Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() David- On first glance at the weekly goals I thought your first goal was "Baby Got Back!" ....ohhh good old Sir Mixalot!... haha
Well I am feeling almost 100 percent healthy again, back is still a little tender some mornings but I am going to start a morning routine along with my push-up challenge to try to strengthen my core, and get rid of my back issues for good. I was thinking of doing the p90x ABRIPPERX program on the off days from the pushups. I remember a few years back when I was alternating pushups and situps every day as well I was playing nets in the pickup hockey league, I was like a leaky sieve but they were short a goalie and it was an awesome workout (lots of up and down!) I had never felt as strong through my core and that just transferred into all aspects of living...I need to get back to that place. I am still shooting for sub 200 by June 18th, but it is going to take some real will power from me. I weighed in yesterday at 230 bang on! I think that has to do with my flu more than anything, and I have probably got a bunch of pounds back through fluids, but hey, one step back two forward...got to focus on the small steps to the end goal! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bobddsmd - 2013-02-24 2:05 PM Justin, Bob, Nice work on the bike. Bob, that knee will be a long slow process to recover, but you'll go quicker resting it more and staying off it. Less is more. Just listen to your body and adjust your expectations to what you "should" be doing to what you "can" do safely w/out agravating more. Swim and bike more, run less. When you do run, do it in a controlled situation where you can control the pace (easy pace) and distance. Stay close to home so you can pull the plug if it's bothering you. Usually with a nagging thing, I can run through it and it goes away after a couple of miles, but with a serious chronic injury like that, you don't want to re agravate it over and over, because it'll never get better. Less is more. Cynthia- Yeah, I read that wrong. I was like, Holy crud, that girl's going through some stuff! I drew the shortest straw this weekend and had to help my old man out of a bad spot. He had till the end of the month to get out of his rental, so I spent this weekend moving him and lots of junk off of the property he was on. Good times. Missed my long run because of it. I'm going to make up a few extra miles this week on my shorter runs, and hit the 16 miler this next weekend. I'm glad I put a few extra weeks into this marathon plan for padding. I've used them all up at this point. Working on the Rotater IPA from Widmere. Prost Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I put the cart before the horse. I had really good success with p90x last year. I was having some hip challenges from early sprint tris and it made it go away. I listen to Endurance Planet podcast and I had asked the running coaches about my issue. They did not like the run more shorter runs and agree with what you are saying about not running. They even went to the point of saying they would rather me show up for my April race less fit but not injured instead of injured and fit. The challenge is that I am likely hurting things somewhat on the bike as well, just feeling it on the run. I actually really miss my long runs. That is a crazy thing for a guy who did not like running at all a while back. Obviously this in the time to be smart, get stronger and heal. I am optimistic as well regarding my chiropractic therapy. I hear your emotion. 2x last year, I was injured. I had the beginnings of plantar facia in left heal 1/2 way through marathon plan. I took 14 or so days off while I iced and stretched and took Ibuprofen. at 7 or 8 days, it killed me not to run, but when I tried, it wasn't better. taking the time off saved my marathon, and I was able to make it to the line and chase my goal. Had I have continued to run at a lesser rate, I'd have only prolonged the inevitable. Then the day after my HIM in August, I had a terrible pain in the back of the knee from overextending on my bike during the race. Again, I took at least 6 weeks on this one, and when I started running again in October, I could still feel pain behind the knee, but the time off had allowed me to get back into it. Take some time off from running. 5 days, 2 weeks, as long as it takes. start back slowly to test it out. If it feels better, go from there. build slowly, and it will pay you back exponentially from there. you have the base. You'll get back in the saddle quicker and healthier. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yakhead - 2013-02-24 6:21 PM Hey everyone This week has been a disaster, except for one good run, I want the do over too. Our house has had the flu, I have worked a crazy amount of hours, and had a bunch of family, no push ups. Well enough of the excuses for me, I have to get back on track starting tomorrow!!!! Eating strict Paleo again to hit 230, starting over on the pushup challenge, and doing a make up run tomorrow. Hope everyone gets better or is better. Ian Sorry that you had such a rough week last week. We seem to be experiencing the same Karma... A bunch of us have mentioned in recent posts that we want to have a "do over" (a sentiment that I can certainly understand and which I sometimes share) but I'd like for us all to be aware of the challenges we are all facing and be willing to cut ourselves some slack because of those challenges. Some of us have been injured or sick and it's hard to train when we aren't feeling 100%. Plus, as parents we all face our own challenges which can make getting those workouts in difficult. And finally - there are the other parts of our lives that we can't control - like work - that can make life $uck. So maybe instead of asking for a do over, we should all give ourselves the credit we deserve for the changes we have made in the past despite those challenges and press on towards our goals. The fact that we are rededicating ourselves to improve our fitness is something we should be proud of! Onward! |

Justin - I love the thoughts in your reward and penalty section. As a dad - you know the power of love. It's such a strong motivator. Thinking of your daughter and doing it for both of you will help you achieve your goals this week. So to will the threat of not being able to by any beer! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Alex - sorry to hear about the knee. So frustrating. I love the advice that Kevin gave you in his post - to take it slow and easy... One of the things that really helped me last year when I was injured (and I was injured A LOT!) was to aqua-jog. It burned the calories and gave me a pretty decent workout. You might want to try it out. Do it for 15 minutes one day and see what happens. If it hurts your knee, then spend more time on the swim and bike. But if you don't experience pain, try doing it for longer the next time (at some points last year, I was doing 90 minutes of aqua jogging 2x per week). Good luck! |

![]() | ![]() BigDH - 2013-02-22 11:01 PM Sorry I haven't checked in. I had a good 50k race on the weekend. Fun time. I debated posting this, so I decided not to, but if you are interested I go into detail in my log. I went through a tame, but traumatic thing last night. So I am dealing with the fallout and probably won't be checking in until it is dealt with. I don't mean to be cryptic but I just didn't want to disappear for a couple weeks. Sorry to hear that you have some hardships going on. I hope everything turns out ok |

![]() | ![]() Hey all, Had a pretty good week of solid exercise. Rested on Wednesday and then ran 3.5mi on thursday and got up Friday morning for deep stretching, a nice 1.5mi run and then 1000yds in the pool before work. It was my wife's birthday on friday so I let go of watching my food and just ate. I did pretty good at not stuffing my face but that kind ouf went out the window on saturday. Saturday I helped my mom move so I definitely got a great workout, but afterward I ate a terrible lunch and continued with a terrible dinner. I did manage to get 3 hrs of racquetball in on Sunday, which makes me feel a little better about my terrible eating. This weeks focus is going to be getting to the gym regularly and maintaining a somewhat healthy diet. |

From all I am reading it sounds like patellar tendonitis. The pain is in the exact spot they say and hurts just like the same. I hope I caught it early since some people took 6+ months to heal. It is now only hurting at night, more of an aching nag, and not all the time. I see the general doctor on Wed and then the ortho the following week on the 6th. Guess I am learning from my mistakes that I'm not 16 anymore. Just have finger crossed I'm only out a few more weeks. Still trucking away in the water though. Thanks for asking. |

Glad to hear that you've finally figured out what is ailing you. Who needs a doctor anyway when you can figure it out on your own... Now if you could just figure out how I can fix my back - I'd be willing to send you the co-pay When you meet with the docs - see if you can push for some PT... It may cost you some cash but it might be worth it because you will have a chance to learn some exercises and stretches that will help you avoid injury in the future. Then when you meet with the PT - let him/her know that you are a triathlete and that you like some stretches that fit the demands of our sport. Don't forget the sun screen!
