Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Well Suzy, time to check in and let us know how you are feeling heading into IMWI? Taperitis? Bib number? Anyone else racing? I have an oly on Saturday at the Gulf. They also have a super sprint which I have done the last 2 years. It's only a 2 mile run and I know as I pass the turnaround on the run for the sprint I'll be kicking myself. The run is along the beach road, on black top with ZERO shade. But, I need one more team race to qualify for the tri team again next year and only the oly distance counts. On a more positive note, my team mate that usually wins my age group will be racing in Vegas this weekend so I have a better chance to make the podium in our AG. It will be hot at the Gulf but nothing like they are predicting for the Vegas 70.3 WC |

Member 2098 Simsbury, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED That really sucks about Tahoe I bet that's one of the most beautiful ims out there. I was there in the winter and I have a picture of the Lake that I took from the top of Scott Peak hanging in my office. aaaahhhhh Good luck this weekend peeps! I have my last sprint of the season on Sunday. I'm kind of bummed that my pool has been closed for 2 weeks so I haven't been able to swim at all. Oh well. I'm just going to have fun and go with it. I've started formulating my 2014 plan - which is almost as much fun as actually doing them LOL oh and happy new year to my Jewish friends (are there any here?) - so I'll be busy with family stuff tomorrow and then it's already FRIDAY! I've worked in a couple short runs this week; today I'm planning on a 45/30 bike/run brick, which will be my first time back on the bike. I'm feeling pretty good, all in all, although my legs feel a little heavy while running. Of course, that could have something to do with the ridiculous humidity we've had around here the past few days. That can go away anytime now! |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED No road bike. Might put a set of slicks on the cross bike and see if I can keep up with the roadies. My old tri bike is sitting in the basement, feeling lonely. I have a set of drop bars with brifters also in the basement. Might turn the old tri bike in to a road bike of sorts. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Good work you two. You survived the first event in an Ironman; being fast enough on the computer. I thought it might stay open for 24 hours or so. Good that the temptation is now removed. Glad that you are both doing another. All the lessons learned from training for and racing your first will serve you well on your second. My second IM (of two total so it isn't like I've done a dozen) was so much better. Mentally, physically, emotionally. Of course it wasn't Hawaii, but other than that it was better |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Originally posted by slornow Well Suzy, time to check in and let us know how you are feeling heading into IMWI? Taperitis? Bib number? No taper madness since I really only started that a few days ago. Having had the surprise surgery week off, we decided to keep me going a little longer than I'm used to. In some ways I like it. We'll see what purpose it serves on Sunday. Bib #931 and I have a tracking device that will be live after the swim. I did my last EARLY, EARLY morning swim on the course today. It was still dark so we watched the sun come up. Lake was beautiful and calm which was very good for me. I have one more swim there tomorrow afternoon and then will consider myself good to go on all fronts. I'm excited and a little nervous. I'm not a weather checker until Friday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If I have calm water, I can handle almost anything else (or so I think!). Goals are still the same, secure an IM PR which would be anything less than 13:21 with the ultimate goal of sub 13. If the weather totally blows and times are off, I'll be hoping for Top 15 in my AG. I don't look at my watch for elapsed time at all. My coach may give me some indication on the run if I am close to that sub 13 for some extra movitation, but we'll see. Running down the chute and seeing all the people and that clock is always a source of joy for me! That's it! |

New user 166 Fernley, NV | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Opinions needed please. My last race of the year has a 3x5mile loop draft legal bike course. I have not raced a draft legal event and was wondering what peoples ideas were about tri bike versus road bike. I know I won't be out of the water with the fast group and anticipate big bunches of people already on the bike course. Last year there were 450 people in the race. I am better fit on my tri bike and its much lighter than my roadie, but the thought of this many people on the course scares me I would hate to wreck my tri bike. thoughts? |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Here are my August Totals: Swim: 4h 33m - 13000 Yd Bike: 26h 09m 51s - 519.16 Mi Run: 14h 41m 38s - 97.35 M Having dropped IM WI I have slowed down a bit but am still maintaining a solid base. I had to make some tough choices this summer but feel I did the right thing to sacrifice this race. I worked extra this summer and am proud to say I paid for both my son's college tuition without having to borrow at all. I also spent last week moving my son into his dorm and all that goes into that. Now that I served my parenting duties I am free and clear to focus on IM AZ. I am working on increasing my run base this month. I have never been fast . My pool is closed until Sep 9th, so I will use the extra time to focus on run. Previously I mentioned moving to Arizona. Well I had a really nice job offer but that was when my youngest was planning on moving to Utah for college and Rugby. Now that Utah's Rugby Team is officially suspended, he is attending Davenport, a local college with an excellent Rugby Team. As a result, I am remaining in Michigan for the next few years to be near him and watch him play. Anyway, life has thrown some curves my way (fortunately, all good ones) and I've had to re-evaluate my priorities. Dropping an IM is always hard, but I have no regrets as I did it for the right reasons. I will be tracking Suzy and other friends at IM WI, (while being green with envy!). Life can be tough, but good to see that you're keeping the training up! I've found that training really helps when the rest of life doesn't seem to be going as planned. I can't control everything, but I can control whether I'm going to do my workout or not, at least most of the time. |

