Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning BDASers! Good to "see" you back Kate! Rainy and chilly here today--ugh. I'm not happy about that. I have a bike ride scheduled for today and I was hoping to get it done outside. Once you've tasted the open road each spring, the trainer is awfully hard to deal with. Masters swim class this morning--2500m (#168/400). |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by kevinbe I'd been doing a lot of those 10+ milers at the 9:30+ pace thinking the speed would eventually come, and it wasn't. So I switched my program, and am now going to do speed work solely, and slowly build it into my distance running. I Have to run faster to be faster. Struggling with this myself as of late - trained over the winter for a HM in late March, and since then I've been back to a 5k/Sprint training plan and the speed is taking forever to come back. I'm pushing hard and only attaining a minute/mile slower than where I was in the Fall before starting up HM training... |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just wanted to catch up for a min on my workouts. I haven't been logging them at all, haven't even downloaded most off the watch to Polar... I am in full Sprint Tri training mode now. I actually don't have a rest day on the calendar, the closest is hot yoga on Mondays. I have doubles Tuesday and Thursday, and bricks Sunday. Yesterday was a double, and I absolutely needed Dave's motivational youtube clip (linked in my sig) to get through. So tired, didn't want to run after work never mind swim after dinner. Got the 4 mile run in, was definitely running fatigued as I started to have some pains at the end. The kind that make you need to stop. Had to just get home, stretch it out, and hope the pool would be kind. I was able to use the bluetooth audio in the car to get the 'ultimate motivational clip' over the stereo. Damn. Let me just tell you, chills all the way to the Y. I might have been slow in the pool, but I did the full mile of my workout and didn't skip a 50. No 'cheating' with pull bouys or breast strokes - lol. For me that's pretty big, I had to cheat a lot last summer just to survive workouts. All of this makes me realize something. We are BaDAsS! This level of working out is pretty hectic for the average person. The average person with a family and a full time job. And this is to be an Age Group MOP at the Sprint Distance. I'm not 'anyone' in the world of Tri. I'm not going to be on a podium ever, or even top 3 in my AG. I don't have a rival I'm competing against. I'm not sponsored. I'm only doing this for me. There are other ways to get in shape, other ways I could do fewer workouts a week with. There are other ways to get the competition bug fix, you can do a road race at any distance on any weekend nearly year round. There are easier ways to get bragging rights to friends and family. They really don't understand why we would do this, or how difficult it really is. I don't know about you guys, I just do this for me. This is fun for me. The workout variety, the number of ways to compete against myself for improvements, the improvements I see in myself. "10,000 streams fan out before you like a river delta, each one promising the path of least resistance. Thing is, you're headed upstream." |

I've been thinking a lot about this lately, mostly due to some negative comments I've received from my mother-in-law (a woman who gets out of breath walking across the kitchen) about how much time I spend working out. I absolutely agree with you. No matter what distance, no matter where they finish (or if they finish at all), no matter what the time, Triathletes are Badass. There is a dedication required that not many people have. Not just to the three sports, but to the mental aspect of competing against yourself. We are our own worst enemies in many cases. This sport takes both physical abilities AND mental toughness, the later being the more important element, by far. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thursday is mostly rest day! Yoga and a little strength training for me this morning after "sleeping in" to the glorious hour of 5:30am. Any one racing this weekend? Is it the Season Opener in MA? I'm off to the in-laws house for Mother's Day. Planning a nice long run on Saturday morning. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dave really got me thinking about it. During our run this weekend we were chatting (a good sign for me - conversation during a run! Meaning I'm not pushing myself hard enought to be out of breath - lol). And he was talking about how no one outside gets the Ironman. They want to know how long it is, and they think it's crazy (it is). But the race is the icing on the cake, it is literally a drop in the bucket compared to training for an Ironman. At the sprint and oly distances we're not putting in those kind of hours of course. The principle is the same though - race day for a sprint is what an hour and a half, two hours? How many hours of training - on season and off - went into those two hours? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi all! A quick note (it's after midnight here). 3400 yd swim 35 minutes on the bike (had to cut short - school function - but I did some speed work) did sprints and ran an easy mile at Mini Milers tonight with the kids then off to the ballpark to help with baseball. My youngest turned 9 yesterday and tonight was his first night pitching ever!! He didn't even know he was going to go in, has never had any coaching outside of me hollering to him from homeplate as I caught for him a few times. He loved it...it wasn't pretty but he loved it and he can throw HARD. hahaha. Just have to get him some practice to reign it in. Hey MA people - I head to MA tomorrow for a wedding in Brewster on Saturday. How is traffic on the Cape this early in the season? Also, have you biked out there and how is it? Crazy drivers?? I'm going to bring my bike and try to get one in on Saturday morning (fog pending...maybe I'll throw the trainer in the car too). Edited by aviatrix802 2016-05-05 11:33 PM |

