper.  13.1 at 8:40/mi pace in 93 degrees. I think heat in the 90's will kill my run, but nice to know I can still get in under 2 hr. mark.  Had to stop at a fountain at mile 9 and submerge head.  Jumped in the river at mile 10 and floated in cool water for 10 minutes, and ran out of water in 70 oz. cammelback on mile 10.5.  I got the thing filled at golf course at mile 11 and by mile 13, I was done.  I walked the last .5 to my house up a hill.  started feeling dizzy at the end there.

Troika triathlon in 2.5 weeks.

Great work, Kevin!  Running in the heat is serious business and it must be good to know that you can get the job done no matter how hot it gets.  Love the fact that you stopped to cool down at a golf course and river along the way but suprised that your butt didn't end up on a bar stool some where.

One suggestion about hydration - it would help if you drank more BEFORE starting out on your run.  The fact that you are getting so dehydrated as to get dizzy should concern you because it's not only unhealthy but it will seriously cut into your time.  I've been working in this myself and have found that drinking 16-20 oz of h2o before heading out saves me from running dry.  The problem is that it causes me to pee but I'm working on figuring out exactly how much to drink so I don't need to hit the porta potty along the way.

You are gonna rock that HIM's world!

I agree, make sure you are hyrdated all day and all night before you go on any of your rides/runs

I say just pee yourself and stay hydrated!

It sure isn't easy in the heat. I think the only way to take care of it is to drink lots and drink early. If you are going at a hard pace I think there will come a point where you run out of fluids and need to take a minute to really load up. Although I am not certain because I don't get out in the heat a bunch. It has been hot here recently though, like 25C, and I have been suffering, especially on my lunch runs. Even on my morning runs I am going through 2 litres in 3 hours, when in the winter I can do the whole run without any fluids. AND I come back parched.

I have employed that load up on water early strategy before with success in my annual 50k run. Usually have to take a lead at 10k and then again at 30k, but it cuts down on the attention I have to pay to drinking during the run, of course it is in February so fluid needs are at a minimum.

I know lots of people suggest loading up for tris because, I mean, during the swim you can just let out the excess.

Looking forward to Tim Noakes' Waterlogged on this topic, I have his Lore of Running and love it.

best run in the history of life. 10.37k at 5:05 pace. Was at 5:30 pace at 5k and 5:20 pace at 7k, must have killed the last 3k. Felt super strong. ALL IN THE MIDDLE OF A THUNDERSTORM. It was wild.

Just along the bow river from downtown, usually an out and back thingy.

Three things before I head to see the new Batman movie with my son..

1) Went out for a killer hill workout today.  I did a hill workout yesterday but really wanted to push myself today to gauge how far I had come.  WHen I left for MI - I was only able to ride up this hill 1x and today I did it 3x.  Improvement.

2) It occurred to me during my ride that in addition to training my legs for this century, what I've really been doing is reprogramming my brain.  I've been a runner since HS - but have always believed that while I wasn't the fastest runner that I could at least outwork anyone.  All of this hard work is really changing the way that I view myself.  I'm getting stronger... and I'm starting to believe that I can do anything and do it fast (yesterday my son asked me if I could ever qualify for the olympics?  Too cute)

NICE!!!

3) On map my ride I compared the rides that I've done to my century - none of them really come close in terms of elevation gain.  I'm gonna head out on Thursday for a long hill ride to try to show myself that I can take care of business.

Gotta go.

Hi Boys!  Sounds like everyone is really killing it out there...me not so much but maintaining...gained 7LBS while traveling and wine tasting, going to concerts, drinking beer and wine!  Whew...this week I lost all I gained in the past three weeks just by cutting out the alcohol and only eating when I am hungry.  Blah!

Spent last weekend dancing the night away, this weekend we floated the river and kayaked in Lake Tahoe for three hours straight!  Sunburnt as heck so I actually called into work today!  Got a nice run in this afternoon with a cooling sweet summer rain...white tank not such a good choice.