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Ok, I'd like some season planning advice. I've just signed up for IMChoo, and that is my A race, obviously. Between now and then, I'll also be doing IM Raleigh 70.3 in June. However, I'm trying to figure out how to close out my season. Here are my possible options: 10/26-HM OR FM 9/29-Sprinternational (1000m swim, 21 mile bike, 7k run) 10/13-Olympic or HIM 11/9-HM I'm not obligated to do any of those races, but those are the ones between now and December that I'd be interested in doing. I can do any combination of those races, or distances. Anyone have any thoughts or input? Also, apparently there were some real problems with IMChoo sign-up today. Active.com wasn't working all that well, there were a ton of people trying to sign up, and apparently a lot of spots were given away to clubs before proper registration was open, which is making a lot of ST people pretty unhappy. I'm surprised that both Nate and I got in. |

Food poisoning is the worst. I remember falling asleep with my face on the toilet seat the last round, I was so exhausted from puking. Gross! That's sad that she picked it up from a fancy pants restaurant. Bummer! Yay, Jamie and Nate! Congratulations for getting in. Good luck, racers! I hope to find a sitter so I can participate in a mountain bike race on Sunday. I did last Sunday and had a blast. It was the first time I felt strong in one of these races. There were 6 of us ladies doing the long course of 15 miles and I came in 2nd. Yay! Edited by Blanda 2013-09-04 6:07 PM |

Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Jamie...apparently you've made quite a name for yourself at IM Louisville. I rode with a fellow tri club member today, Keith Irwin, who also completed IMLouisville. He was talking about how rough the run was and mentioned "this incredible guy that looked like he had literally fallen flat on his face." He talked about the bloody nose, the scraped up face, the bandages around his head, but that he was still putting one foot in front of the other mile after mile after mile. He was simply amazed with his tenacity and both mental and physical strength. It's possible that he wasn't talking about you, but from the description of the injuries (and from the photo you posted), it could have very well been you. Your fortitude made an impression. Hats off to you again. |

That actually happened to me at breakfast the next morning; I was talking to a guy and he asked if I was the guy who was passed out on the run. I told him that I really didn't know since I was, you know, passed out. Thanks for pat on the back |

I would most definitely ride the road bike. It sounds like you aren't looking to strike out on your own, or even necessarily to take pulls at the front, and in that case, there is very little reason to be on a tri bike, even if your fit is better there. (I'm assuming it isn't *horrible* on the road bike -- and it would have to be pretty bad for fit to start to be a huge factor over 15 miles.) Weight makes almost zero difference unless you are doing serious serious climbing. Riding fast in a group, your best bet is to ride the roadie in the drops. You'll have the benefit of reasonable aero-dynamics, maneuverability, and the brakes right at your fingertips (which is very important riding in a group, especially a group of triathletes who probably do not ride in big groups all that often). Even riding the hoods on a road bike would be far superior to a tri bike, IMO, in this situation. |

This is the same event as my very first triathlon, so looking to see how much I've improved over the course of a year. Also my first step "back" to a sprint after completing my Olys earlier this year -- hoping that everything will seem much shorter Also have started the early stages of planning ahead for 2014 -- will likely try for a full marathon in the spring. Good luck to all the racers this weekend! Scott. |

Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED I've got an Olympic on Saturday. Rode the bike course last night...the first 12 miles is super fast, but the next 12 seemed like it was straight uphill the entire way! I pushed myself harder than I would usually ride mainly because I was riding with a group that was faster than me. Was good, but I know on Saturday I'll have to ride smarter and pace myself so I have something left in my legs to run 6 miles. |
