sorry not much involved in these threads lately, but I do read them all and have been picking up some food for thought. Good news is that I have graduated from PT and have hopefully isolated the calf pain to a disc pain. exercise and stretching the back and SI seen to be making better progress than anything else I have tried. Now to put it to the test as I start really gearing up my training.

I have been making some progress in swimming and last Thursday I was the only one at the masters class and he kicked my butt. I will post vidoe if he ever puts it up on the web

I love when we get sidetracked

Got in a swim this afternoon, 1500 yds. Still working on some stroke mechanics.

I might go get a VO2 Max test done. If you were to do one or the other, would you choose run or bike? I have a direction I'm leaning, but would like to hear from the masses.

Also will be doing a gait analysis shortly.

V02 max is meaningless. Don't waste your time/money. Your better off using that time training. V02 max is basiclly a genetic marker of potential. Gait analysis is only slightly more useful. Sorry.... With money I saved you go get a garmim 910

This doesn't help set up your HR zones? That's what I want it for. If I'm off base I don't want to do it.

Save your money. Kelly will give you a protocol to set you heart rate zones. V02 max is a test of your ability to process oxygen/ carbon dioxide. Is it useful? Yes, but not tremendously. Here is an article http://www.runningforfitness.org/faq/vo2-max.

Just do that freaking painful field test for HR zones. 10 min. warmup, then run hard for 30 minutes, hit lap after 10 minutes. Use last 20 min. HR average to set zones. I dud that and another variation Kelly gave me, and they were about the same result. Just zone calculation was a bit different.

You can set up HR zones with a trainer and run test, you don't need to pay for a VO2 max test.  What zones are you looking to use (e.g. what plan are looking for zones for -- Different plans calls zones different names but they're all based off the same testing data).

For me trainer speeds are always slower than real speeds outside.

that should be true for everyone if their trainer is set up properly

I agree.  Would you mind giving the "how to make sure you trainer is set up correctly" talk?

Yes please do, because I don't agree.  If I do a hard interval workout (Sufferfest or Spinerval), yes, average pace is slower.  But steady effort rides (and staying in a certain HR zone) my average pace is faster.  Now I live in a very hilly area, but it sounds like most of us do.  I don't think indoor is necessarily slower, it depends on the type of workout.

ETA - I think I'm a slacker outside though, so maybe that's part of it.

And yes, you should inflate your tires every time, as well as set the tension the same every time.

you have to compare apple to apples, not apples to grapefruit.

with intervals or sufferfest, you are working and resting, average MPH is totally useless. In your steady state ride you are staying in a certain HR zone, you will see benefit from training when you are going faster at the same HR. You would need to compare the same workout outside to the inside version, then compare speeds at the same power or HR, those workout are almost impossible to duplicate outside. on a trainer you do not use all the muscles you do on an outside ride, rollers would be more similar to an outside ride than the trainer.  people are typically 1-2 mph faster outside than on a properly setup trainer inside at race pace or threshold pace. If you cupcake your rides (and i am not insinuating that) of course you could be faster inside, but that is a false positive.  Realistically, the trainer is designed to make you stronger to translate to better performance outside, MPH is actually a very inaccurate device to measure regardless, there are too many variables.

Nicely put.  I make progress on the bike over the winter, when I'm on the trainer 10 hours/week.

abqtj - 2012-02-16 10:23 PM I can't for the life of me get my trainer set the same each time. Rode tonight on it and the tension just isn't right. It's a Cycleops Fluid trainer.

I have a Cyclops Fluid also.  My knob that you turn has grooves in it.  Once I had figured out how much tension to add (wheel not slipping, but not so tight I couldn't pedal) I turned it exactly 2 full turns off after my ride.  Before every ride I inflate the tires to the same pressure, then turn the know 2 full turns (using the grooves to deteremine 2 turns).  I also do not remove my bike, (road bike), it stays permanently attached to the trainer, so it should be the same set up every time.

I think I'm going to get another trainer so my husband and I can both do workouts.  I've been reading up on them, and of course the two I see rated the best are KK & Cyclops.  I think I might get another Cyclops, the newer ones have a slightly different tension knob.  It sounds like it's easier to make sure it's the same every time.  The downside I've read about it, is that it is not as stable because of the quick lock bike mount lever.  So I'm a little hesitant.  Anyone have the new Cyclops Fluid with this quick lock?

So the instructions that say something like 2-2.5 full turns once you make contact with the tire seems about right for you? I'll have to try that again, seemed really difficult to turn the wheel when I tried that as I recall.

I don't think it's 2 full turns from when it makes contact, probably more like 1.5.  It's 2 full turns off from what felt like a good tension, then 2 full turns on for next ride.  And so on.  Just figure out where you like the tension, then turn the same amount off / on every time.  Then you're setting it up the same every time.  It is kind of a pain to figure out the initial setting, but once done this method seems to work for me, and feels consistent from ride to ride.

So Cindy finally had her first real 5k this morning, meaning she tried to run the whole way.  34:xx.  Not too shabby.  I was expecting closer to 40 the way she talks about running.

Oh and watching a race go on while not competing was pure torture for me.

Kinda.  She's already registerd for the Warrior Dash in March.  I think she wants to be at the point that if her friends are doing a race she can jump in and not emabarass herself.

Did anyone see this good news?? Eating a hershey kiss before a race will make me faster!!LOL

Hurray for chocolate!
University of California researchers discovered that mice ran 50% more and were speedier than the control mice when given epicatechin ( a purified form of chocolate's flavonoid). Easy though, equivalent amount for humans is the size of a Hershey Kiss.

2500 in the pool and 5.5 on the dreadmill this morning.

Contemplating not actively trying to lose anymore weight.  I figure as my cardio goes up and my weight lifting goes down in about a month that the rest will come off on it's own.  Just thinking out loud here really.

Oh and I forgot.  Had a discussion with Cindy about how much time I spend outside the house training so it appears that I'll be spending more time on the trainer and treadmill than I have been.  Not overjoyed by this but I get it.  Also the plan was to start trying to have a third kid this summer.  She doesn't see my goal of IMTX 2013 and this as compatible, so it appears that IMTX is back on the table.  Guess I should be thankful that she's voiced the concerns prior to paying for the event unlike my other friends' wives who are all of a sudden giving them hell about their training.  Of course I was honest about the amount of time it would take and they may have fudged a little.

I think it's good that she was honest about her feelings.  Going from 2 to 3 children is a HUGE adjustment.  It didn't help that my third had severe reflux, food sensitivities, and had to wear a helmet for the first 10 mos. of his life.  Anyway, 3 or more children is a completely different ballgame.  Your wife will need you to be around.  It's great that we have the treadmill/trainer options.  Maybe another 70.3 is more doable given your plan to increase the size of your family.  Could you do Ironman this summer?

I think it's a good thing too.  I told her that family goals and plans come long before my goals in triathlon.  So I'll get over my disappointment.  I see a lot of HIMs in my future.  Which is cool, it will just take me a little bit to get my head wrapped around it.

2100 meter swim and 7 mile run at the gym this morning.  My husband is off today, so I'm lucky I had the option to get everything done this a.m.  We've been working like dogs trying to get this house ready to sell.  I am really, really tired.  Anyone have any words of wisdom about house showings?  I feel like the thought of it all is really stressful with the 4 kids and training.

I'm the opposite of Scott.....thinking I need to start logging food because my weight is trending upwards.  Not that it matters that much, but I feel like I'm eating a lot more than I need to eat, so I probably ought to be a bit more strict at this point.