How are the beers flowing?

Wow, sounds like you had a great weekend! Hope you had a couple of cold beers for the river float...

As for the white tank, i guess it is perspective...Laughing

Good to see you back on track. Any races coming up for you?

Vacations are impossible. Actually summer is impossible. Too much nice weather and excuses to imbide. Good job on losing it.

Too funny with the choice of wardrobe. On Monday during the epic downpour I saw a number of people with poor choices. Some were even hiding under bridges waiting for the worst of the storm to pass. At least you weren't one of those.

Damn - I totally forget my real reason for signing on...

I weighed in this morning - 178.6: Mission Accomplished!

Congratulations.  It's been a great and rewarding journey I'm sure.

As for my weight loss goal, I have thrown in the white towell after yo-yoing back up to the high 170's.  Please PM me your contact info, and I will send out a visa cash card after the first of the month.

A lyric from AC/DC's Back in Black comes to mind "Have a drink on ME!"

Prost!

168 was my goal.  I've been down there several times after epic training rides/runs, but 171 is as low as I've been in the am weigh in.  I am currently sitting at 175, and thinking it may be too much to think about prior to my first tri to get weight down also.  I want to have energy on race day.  August 6th is the deadline, my tri is August 5th.

Way to reach your goal.  We'll see if I can buckle down and reach mine by next Wednesday's weigh in.  Too many dam barb'que's and beverages inbetween.  I hear you DH when you say it's rough in the summer.

Over, did you say over?  Nothing is over until we decide it is... Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? (Germans?  Forget it he's rolling)... And it aint over now.  Because when the going gets tough, the tough get going.  Who's with me?  Let's go!

Proud to have reached my goal - but I want you to reach yours too... What could you do to make it happen?

Gentlemen... I'm so glad this week is over!  I spent the week getting packed up and moving to our new home.  It was a bit^h  but it's done.

I managed to get in my rides (even if I didn't log them) and also had my first flat (god did it suck.  Not only did I get a flat - but my pump didn't work and then it started to rain... brutal).  But I'm proud to say that before my back tire went, I was able to get up the mountain that I failed to finish in June. So, I feel pretty good as I get ready for my taper.

So, I don't know if I told you about this last week, but when my wife heads south to visit her dad, I'm gonna head up to Canada to visit Montreal and Quebec City to try some tasty ice cold beverages.  It will be hard not hanging out with my father in law (hear that sarcasm), but I think I will manage to a decent time.  My goal is to try or sample 20 new beers over the course of 3 days.  Does it get any better!

Great line, great movie!  But yes, It's over.  178 this morning.  Here's my rationalle.  I was losing in an unhealthy, wrestler making weght kind of way.  That's fine and acceptable going into a 6 minute match, but not into a 6 hour triathlon.  I do not want to show up on race day depleted and starving for long endurance energy.  I'll be back on the program soon.

Flat's suck.  2 rides ago, I had a flat.  I was about 8 miles from home in cycling shoes, I was all prepared to walk on backs of heels/hitch hike home with expensive loner bike hiding behind a tree when a good samaritan roles up on me and gives me a tube (I'd still had the tube's and tool bag on my other bike).  So I get going again, but my pump could only pump tire to 80psi, and 6 miles down the road, you guessed it, I got a pinch flat after hitting a larger than average bump.  Now I'm only 2 miles from home, and again, I hide the bike behind another tree, and get ready to walk on heels and or hitch hike home, when a man on a bike with 2 frames welded on top of eachother (looks like a circus carney's ride) rolls up on me and says he has a patch kit.  20 minutes later, I'm on my way.

The thing with flats for me is that your always on a time crunch training anyways, so if something goes wrong out there, the Mrs. is left at home with the kids wondering wth you are while you have 20 minutes to get home, shower, and load everyone in the car to get to so and so's birthday party, or such and such social event.

Love it.  Troika triathlon in 6 days!

When's your ride David?