Getting workouts in and going to school functions, baseball games, having the time to play catcher, and working a full time job. BaDAsS! The Cape - not usually bad until Memorial Day. People get wise to that and head down in May when the weather is ok but not so many of them as over the summer. You will probably hit a little traffic getting over the bridge (either one, they both end on a rotary!) but shouldn't be too bad otherwise. Cycling - just stay off Rt. 6 - lol. Seriously there are rail trails, we joke all summer long because on the highways around here we know it's 'Cape' season by the number of large SUVs from New York and New Jersey (don't they have their own beaches?) loaded up with bicycles. The bike/walking paths along the canal are awesome - really wide - but I believe Brewster is far enough from there to make it not do-able. HAve fun at the wedding! |

That is the one thing triathlon has done for me. Road biking. Every road is an adventure! Have fun! Originally posted by aviatrix802 Hi all! Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Big confidence boosting day here. Started with an hour straight swim at masters practice. Even though I was going slow and steady, certainly not race pace, I confirmed I can swim the 1.2 within the cutoff time. Then, came home and was headed out for a long bike ride. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I noticed a slice through my front tire as I was checking my bike. Ugh...no spare at the house and no time to run to the LBS and get a new one because we are heading out of town this weekend and I'm tight on time anyway. So, I quickly took the tire off and put a dollar bill over the slice, then dropped that bad boy on the trainer and suffered for the next 3:45. Thank goodness for Netflix!!! Finished off the training day with a quick 15 min brick run. Now, all I have to do is sit in the car for four hours. Good luck to those racing this weekend!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Big training week this week. Tue and Thursday I went all out on my runs. my first two miles on both runs were 7:15, and 7:45 for Tuesday, and 7:07, and 7:35 for Thursday. This is fast by my standard. I finished those runs off with a 7:44/mi pace, and a 7:59/mi pace. Today's long run was 8.25 miles at a 8:44/mi pace. overall 112:08 time is the 9th fastest run on this route out of 20 some runs. That puts me mop in my own training against myself. This also means that the 118:xx I did this run in February was slow, and the 112 today was somewhat fast. I'm happy with this. My wife is in a Health and Wellness program at the Community college. Her program had a fitness fair where they helped people set goals, talk about exercises that could help meet those goals and had a nutrition table to help people make adjustments to their eating habits for a better overall fitness level. I went and was able to create a good short and long term goal Here goes. Once I write it here, it's set in stone. 6 week goal is a 51minute 10K 6 month goal is a 3:50 finish at Spokane Marathon in October 1 year goal is a 50K finish next April of 8:30-9:00/mi pace |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Belated Mother's Day to our moms out there!! I spent the weekend at my in-laws house. Managed to get in my long run on Saturday morning before it started storming. It was one of those runs that made you wonder why you got out of bed. I was scheduled for 8, but only managed 5 because I really had to go to the bathroom. I also wore a brand new pair of running shorts (bad, bad idea). Turns out they were too big and ended up rolling up my legs. Wasn't prepared for that, so I just ended up calling it after my pit stop. Went to the running store in their town and bought myself a new pair of shoes (Hoka one one). I've finally decided to give up on Brooks Dyad 8, which I have been wearing since they came out. I loved the Dyad 7, but these new ones don't work for me. The pair I currently have are going back. I've worn them for five runs total and the insoles are shredding. This is the second pair that have done this. This morning was masters swim again. 30x100---WTF?!?! It was tough. My coach videoed me swimming today too. I didn't know he was doing that until after the fact. Very interesting. Lots to work on, but progress has been made since my first day at masters. One hour run scheduled for after work today. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well a good weekend of fitness. Managed a couple of runs and a bike! Went with my wife to a sporting goods store last night and somehow ended up buying some Merrell Mix Master 2 Trail running shoes...not a planned purchase but they were half price so I had to get them right?? Went for a swim this morning. My May total is more than the past 2 months...Need a consistent month of swimming, biking and running! |

Makes me feel good to be a sissy this race, although I have no idea what I've gotten myself into for run-transition-bike-transition-run again. My strategy is 'don't run the first leg too fast. Then don't try and bike too fast. Then hope for the best in the 5k.' I have always wanted to do the Du though, since I struggled so hard with the swim for so long (still do, really) - it's an attractive option. |
