Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Btw.....performance energy blends (powerbar) are fantastic. Tried the banana blueberry. Just an option if you need an 80 calorie boost pre-training. Kelly got me hooked on these. Oh, yes, ribs are good, too. I'm so hungry all the time that all I do is dream of food and plan the next feeding. |

Welcome to Ironman training.
It's a hard habit to break once the race is over. |

It does make sense and I will try to remind myself that I will be better rested for the actual race. This probably isn't the last time I freak out . It's always hard doing a new distance. So many unknowns.... Originally posted by jarvy01 I had my longest ride ever this past weekend as well. 75 miles. Kinda freaked me out a bit because I was absolutely spent by the end. The thought of doing 112 and then a marathon is intimidating. I hit full on freak out mode yesterday. Not good. Speedfil worked great. It's a keeper. Like Carrie, I've dialed in my nutrition and it's solid. I've also found a pre-race dinner and breakfast that work perfectly for me. Sushi the night before the race and rice, berries, banana, honey, and sports drink on race morning. Works like a charm On my long ride I ended up pulling in to a gas station to refill my bottle and didn't unclip my right foot in time. Scratched up my bike frame. A little road rash on my elbow, arm, and leg. It was more embarrassing than anything. A guy actually walked over to see if I was ok. This is the second fall in the last two weeks. I need to pull it together. Seriously. My body AND my brain are fried. I don't even want to look at this bike for at least 6 weeks after my IM. Swim and recovery ride today. I have to do some schedule juggling bc of holiday travel.
Here's the thing about being spent on long training rides, you have to take into account that you're training all week long and then you ride on the weekend. There is NO WAY you're going to feel like you can get off and run a marathon. Basically no matter how well rested you feel your gas needle is not on F. Going through a 2-3 week taper will ensure that you walk into the race on full. So all in all it's normal Jen. Don't freak out.
The unknown really is the b#$%h about a new distance isn't it? Once you're finished all the advice you were given over the past few months makes a ton more sense. |

It's soooo hard the first time and that goes for every new distance you try. Never quite as bad the second go around. It's all very scary to me right now. I hadn't really thought about the actual race too much up to this point. I was just trying to get all the training in. Now that we're getting close, the reality is hitting me and I'm obsessing over every little detail. I know I will be physically prepared. I just need to calm my thoughts and emotions. |

I have now made it through my first HIM training and I can't believe it wasn't as bad as I made it out to be. Sounds like you are in the same boat mentally! But come race day you are going to be so ready! |

Extreme Veteran 826 Bristow | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed I am back at! Tabata drills today. I had to do outside because the trainer is in VA. I went to get in the pool today and they closed it because of the thunderstorms/lightening. I was like it is indoors...why?! Safety protocol. Dumb!! I was so excited to swim today too Anyway, seems all is goo with everyone! All you long ride people congrats! Keep up the great work everyone! |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Can empathize with you Jen. Every race for me is a new distance and the thought of doing a half seems daunting at times. I no longer read any TT forums so as to not hear how far people are running and fast people are riding, crank sizes people are using, etc. I just came off a hard training block and am trying to shake a pull or something in my back that flairs up during swims. All this has made me a little irritable. |

All this has made me a little irritable. You're going to do well. You've put in some really solid training. HIM is the best distance (want to do 2 of those myself next season)!!! I can understand why the back pain is making you feel irritable. I have this groin/hip/quad thing I can't shake. Not severe enough to keep me on sidelines but bothersome enough to make me irritable. When is your race again? |

Yuck. 2300 in the pool this morning and 1:15 on the trainer later. My oldest two get shipped off to their grandparent's house in Miami in a week. YAY!!! Some quiet time. |

It's life with 4 kids. I hadn't anticipated how busy we'd be this summer. It's been a huge drain. I can't believe I've managed to get in all the training. I was on the bike at 4:45 this morning to get the 2 hour workout in before swim team practice. Then we have a meet tonight. Not sure I will be able to swing another IM until the kids are older so I'm trying to enjoy the process. We'll see how the next month goes. I believe trainer rides are just as good as roads for building fitness so it's all good! |

Drafting gives them a 30% energy savings, even taking that into account, they're still doing the work to go about 30 mph on their own. If you want to see super fast, you should watch some track cycling. |

Everyone is an individual and internet forums can bring out the worst of braggers. and the biggest BS'ers also you wanna see if someone is doing the work, look at race results, if you are that curious, compare race logs to actual results to see if they are honest or not, i have come across many many people who actually fudge their times on a race report versus the real thing. I then discount everything they say, i mean if u are gonna lie on a internet race log, what makes me think you are not full of BS always. |

Pro 4528 Norwalk, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed seems this running also helps biking a bit, i have been doing 1 mile a day for the better part of two weeks with a couple hiccups etc, it is summer and life is busy. I promised myself that if i missed a run or something i would not be hard on myself about it, it is early, nothing is key yet, and that was a big problem i had when training last year, i was very hard on myself and if i missed a workout, i took it out on those around me. It did not make for a pleasant living environment and hampered the good feeling of any success. So i rode in the heat of the day Saturday, i am not inclined to riding with anyone yet, but i noticed that from even the little bit of running i did, i am starting to get my legs on the bike back, i did a pretty easy 26 miles. I can definitely tell i have 25lbs extra i am carrying. My goal for the race nest year is 190lbs, i am currently 230. Hope everyone is doing well. I read, but will not comment much, i just don't want to get in the way of y our guys who have been going at it a while. |

Member 413 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Originally posted by ccmpsyd Did an OWS this morning with five other people and a kayaker. We were going to swim out to an island in the bay when the fog rolled in. Could hear the fog horn from the lighthouse off in the distance. It's Maine. It happens. Couldn't see a thing. Hit stop on the Garmin. Continued on parallel to the shore. Forgot to hit start on said Garmin. Figure we did 1.25 miles all totaled. Nice way to start a Sunday morning. Maine is spectacular! Yes, got a lot of that fog too. We stopped at a friend of my husband's near the Bowdoin campus. She lives on the water and said there was an island a mile away from her that I could swim to which would have been great, but it was too foggy . Other highlights: Moody's diner in Waldoboro. Everything in Acadia. Saw real beaver dam (I know I am sounding like a real city slicker now). Something that was everything I hoped it would be: running on those carriage trails in Acadia! (so blessed to be on a soft surface when you have forty plus old knees What a great place to train in the summer. I hope you are having fun with HIM training |
