So I tried to keep up with the big dogs yesterday...  Was in a good group and we were rolling pretty well at about 18mph maybe a little more at times and I felt comfortable.  There was a pack in front of us going 20+ when the owner of the local trek store and a cuople of guys on his team came up to us and asked to try to catch them, I tried to hang but couldn't so I ended up missing a turn for the route and went on a 20 km detour before I figured it out.  Still was able to do 61 miles in 3:22 and could still walk after so it's a plus.  I think I do need to upgrade my saddle from the stock one I have now any suggestions?  Also my toes were feeling kind of numb most of the last half of the ride is that cleat placement, speedplays, or something else?

Way to kick it into overdrive Allen have fun!

Great job!  I'll leave it to Yanti (and others) to discuss possible reasons for you toe numbness, because really I have no idea , but regarding saddles, I have the Cobb V Plus (ithink) on my road bike and the Adamo Prologue on my tri bike.  I like them both.

figured i would aim for 6 tommorrow then a Tuesday 7, back to a 5 on Friday. An 8k on Sunday then a 6 tuesday, 4 on Thursday and no more running til race day but will sprinkle in some riding and swimming in between these to keep all the disciplines going. Does this sound sensible?

OMGWTFBBQ ... that means our races are in TWO WEEKS! panicpanicpanicpanicpanicpanicpanic ...

Actually, that is not a horrible plan. Run MUCH SLOWER than you think you should / need to / etc. If you're going to make a big leap in volume (while at the same time making leaps in longest distance), dial way back on the intensity.

I can't run much slower without walking. Can i please try a quick(er) one tommorrow just to see what i can do? After that i will try to dial it down to concentrate on upping the distance.

I get the OMG and WTF but i wouldnt want a BBQ in this weather, it's too cold outside. And you should know that as a former Royal Naval Officer i never panic, although i could make an exception

Good grief, man. I can run a 17-minute mile or walk a 14-minute one. My dedication to lassitude knows no bounds ... take notes on the possibilities there ... hey, wait a minute, didn't you yourself just say somewhere you must not make everything a PR?

Heh. Do what you like tomorrow. Sometimes you gotta just chase the dream literally. Fair warning, though.

The only times I've ever truly panicked are from psychosis. Those don't count because they weren't real

I was good and ran 6k at a 11.41/mile pace which was nice and steady. Felt like i could have carried on for a good while longer and no injuries so happy.

Will bump it up in distance again for next run. It's so exciting. 14 13 days 21 hours 50 mins and counting. Must keep calm. Must keep calm. Must keep calm.

Well done!

Saddle + shorts is a very personal choice.  I like Desoto 400 mile shorts + Cobb saddle.  (and yes, I know guys who also like this combo).  YMMV.

What was the temperature?  If it was cool out, you may need toe covers.  On Saturday morning in Raleigh, I had on smartwool socks and toe covers.  I don't know if your temperatures were similar in Charleston.  And what Yanti said, have you had a bike fitting?

Errr yessss, must keep calm. Also, listen to Yanti...don't push it! Listen, we don't run marathons in preparation for a marathon. We train and built up to the marathon. The test of "can we do it or not" is the race. This goes for all other distances.

Please be careful!

Yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip!

Are you using good quality bike shorts and slatherfuls of lube everywhere?

What is it exactly about your saddle and nethers (please go into way-excruciating TMI detail here) that makes you think you need a different saddle?

Have you had a professional bike fitting done lately?

Numb toes could be truly nearly anything, from nerve impingement from a position that puts undue strain on your lower back, to the same but on one or more of the perineal nerves (perineum = taint), to body/knee position relative to your feet, to yes, platform/pedals/cleat placement, footbed, shoe ...

All of your toes, or just a few? On all sides/under/over/down to which joint? Tingling then numbness, or just numbness, or both, and is it partial or complete numbness (for example you can feel your fingernail scraping over the skin, but not very well = partial)? How long did it take for normal feeling to come back?

Yes good quality of bike shorts, I don't use a lot/any lube but chafing isn't really the issue, had a bike fitting done about a month ago.  The issues I was having was not being able to get a good sit point on the saddle, felt like I was sitting on soft tissue not the seat bones and that became soreness the next day in my butt muscles near my taint and was requiring me to use some time out of saddle to keep going during the ride.

