Good morning,

1.5 mile run pain free. Will try another short later. Plan swim at lunch.

Have a sports Chiro apt this Saturday for my possible ITB issue. Pushups and squats today.

Question for the group.  My wife got me a beginner road bike for valentines day and im looking for a cycling computer.  Any recommendations?

I like to use my wrist Garmin 910XT for sbr. I just put it on my wrist (flipped to the inside) on the bike instead of getting a separate bike computer. It does speed/cadence from my Ant+ sensors on the bike.

Im a bit late but great idea.

Despite sleeping like crap last night, I got out of bed determined to have a good day.  After dropping off my daughter at school, I came back home and got in a 30 minute yoga session that I designed myself on Yoga Studio (a cool app you can download) to avoid any strain on my back.  I then had a healthy breakfast of wheat berries with blueberries and bananas and plan on working on my cover letters to various schools this morning.  As a reward, I'm going into Boston this afternoon to test drive a mini (my car is still running so I won't buy - but I thought it would be a cool way to spend an hour).  Then, I'm gonna enjoy a mini beer tour by stopping at Harpoon, Night Shift and Idlehands Breweries.  It's my hope that I'll be able to try 10 new beers.  How can I not have a good day...

Prost!

Best way I can think of to spend the day!

Hi all,

Been a few days since Ive been on but my exercise habits have been good.

Instead of hitting the gym last friday I took my wife on a long walk with the dog.  We (she) are at the 30 week point in the pregnancy so she wants to keep up her energy and strength because the baby is getting bigger and is taking all of her energy.  It was a warm day so we went for a 2hr walk.

I took Saturday easy and just cleaned up some of the snow around the house.  Sunday I had planned to go to spinning and then swim but my cousin asked me to play basketball with he and his son.  Well it was acutally 18&up open gym for pickup games.  Im only 30 but havent played pickup basketball since I was probably 19.  Holy crap 6 games and 3 hrs later and I was burnt out. 3 of the games ended up being full court (aka suicides).  All in all a great day.

Monday I was able to pull myself out of bed at 430 and hit the gym.  Ive been using the push up app for the challenge and on the rest period between sets I have been doing crunches and situps.  So i did those and then got a 2.5mi run in and finshed with some deep stretching.

Last night I played racquet ball for 2 hrs with my brother inlaw and finally got my bike put together. Pretty excited to start riding.

Im going to rest up today, my knees have been hurting a bit since sunday but Ill be back at it in the morning.

My gym is starting this weekly spinning training where each week gets more and more intense.  It looks like it will be pretty fun and its on saturday mornings so no work to get in the way.

On a beer note I purchased an otter creek variety pack.  Ive always been a fan of their Black IPA but really enjoyed this Hop Session Ale they have.

Its nice coming on to the boards and reading how everyone finds ways to include exercise into their days/weeks.

Thanks for keeping me motivated! (sorry for the long message)

Hey Lenny - Glad to hear that you have had a good week both in terms of exercise and beer.  Smart move on skipping the gym and taking your wife out for a walk - 2 hours on a nice day sounds like a good way to spend the day.

I'm not a huge fan of otter creek but based upon your recommendation - I will grab a sampler and give them another try.

Keep up the great work!

So glad to hear that the pain in your knee is easing...  Keep being smart by taking it nice and slow.  Enjoy the swim!

Off to the doctor's office again today for an x-ray this time.  She will decide if I need an MRI based on what she finds.  It's weird, kinda feels like it's just out of alignment or something since the pain is deep inside under the knee cap.  It feels like a good pop would fix it.  The nurse suggested maybe it's dislocated but who knows til she sees it in person.

Sounds painful.  I felt something similar last year, after an MRI the doctor said I had cracked some of the cartilage behind my knee and the pain I was feeling was my knee cap rubbing the cracked cartilage.  the solution was orthoscopic surgery to shave it down smooth.  Didn't get the surgery yet because I just stopped exercising but it was supposed to be 3 days off my feet and then back to normal in a month.

hope its something simple like that.  Good luck at the doc

Make sure that you are spending time doing some lower leg strength exercises. I think that is part of my problem. I would not be surprised if you had something pulling at your patella due to a muscle imbalance. I say that based on no examination of the patient. I would joke about ObamaCare or the Canadian health care system, but I digress.

I need to beef up my knees.  The left one is all tight and weak feeling from supporting my weight since I'm favoring the hurt one.  You think squats would help do that (once it's healed of course)? I noticed the push up program has a squat one also.

I have not done enough lower leg/hip strength training while ramping up my volume. I think my hip/glutes are weak and that is giving me knee pain. Weakness in one area tends to cause a problem in another. Everything is connected from the hip on down.

Didn't get a run in yesterday; my wife and I went and looked at a pair of houses instead. Disappointed, and our search continues.

First in the pool this morning, for 2000 yards. I also found a masters group that I may join once things settle with this house stuff. Hitting the trainer tonight too.

In other news, the Chicago marathon registration is snarled up, giving me another few days to waffle over registration.

Great work on the swim!

Did a brief b/r brick today with no knee pain. Made the mistake of not fueling for the bike that turned into a brick. It was pretty short so I didn't have to crawl back.

Pool day Cool . I do the shades because it's warm and sunny out, lol.  Figured I would remind all the folks freezing.  Did 700 yards total.  Managed to do a modified breast type stroke (have no idea what they are all called) and did a full 50 without stopping.  Monday starts the masters group.

Do they make a bracket that goes from one aero bar to the other.  Like a bar of sort to put a watch mount on it so you can actually see it? If I put it on the bar itself it would be sideways and would have a hard time reading it.  I have searched but have no idea what this would be called so ran into a dead end.  I could have sworn I saw one on dcrainmakers site mounted on his bike but no reference to it anywhere.

**Edit**  Found some.  Google is wonderful, if you don't find it just keep putting in crazy terms.  Found a Profile Design Universal Mount.  Kind of what I'm looking for.  That will have to work.

So after spending the last three days staying home taking care of a sick kid, I think I am sick.  My stomach is not very happy and I decided it was best to skip my session with the trainer this afternoon.  Yell  And here today was going to be 12 days in a row getting workouts in!

That's exciting Jared.  That'll be a great event.

I just got back from my run, and was able to shave almost 4:30 off of the elapsed time, and :30 seconds better per mile.  Getting back down there.