The numbness started as tingling first, both feet and was slighlty relieved by loosening my shoes a bit but didn't go away.  The weather was upper 40's to mid 50's sunny and 10-20 mph wind.  When I finished I had numbness in both of my big toes and the toe next to it on my right foot

It looks like this was by far your longest ride in the past month -- correct?  Did you have your bike fitting before or after your 40 miler on February 23?  Did you have any problems with either your saddle or numbness on February 23rd?

Some numbness the ride was after the fitting I don't remember having the same amount or type of soreness afterwards.

I'd contact the fitting place, tell them about the numbness and ask them to schedule an adjustment.  The soreness could very well be that this was 45+ minutes longer than your previous long ride and and a higher effort to boot.  I'd mention the soreness but I think that adjusting for the numbness + fitness + possible new saddle will address that.

If you are getting a new saddle and revisiting your fit, maybe get the new saddle before the refit?

Note:  They should not charge you for the refit.  You should not have numbness!

Fit is good for three months and I agree I'm doing alot longer rides than I was last year so it would make sense for issues to pop up now and will get the fit updated

Agreed. The bike shop should also have loaner saddles or a generous return policy so that you can try different saddles out to get one that really suits you.

They'll probably be able to recommend saddles based on your problems, riding style, and anatomy, but if you keep feeling like you're sitting on soft tissue instead of your sitz bones, a split saddle (if properly positioned and you're positioned sitting on it properly) will pretty much force you to be on your sitz bones since there's only empty space elsewheres!

P.S. Ahem. Junk off the front. That is all.

So how freaked are you right now Yanti?  I hope you both have an awesome race!

I was wondering why so quiet as well, must be peak week for everyone else...

Lifted yesterday, swim today, the YMCA kids have gone back to their own pool although you wouldn't catch me outside in an unheated pool just yet, so I have my pool back!

Anyone racing this weekend?  I had hoped to do a St. Patty's day race but a job opportunity presented itself.

I have lost something...Has anyone seen my motivation??? I am still doing my workouts (mostly), but it just doesn't feel 'right' to me--I WANT to work out, I WANT to study for my classes and pay attention, but my WANTING to sit down and simply do nothing seems like a so much better idea...>sigh< I really don't know what my issue is...sadly, it seems that any moment I plan to have to myself eventually gets some 'thing' planned to have to be done. ug.

Okay, whine session over, I needed to get that off my chest....is anyone else feeling this way???

I acted the fool today and kept running when I should have stopped.  I was doing a 5k for time when at about 1 mile my left glute/high hamstring started hurting.  I ignored it and by mile 2 my form was bad and my pace was down.  At 2.6 miles I had to stop.  I am now limping like the idiot I am.  Thankfully, I have 2 weeks before my next race.

Welcome back, Carla!

Yep, Kate--I feel that way sporadically--everyone does. Part of life, part of being human ... nobody can be on all the time. My experience has been that if you do keep on doing the workouts and going to classes etc. anyway, the mojo does come back. It always does.

LYNN-LYNN IS THE BEST CO-MENTOR IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!!!!!!

Surely you agree

Today my long-awaited wetsuit arrived, shipped to Indonesia by our darling beloved Lynn herself! It's a beauty! It's an Orca Equip, in the mid-range line, and I have never had such a fine suit! I am not kidding when I say the thing damn nearly swims itself. It's truly incredible.

Crappy photos, but better ones (not with a bad camera and not when putting a wetsuit on in sweltering tropical heat) are to come!

As she posted, she's working through some health issues right now, so make sure you stop by her logs and leave some cheer:

Compression tights....and ice.  For next $$ spree, I'd HIGHLY recommend 110% compression gear...they are mega $ but oh so awesome...they feel wonderful and the plus..you can slide ice packs in them. I lived in the calf sleeves this week after a run on tuesday...wore them all day at work w,t,f....didn't sleep in them.  I *think* they help..which is all that matters right?!?

Be good to yourself!

Ice, ice, baby ... and give it a rest ... I'm pretty sure you're feeling better already and in any case, there's nothing new under the sun in 2 weeks, so rest it as long as you need to ...

I love my compression tights too!  I didn't even think of them after the injury though - i guess because it is in the mid 80*s and it never occurs to me to put long tights on in the heat or after such a short run!  Today is my normal long run day and I was a good girl and didn't run, so I am trying to be good to myself.  It's killing me though
